I think Adi has always been a person with self-worth issues because his entire family constantly demeans him, talks about him like koi use bardaasht nahin kar sakta, like M was doing some ehsaan on him by being in a relationship with him etc etc.
Before he realized his feelings for Imlie, he was himself trying to send her away from him. But everything changed after PD2 wala gunshot incident….that ambulance wala Adi realized for the first time that he can’t live without Imlie. So even though he was yet to realize his feelings fully then, he had gone through the experience of almost having lost her….that set the basis for his vulnerability about losing Imlie.
Then after that Imlie suddenly leaving for PD without telling him was the next big jhatka for him abandonment wise….tab bhi sab log use constantly jataate the ki he’s the bura person, he’s the one constantly hurting Imlie etc etc toh woh baat bhi humesha kahin na kahin kept pinching him.There is absolutely some sense of lingering guilt in him always about how he’s hurt Imlie in the past when he didn’t give her her due rights….but alongside that guilt is the truth that he loves her with all his heart. He loves her like he’s never loved anyone in his life before. The fear of losing her has developed so much precisely cuz the timing of realizing his feelings for her have coincided with her having walked away from him…..and then even after they both admitted their feelings to each other in PD3 in that sense, Imlie still kept pushing him away cuz of Malini. That’s the phase where his insecurities really deepened further I felt. That bombardment from all sides about everyone cursing him for the divorce from M while Imlie still continuing to randomly shut him out or just walk away. It all took its toll.
He has always been made to feel he wasn’t even good enough for M😆…..and tab toh he only had obligation and guilt that made him respond in a token manner. Imlie toh he loves with all his heart and people still keep telling him that he alone is alway wrong, always unworthy of her. Is sabke beech mein if Imlie walks out on him again and randomly starts acting so familiar with a total stranger, toh insecurities toh trigger honge hi.
More than Adi’s insecurities, I think what bothers people is his sharp tongued taunts 😆….apna hurt express karke ke liye woh twisted self loathing waale taunts maarega and koi nahin samajhta the abandonment waale insecurities from which all that is stemming. When you love someone this all consumingly for the first time in your life and they keep walking away from you on and off for some reason or the other, it will mess with your head further. Imlie abhi tak nahin samajh paayi that she is Adi’s first and only true love.

That epiosode he was like “bura toh sahi pati he na”.
I really feel like he was begging to her not go away from him & consider him as husband.
By all these new mess his insecurities doubled.
