Chapter 23

Abhimanyu Birla was truly, deeply and madly in love with his wife. As simple as that. He simply could not get enough of her. He was obsessed with her. His day begin and ended with her. His first thought when he opened his eyes were about her and the last thing he had in his mind as he fall asleep was also her. Even his dreams were about her. At first everyone said how once the honeymoon period ends, his feelings will calm down too but they been married for over a year now and he was more in love with Akshara at any given moment than he ever was before.


Abhimanyu’s day usually started pretty early. He would get up at 5 am and every morning he struggled to get out of bed. Not because he was not a morning person, he had no problem with early mornings. It was because of his beautiful wife sleeping next to him…to leave her and get up? He loved nothing more than feeling her warmth and hearing the sound of her softly breathing next to him. It proved almost impossible to get away from that. But Akshu always said “work is work, Doctor Saab”, he had no choice but to leave her and get ready for work.

At the hospital, he would look at the clock on the wall like a hawk waiting for 9 am because that’s when Akshu would come in to start her work day. She always stopped by to greet him. His day officially started once he saw Akshu’s smile and got a kiss from her. Whenever he got time between his meetings and appointments, he would go find her. Even if it was just seeing her work from a distance was enough for him….and they would always also have lunch together like they always have done. Abhi treasured their lunch time because he got to sit in front of her and stare at her to his heart’s content. Well not really, his heart was never going to get enough of her. Sometimes they will even drive to a different spot to have lunch.

Akshu will go home at 4 and once again, Abhimanyu will sulk around until it will be time for him to go home at 6. It was a wonder to him he ever got any work done seeing all he did all day long was think about Akshu. About how soft her skin was. About how her hair always had a floral smell. About how when she smiled, her big eyes will disappear. About the mole on her neck. That mole…he knew he had to get out of his thoughts once he started to think of that mole.

Once he got home, he always found his Akshu busy with something or another. Either she was cooking in the kitchen with his maa….more like making a mess in the kitchen, doing crossword puzzles with Anand, helping Nishta with her homework, discussing something with Mahima or Shifali or Parth or planning something with Neil. Sometimes he even found her laughing away with his dad. That always amused him as his father did not have a sense of humor but with Akshu, they always found something funny to laugh about.

He almost disliked his family then because he wanted Akshu to himself only and not share her with so many people. He would sulk around until at 9 pm it was time for him to go to bed. He would make an excuse about getting up early and taking Akshu with him.

In their room, he always got his wife’s undivided attention. It seemed like for Akshu who before barely said anything now never ran out of things to discuss. He didn’t mind. He could happily listen to her voice all day long. He would have his arms around her while she would lay her head on his chest and talk about her day while he would stroke her hair and plant kisses on her head. Sooner or later, Akshu will look up to him with those big eyes of her and smile and Abhi’s patience will run out and he will do everything he dreamt of doing all day long.

Abhi’s eyes opened and he tried to look at the time. 5:25 am. Damn it! Is the alarm clock not working? Next to him, Akshu stirred in her sleep. He turned to look at her and smiled. As always, a strand of her hair was covering her face. He gently moved it to behind her hair and kissed her forehead. He tried to get out of bed without disturbing her sleep but as soon as he got up, he heard her.

“Abhi?” She said softly still half asleep.

“Go back to sleep, Jaan. I have to go to work. I’ll see you at the hospital at 9, okay?” He said as he sat on the edge on the bed and placed a head on her bed.

“Abhi, please tell Tayi-ji that I can’t come today. I don’t feel good.” She said not opening her eyes. She was complaining of a headache the night before, Abhi remembered.

“Kya hua meri jaan? Come on, let’s go to the hospital right now.” Abhi said getting worried. It wasn’t like Akshu to miss work even if she wasn’t feeling well.

“Abhiiii…no!” Akshu said finally opening her eyes. She pulled his arm and motioned him to get back to bed. He slipped in next to her and she put her head on his chest. “Tum aaj hospital mat jao, please.”

Abhimanyu was now getting very worried. There were many times when Abhi wanted to stay home with Akshu but she always forced him to go to work. Doctor Saab, no excuses! Your patients need you.

“Meri jaan, please batao. Kya hua hai? Please chalo Doctor ke paas.”

“Ek e Doctor ki zarorat hai aur woh tum ho. Please aaj ghar pe raho.” She saw Abhi’s worried face. “Abhi, I promise bas tabiyat todhi si off hai…Doctor ki zarorat nahi hai.”

“Acha…magar I have an important surgery today so I do have to go to the hospital but I’ll come back as soon as it’s over okay?” He said kissing her head.

“FINE! Jao phir!” Akshu said angrily. “Nahi jao mujhe bhi tumhari zarorat nahi hai.” She turned around and covered her head with the blanket as Abhi looked at her stunned. Akshu was not the one to get so easily angered or irritated and she never ever complained. In fact, given his busy schedule, Abhi thought Akshu was always a little too understanding.

“Akshu? Meri jaan…baat toh suno.”

“Abhimanyu Birla. Mere mood aur karab mat karo aur mujhe sone doh aur please jao tum apni important surgery ke liye” Akshu said annoyed.

Abhimanyu looked at the time. It was 6:15 am. He was running very late. “Okay I’ll come home as soon as I can.”

“No don’t worry I’ll send your blankets to the hospital. Wahi raho ab.” Akshu said from under her blanket.

Shaking his head, he went to get ready. Baad main mana loonga tumhe.

so what happened to sweet Akshu? 😭
