Chapter 12

Manjiri couldn’t sleep all night and the next morning at 8 am, she called Swarna Goenka.

“Is everything okay, Manjiri-ji? Itni subah subah phone kiya aap ne?” Swarna asked in a worried voice.

“Ji, ji bilkul. Aap se zaruri baat karni thi. Aap toh jaante hain hum kab se Abhi ke liye ladki doondh rahe hain magar usse koi ladki pasand nahi rahi thi. Lekin finally Abhi ko ek ladki pasand aa gayi.”

“Sach mein?” Swarna was getting excited. Manjiri has always said she would love to make Aarohi her bahu and Swarna knew even Aarohi liked Abhimanyu.

“Ji. Abhi ko aap ki Akshara pasand hai.”

“Akshara??? Lekin aap toh humse pehle Aarohi ke liye baat kar rahe the.”

“Ji magar Abhimanyu maan nahi raha tha. Usse Akshara pasand hai aur agar aap theek samajhe toh Kya hum yeh rishta ke baat aage bada le.”

Swarna did notice the growing friendship between Akshu and Abhimanyu at the hospital but she didn’t think too much into but now that Manjiri mentioned it, she realized Abhimanyu did show affection for Akshu. A lot more than he ever showed to Aarohi. “Manjiri-Ji, mujhe pehle ghar ke Aur logon se baat karni hai aur Akshu se bhi. Agar Abhimanyu ko Akshu pasand hai aur Akshu ko bhi Abhimanyu toh isse achi baat kya ho sakti hai? Akshu aaj ghar aa rahi hai toh main usse baat kar lehti hoon.”

“Ji. Phir baad mein baat karte hain.” Manjiri said disconnecting the phone. If she waits for Abhimanyu, he would drag this forever. She could no longer wait to get her son married.

“Akshu I really think you need to stay for a few more days.” Abhi was not at all happy about Akshu getting discharged. Yes it was true that she seemed a lot better but he was going to miss having her in front of him all day long. He hasn’t left her side he came back from Delhi 4 days back.

“Listen if I stay here any longer, I’ll lose my mind. I know you need an excuse to not do any work but Doctor Saab, it’s back to duty for both of us from tomorrow.”

“Excuse to not do any work? Excuse me.”

“You are excused. Now go back to work.” Akshu smiled.

That smile! He was going to miss seeing that smile. Abhimanyu, you will see her tomorrow. Control yourself.

“Fine.” When she smiled at him, he couldn’t even be annoyed at her. “At least let me take you home.”

“Kairav Bhaiya is coming. I’m fine, Abhi. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“You should rest a few days at home first.”

“No way, I’ll lose my mind. Now go! Your patients are waiting for you.”

Abhi took a big breath and left the room. He stood at the window watching Akshu pack to leave and he felt a lump in his throat. She was only going home and he would still see her everyday but for some reason, he felt like he was saying goodbye for a long time.

Outside the Goenka Villa, Kairav grabbed Akshu’s things and opened her side of the door.

“Ready, Akshu? Your new room is waiting for you.” Kairav smiled at her.

“New room?”

“Haan. Tum kab se keh rahi ho tum ab badi ho gayi ho toh hum ne socha abhi tume apna room chaiye. Chalo aao. Sab intizaar kar rahe hai.” Kairav said leading Akshu to her new room.

When Akshu saw which room was now her new room, she was stunned. The room had been closed for years and when Karthik was still alive, only he went there. Nobody else was allowed to go and after Kairav passed away, Bade Papa looked the room forever. It was Naira and Karthik’s old room.

“If anyone deserves this room, it’s Karthik and Naira’s princess. This was your room as well when you were born.” Badi Mama smiled at Akshu. Akshu stood there with tears in her eyes. Her Mama’s room.

Kairav opened the door to the room which was recently renovated. A floral wallpaper covered the wall behind the bed. Akshu’s books along with pictures of her as a baby with her parents were on the bookshelf. Her guitar stood next to a comfy chair near the window. On the walls were more pictures of Akshu over the years. This really was her new room. Her family were finally trying to make an effort for her and that’s all she needed. Just assurance that her family cared for her. She gave Badi Mama a hug. “Thank you.”

“Ab tum aaram karo, theek hai?” Everyone left the room and Akshu went and sat on her new bed. She took out her phone and saw there was a message from Abhi.

“Ludo game at lunch tomorrow and this time, I’ll win.” She laughed reading it. It seemed to her like maybe everything was getting better.

Akshu was reading a book when Swarna came to her room with some fruits. She sat down next to her and smiled.

“Kya hua, Badi Mama?”

“Kuch nahi. Main soch rahi hoon ke meri bachi itni badi hogayi hai ke uss ke liye rishtey bhi aana shuru hogaye.”

“What?” Akshu was confused. Who is sending her proposals? “What do you mean, Badi Mama?”

“Manjiri-ji Ka phone aaya tha. Uss ne Abhimanyu Ka rishta manga hai. Woh keh rahi thi ke Abhimanyu tume bohat pasand karta hai.”

Akshu bursted out laughing. “Abhi? Badi Mama, Abhi mera dost hai aur kuch nahi.”

“Toh Har pyar ki kahani dosti se e shuru hoti hai. Naira Aur Karthik ki bhi hui thi. Abhimanyu ne khuda kaha hai ke woh tum se pyar karta hai aur hum sab ne bhi notice kiya hai.”

“Kya notice kiya hai? Badi Mama mujhe lagha ke finally aap sab meri care karte ho magar aap sab phir se mujhe door bhejne ki planning kar rahe ho. Kya main itni buri hoon?” Akshu started to cry. She couldn’t believe how she was so wrong about her family once more.

“Akshu shaant hi jao. Tum aise kyun soch rahi ho beta? Rishta khud Abhimanyu ke taraf se aaya hai. Tum shaant ho jao. Hum iss baare mein baad karenge. Let me bring water for you.”

Akshara sat there lost in her thoughts. Abhi ki taraf se rishta? Why did Abhi never talk to me first? I thought Abhi was different. That he understood me. That he actually cared for me. But he’s like everyone else. He didn’t consider what I might be thinking. He didn’t care to think about how I might be feeling. He’s like everyone else. Why did he not talk to me first? Why did he not just ask me how I feel?

But how do I feel? Abhi is my friend. My best friend. It’s true I am happy when I am around him. It’s true nobody else can make me laugh more than he does. It’s true when I’m with him, nothing else matters. When I’m with him, I forget all my sadness and my pain. But that’s because he’s my best friend. I can’t be in love with him. No. I WON’T be in love with him. Everyone I ever loved either left me or turned their back against me. Abhimanyu will too and if he does, I won’t be able to bear it. I can’t love Abhimanyu and before I do, it’s better to go away from him.
