Chapter 14

Even though he knew well enough that she will never pick up his phone, he still called her several times until she turned her phone off. “Akshu, please just talk to me so I can explain everything to you.”

The next day he begged his aunt to send Akshu to his cabin so he can talk to her. Mahima wanted to fix this as much as Abhimanyu as she felt it was her fault for the mess. She should not have said anything to Manjiri.

Akshu was in the Pediatric Department putting some books away on a shelf when Mahima went up to her.

“Good Morning, Akshara. How are you today?”

“Good. How are you?” Akshu smiled at her. Mahima noticed something missing in her smile. She misses you too, Abhi. She just doesn’t know it yet.

“Akshara, I was wondering if you can help me out. I have a patient who has some heart issues. Even thought medically we are doing everything we can, I think it will help him if he sees you….I mean maybe your musical therapy can lift his mood?”

“Okay. I would love to help.”

“Okay good. Please go meet Dr. Abhimanyu. He has all the details. I’ll see you later. I have an important meeting.” Mahima said running out not giving Akshu a chance to protest.

Akshara sighed. Work is work, Akshara.

She knocked on Abhimanyu’s door.

“Come in.” Abhi really didn’t want to meet anyone. When he saw Akshu come in, he jumped from his chair. “Akshu!”

“Dr. Mahima said you wanted to see me regarding a patient?” Akshu said while trying her best to not look at him.

What patient? Abhi stood there confused before realizing what was going on. He went up to Akshu. “Akshu. Please. We have to talk.” Akshara started to walk out. “If you ever considered me your friend, uss dosti ki kathir just listen to me once. Please.”

Akshara stopped and turned around. “You have 5 minutes. I have to go back to work.”

Abhimanyu smiled. “Thank you. First of all, I’m sorry if because of me you been hurt. Secondly, Akshu I had no idea about that proposal. I found out about it only yesterday. I never asked my family to take your rishta. Trust me. I will never do such a thing before making sure it’s okay with you.”

Akshu gave him a look. “Toh tum ne rishta nahi bheja tha? Good. So that means you don’t love me either?” Akshara realized she felt…sad and disappointed instead of relieved that Abhi might not love her after all. What’s wrong with you? Of course you don’t want him to love you. Why are you disappointed now?

“No..I mean yes. I mean I do love you. I’ve loved you since the day we first met.” said Abhimanyu. No point hiding it now.

“Why didn’t you tell me that before then?” Akshu said in barely a whisper.

“Because I didn’t want to scare you away. I didn’t want you to get upset like you are now. I didn’t want to lose you, Akshu. I rather have you as a friend than not have you at all. I wanted you to know me first. I wanted you to see that I was worthy of your love before I said anything to you and now…I’m sorry this is not how I wanted this to come out. My intention was never to hurt you…..I wouldn’t think of hurting you even in my wildest dreams.” Abhimanyu said tearfully.

“I know. I know you will never hurt me on purpose…but Abhi, this is not possible. We can’t be together.” Akshu sighed.

“But why not Akshu? We can still be friends. Like I said we can still be friends…I rather have you as my friend than not have you at all. I know you don’t love me and that’s okay. I can live with that. But please don’t push me away.”

“I never said I don’t…” Akshu stopped herself. What are you doing, Akshara? Of course, you don’t love him. “Abhi…Abhimanyu. How can you expect us to be friends and everything to be like before when the truth is now different?”

“But it’s not, Akshu. Our truth has always been the same. I’ve always loved you. The only difference is now that you know. Please at least give this a chance?” Abhimanyu begged.

“I am sorry, Abhi. I really can’t. I actually came to say I’ve had a job offer in Mumbai and I’m going to accept it. I think it’s better for all of us. If you ever did love me then please don’t try to stop me.” Akshu said and ran out of the room leaving a stunned Abhi by himself.

Mumbai! She’s moving to Mumbai? She can’t. She can’t.


Akshara ran all the way to the restroom, locked the door and started to cry. “I’m sorry, Abhi. It’s becoming harder and harder staying in Udaipur with reminders of my past everywhere. It’s getting harder staying with the same people who have hurt me the most. And if I stay here, I know it will be impossible to stay away from you. I can’t let the shadow of my past ruin your life too. You deserve someone who is capable of giving you the same love you give to her. You deserve someone who makes you as happy as you make me and sadly, I am not that girl.”
