Chapter 9

Swarna Goenka took the boxes she was holding, put them on her mother-in-law’s bed and sat next to her as they both opened the boxes and took out the hundreds of pictures. It had become a routine for the two ladies over the years to at least once a month go through these pictures and remember those precious moments.

Pictures of Naira and Karthik at Naira’s baby shower. Oh how much Naira, Karthik and the family wished for that moment. For years after Kairav was born, they prayed and prayed for another baby. All the mannats they made. All the pujas that were done. Naira’s baby shower was a grand event.

Pictures from the day Akshu was born. Everyone smiling with tears in their eyes holding their tiny sleeping bundle of joy. Karthik not letting Akshu out of his sight even for a second. “Remember Maa-ji, how Karthik would fight with anyone who wanted to hold Akshu?” Swarna laughed holding a picture of Karthik looking lovingly at his daughter. “Haan. He kept saying that only he could hold his princess and nobody else.” Mimi recalled. Akshu’s birth meant all of Karthik and Naira’s wishes were granted. All of their dreams come true. Karthik told everyone how his daughter was the best of him and Naira.

Then pictures of baby Akshu coming home. Their ghar ki Lakshmi. And Akshu really was their Lakshmi. She not only brought so much joy with her but her coming also healed her Bade Papa from his illness. The Goenka’s businesses reached new heights. Karthik called her his lucky charm. Pictures from her naam-karan and from her Annaprashan and how she picked the tape recorder. Karthik had announced then that his princess will become a singer and how everyone laughed.

Then….pictures from that fateful day they lost Naira. Pictures of Naira, Karthik, Kairav and Akshu happily posing not knowing what was to come. A last picture of a mother tenderly looking at her sleeping baby. Akshu wasn’t even 6 months old. Swarna wiped her tears. They didn’t have the heart to show this last picture of her and Naira to Akshu.

“Swarna! Look!” Mimi said holding a picture of baby Akshu in a white dress from the day she crawled for the first time. Swarna was holding her and they were both laughing.

“Alllley mera pyara bacha, meri jaan.” Swarna said taking the picture and kissing it. “Kitni cute thi na hamari Akshu?”

“Sach mein. Kabhi kabhi toh darti thi usse dekh ke ke meri nazar na lag jaye meri bachi ko. Look at her smile toh? This is the smile that brought Kittu back to us.” Swarna nodded. After losing Naira, Karthik went into such deep depression that the family was scared of losing him too. But it was Akshu’s laughter and smile that finally made Karthik snap back. Karthik always used to say how could anyone be sad after listening to Akshu’s laughter. The sound of her laughter made him feel alive again and her smile brought him the most joy.

Then pictures from Sirat and Karthik’s wedding. Pictures of Sirat with Akshu. Akshu with a pigtail. Mimi laughed. “What did Kittu call Akshu when her hair was like this?”

“Pebbles Flintstone.” Laughed Swarna.

Mimi pulled up another picture and looked at it sadly. It was of Akshu with her Pebbles hair, barely 18 months old, sitting next to a new born Aarohi. Akshu had a big smile on her face and her hand was resting on Aarohi’s head. “I sometimes forget how little Akshu was when Aarohi was born.”

“Haan Maa-ji. Akshu was always so sweet and loving to her sister that it makes us forget they are almost the same age.”

There were many more pictures over the years. From Akshu’s birthday parties and school functions. From Diwali to holidays. But there was always one thing that stayed the same in all the pictures no matter when they were taken and that was the smile on Akshu’s face. “Kitni khush rehti thi na hamari Akshu?? Saara din she either was singing, dancing or laughing. The sound of her laughter not only made Kittu alive but also gave life to our house. She was so full of joy. Her eyes always full of love. She would go around the house giving hugs to everyone.” Mimi said trying not to cry.

“Haan. Now she barely looks at us without anger and stays locked up in her room all day.” Swarna nodded sadly.

“Kittu used to say call her his khushiyon ki potli. He used to say how he loved all three of his children equally but Akshu had a special place in his heart. She was Naira’s last nishani. He did everything to keep Akshu always happy and look at us? We couldn’t even keep her with us for a few months after he left.” Now Mimi was crying.

“Ji Maa-ji. Our bachi is in this state because of us and now we have to be the ones to bring her back to her old self. We have to do everything in our power.”

Mimi and Swarna put the pictures away and sat there in silence remembering their little girl the way she used to be…

Akshara had a routine when she got to work. She will stop by Abhi’s cabin to greet him and talk to him for a few minutes before going to see what duties she was assigned to that day. If Abhi didn’t have any appointments, he will come by and watch her work. At lunch they will meet in the cafeteria to have lunch together. Over the last few months, Akshara had grown very fond of Abhi and considered him to be a very good friend. She liked that they could talk about anything without Abhi ever asking her any personal questions. Akshara was surprised at herself at how comfortable she was around Abhimanyu and could laugh and joke freely. She felt light around him. Something she hasn’t felt in many years. It scared her at times at how close they were becoming but she couldn’t bring herself to back away either. She felt happier. Even when she was home, she was happy now. She spent more time with her family. She would go home from work and go to Mimi’s room and put her head on Mimi’s lap who would stroke her hair. Just like when Akshu was little. She would help Badi Mama cook though she spent more time eating. She played Ludo with Kairav Bhaiya and Vansh Bhaiya and AG (and she won as always). She even caught herself talking to Bade Papa without getting angry. Something was changing in her and she found herself to be okay with that.

For Abhimanyu, he planned his schedule around Akshu. He made sure to be in his cabin no matter what when it was time for Akshu to start work. He made sure to go see her at least once before lunch and he always always made sure to have lunch with her. The more time he spent with her, the more time he wanted with her. He could not get enough of her. Of her voice, her smile, her laughter. Of all the weird expressions she made, of her fragrance, of the way she was always fighting with her hair to stay away from her face. Of the way she bumped into everything or always dropped things. Of her home remedies that probably didn’t work. Abhimanyu Birla simply could not get enough of Akshara Goenka. He was utterly and madly in love with her and every time he saw her, he fell a little more in love.

Akshara went to her room trying to find a clean top to wear. While trying to make kachoris, she knocked all the flour on her shirt. She looked around and saw a red top. She didn’t recognize it but Badi Mama had gotten her so many new clothes that Akshu didn’t recognize half of them. It was on her side of the wardrobe so she changed into it. As she was walking out of her room, she bumped into Aarohi who was coming in. Aarohi took one look at her and turned red.

“Dil nahi bara tumhara? Sab kuch mera cheen liya ab mere kapde be logi?”

Oh dammit. It’s Aarohi’s top. “Sorry Aaru. I didn’t realize this was yours. Let me change into something else.” Akshu smiled at her sister.

Aarohi let out a bitter laugh. “You really think I’m going to wear this now that your manhoosiyat has touched it?” Aarohi screamed.

“Calm down, Aarohi. I told you I didn’t know it was yours.”

“Typical. First you take what’s mine and then act so innocent.” Aarohi’s screaming brought everyone else to the girls’ room.

“Kya ho raha yahan? Aaru, why are you screaming?” Badi Mama asked.

“Badi Mama, I thought this top is something you got for me but it’s Aarohi’s.” Akshu rolled her eyes.

“Bas itni si baat ke liye itna gussa, Aarohi?” Bade Papa said. “Akshu behn hai tumhari. Agar galati si she wore your top, why make such a big deal about it?”

“Nahi hai meri behn!” Aarohi was still screaming.

“Good. I don’t want to be your sister either.”

“See! Mere sab kuch cheen ke now she says this?”

“Aarohi. It’s just a shirt!” Kairav said.

Akshara had enough. She went to her wardrobe to find something else to wear her.

“Haan go. Go from this room, from this house and from our lives. Why are you back anyways? Who told you to come back? We were happier without you spreading your bad luck everywhere!” Aarohi wanted to smash something into Akshu’s face. Akshara who tried to act like how she was perfect and did everything in her power to take everything away from her.

“Bas Aarohi!” Kairav Bhaiya said.

“Aap bhi mujhe daante ge? Of course. I’m your step sister that’s why. This this Akshara! She took everything from this house. First her bad luck killed her own mother and if that was not enough, because of her, I lost my mother too. She killed my mother! Now she’s trying to steal Abhimanyu from me.” Aarohi was still screaming.

Akshara turned to look at her. She killed my mother! For years, Akshara tried to block that memory. Sirat falling down the stairs, taking her last breath in Akshara’s arms. She killed my mother! Even though, Aarohi was still screaming things, that was all Akshara kept hearing. She killed my mother! Akshara looked around her and everything was slowly disappearing. There was darkness all around her. She killed my mother! She looked around but couldn’t see anything. She tried to move but couldn’t move. It was if she had forgotten how to breath. She tried to take a breath but struggled. She killed my mother! She felt her legs give up and she fell on the ground. The last memory she had before she closed her eyes was of Abhimanyu Birla sitting with her in the cafeteria laughing and asking her, “so what else does meethi dana cures?”

“Abhi…” Akshu whispered and lost consciousness.

Abhimanyu walked around making small talk to the people around him. Physically he was stuck at the medical conference in Delhi, but all his thoughts were about about Akshara. He hasn’t seen her in three days. That was the longest he had gone without seeing her since they met 3 months ago. Every time he called her, either she didn’t pick up (typical) or answered saying she will call back as she was busy and didn’t call (again, typical). Akshara avoided her phone as much as she could.

As he went to listen to a doctor talking to him about some new procedure regarding a heart transplant, Abhimanyu wondered what Akshu could be doing. Maybe she was playing her guitar. He imagined her trying to play her guitar while getting annoyed with a strand of her hair covering her face. He smiled to himself. Just then, he felt a jitter. It was as if someone far away was calling him for help. He turned around but there were only doctors around him happily discussing things with each other. He was sure he heard it. In all those noise, he heard someone say his name.

“Akshara.” whispered Abhi.
