Chapter 3
When Akshara woke up the next morning, she had a bad headache. That always happened when she had her panic attacks. She made herself some ginger tea and sat at the small dinning room chair in her tiny living room/dinning room. Her roommate Sophie was still not back from her boyfriend’s place so Akshara had the apartment all to herself that morning. The apartment was very tiny with two small rooms that barely had room for a bed but it was the only thing she could half afford. Akshara didn’t have that many possessions to begin with so it wasn’t an issue for her unlike Sophie who had her things all over the apartment.
Akshara opened her laptop and logged into her email. She didn’t check her email for the last few days and remembered she had sent out some job applications to different hospitals in India for a job as a music therapist. The concept of Music Therapy was still new and not many hospitals offered a position. The few that did were mostly in Delhi and Mumbai which was what Akshara’s preference was. She wanted to stay as far away from Udaipur as possible. But because her choices were so limited and she didn’t want to risk not having a job once she reached India, she also applied to the only hospital that had a position open for a Musical Therapist in Udaipur: The Birla Hospital. She had heard about the hospital before when she used to live in Udaipur and she was sure someone in her extended family was married to a Birla but she couldn’t remember who. The Birla Hospital’s Music Therapy program was just starting and Akshara thought they probably want a person with more experience. Akshara’s only experience was from her internship and her volunteering work but it was worth trying.
She scrolled through her emails. An end of year party at NYU. Some Christmas sales at different stores and an email from the Birla Hospital. It was sent on Tuesday and it was now Saturday. Akshara! Make a habit of checking your emails! She quickly opened it and couldn’t believe her luck. Out of all the hospitals, the only one interested in her was the hospital in Udaipur. Krishna-ji. What exactly do you have planned for me? The coordinator named Mukesh wanted to know if Akshara was available for an interview with Dr. Mahima Birla on Monday at 8 am IST. It would be late Sunday night for Akshara but she replied back saying she was available. She had to have a job once she got to Udaipur, no matter what. After replying to the email, she quickly started to prepare for the interview. She didn’t have to go to work until 2 pm so she had a few more hours to work on how she will present herself to Dr. Mahima Birla.

As soon as Abhimanyu stepped inside his house after work, he heard her laughing away with his mom. Aarohi. He took a deep breath, tried to smile and went to greet her.
“Dekho! Abhi bhi aa gaya.” Manjiri said getting up to greet her son.
“Hello Abhimanyu.” Aarohi greeted him.
“Hi Aarohi. Tum yahan?” Why does she pop up everywhere, wondered Abhimanyu.
“Haan Aarohi ko mane bulaya tha. Beta, Mrs. Mehta’s son is getting married next weekend. Remember I told you? I think you and Aarohi should go together.”
“I would love to, aunty.” Aarohi smiled.
“Maa. I have a few surgeries planned next weekend. There is no way I can go.” Abhimanyu hated going to weddings and he especially didn’t want to go with Aarohi. He decided to make sure he has many surgeries planned as possible.
“Beta you can ask someone else to take over?” Manjiri asked hopefully.
“‘Maa, they are my cases. I can’t just hand them to anyone else. I am sure you understand, Aarohi?” Abhimanyu asked.
“Oh for sure. Work comes first. Anyways I need to go. Mimi and Badi Mama are waiting for me.” Aarohi said her goodbye and left.
“Abhi! Why do you not give Aarohi a chance? She’s such a nice girl from such a nice family. She’s doing her internship at Birla Hospital….”
“Maa,” Abhimanyu cut her off, “I told you I am not interested in marrying Aarohi or anyone else.”
“Toh tum kabhi shaadi nahi karoge?” Manjiri cried.
“Of course karonga. Jab woh milegi tab.”
“Pata nahi yeh kaun hai that you been searching for.” Manjiri sighed.
“Hai koi ajnabi chehra. When I meet her I’ll know. I know she’s out there and she’s not Aarohi. Now let me go clean up.”
Manjiri watched her son walk away and she stood there worried. Sometimes she felt she knew her son inside out but other times he was such a mystery to her.
Abhimanyu entered his room and put his stuff away. He looked in the mirror at his own reflection.
“I know you are out there. You need me as much as I need you and one day we will meet.”

When Akshara returned home from work that day, she found Sophie running around their tiny apartment searching for something. Sophie could never keep her things in one place. Akshara sighed.
“Aksh! You are here! Go get ready we are getting late.”
“Sophie, stop calling me Aksh please.” Akshara rolled her eyes. “And where are we going?” Akshara put her backpack down and sat on the couch.
“I told you. Party at Mabel’s apartment!”
“I’m not coming, I already told you.”
“But why? Aksh, everyone is going to be there!” Sophie exclaimed.
“And that’s exactly the reason I am not going.” Akshara got up to go change.
Sophie sighed. She could never understand her best friend even after living with her for 4 years. To know Akshara was to love her yet Akshara avoided people like the plague. She had no interest in making friends or going out on dates. She was stunning with big brown eyes and a beautiful kind smile and so many boys were interested in going out with her but Akshara turned them all down. In the beginning, Sophie thought maybe Akshara preferred the other gender so she even introduced Akshara to a few girls until Akshara learned of what Sophie was trying to do and was horrified. She could never understand why she had such a big wall around her where nobody could get in. Akshara never talked about her past or her family. Yet, many times Sophie had woken up to hear Akshara crying in her room at night. I hope one day you learn how to open up and share your pain, Aksh.
“Aksh! Listen! You are going to India soon anyways. So this is a chance to see all your friends one last time.”
“They are not my friends, Soph. I don’t even know their names. You know being around too many people triggers my anxiety and I had a long day so I’m going to bed.” Akshara was already in her PJs sitting on her bed. Sophie knew it was a lost battle.
“Okay fine. I’ll see you tomorrow. I’ll sleep over at Nick’s.”
“Bye. Have fun.”
Once Sophie left, Akshara opened her laptop and worked a little more on her presentation before falling asleep.

Dr. Mahima Birla was never late for anything. But this Monday morning, she was running late. It was already 7:45 a.m but she was still home with her breakfast not yet served. She had to do the video call with the Music Therapist from New York at 8.
“Manjiri where are you? I’m running very late.”
“Coming, didi!”
Just then, the driver came up to Mahima.
“Sandeep, please put all of my stuff in the car I’m running very late.”
“Madam, there is a road blockage right outside the neighborhood so we have to wait for 30 more minutes.” Sandeep said with his head bowed down.
“Mahima, just do your interview from home. It’s a video call anyways.” Anand suggested.
“I guess that’s the only option I have. Manjiri please bring my breakfast to the study.”
+++++++++++++
Akshara tried to look presentable. She had borrowed a blouse from Sophie and even had Sophie help her put eyeliner and lipgloss on. She hated giving interviews. She was good at her job but bad at explaining things.
She made Sophie promise to not come out of her room and sat on her dinning room chair and turned on her laptop. Please cooperate. Her laptop like everything else she owned had seen better days and sometimes liked to stop working in middle of her doing something.
After 5 minutes of Akshara waiting, she got the call from Dr. Mahima Birla on Zoom.
“Hello Ms. Akshara Goenka. How are you doing today?”
Even though Dr. Mahima looked stern, she still had a kindness around her. Akshara relaxed and started the interview.
“So as I was saying earlier, Music therapy has been proven to be very helpful with dementia patients in making them stay calm and content. My work in a local nursing home has shown me what a difference music can make to patients in such situations.”
“Very impressive. You also said you have experience working with people with mental health issues?”
“Yes ma’am. I have volunteered in a youth facility before that houses young adult suffering from various mental health related disorders such as depression, bipolar disorders as well as severe anxiety. I’ve first hand seen the difference Music Therapy have made to these young adults.”
“I see you don’t have any professional experience yet. Usually we require everyone we hire to have a minimum of 2 years of experience but I see you will just be graduating this coming week? But I am very impressed with all your volunteer work that you have done with different groups. It shows you have a passion for this job. My biggest concern is that you live in a big city like New York. Will you be able to adjust to a life in Udaipur? Our work ethics and culture is very different from that in America especially for someone who grew up there.” In the course of this interview, Mahima already knew she liked Akshara. There was something very peculiar about her that Mahima couldn’t point out to but whatever it was, it made Akshara endearing.
“Ma’am actually I was born in Udaipur and grew up there. My family still lives there so I won’t have any issue adjusting.” Akshara assured her.
“Well in that case, we need someone to start from next Monday. I would like to meet you once in person before I make an offer. How soon can you get to India?” Mahima asked.
“I can get there before Monday.”
“Good. Will you play something for me so I can see what you are capable of?”
+++++++++++++++
Abhimanyu couldn’t find the file he was looking for. He looked everywhere. It must be in the study. As he opened the door to the study, he saw his aunt in middle of a video call.
“Will you play something for me so I can see what you are capable of?” Mahima asked.
“Sorry for disturbing, Tayi-Ji. I’m just going to take my file and leave.” Abhimanyu said softly.
“No Abhimanyu stay. I’m interviewing a candidate for the music therapy job and she’s about to play something.
“Tayi-Ji. I’m runn….” Just then a guitar started to play on the laptop and the sweetest most beautiful voice Abhimanyu ever heard started to sing. He couldn’t even make out the words but he felt every hair on his body stand up. He walked around Mahima’s chair to see the face of this girl and as he saw her, he froze.
