Sairat part is not that prominent in this one. But you will see a subtle thread of attachment and trust. Sai and Virat have settled down with each other, confessed, consummated, everything ho gaya.

Virat is a policeman for a change. More like a spying husband.

At first I wrote Samrat in place of Karishma. *Pakhi making love to Samrat thinking it to be Shiva/Virat* But then changed it, and put Samrat as a person who witnesses it all. I think this has come out better.

The characters are all grey and interesting. Every chapter made me fish out and wonder of all the possibilities. The story is quite different from the others on the forum!

CH 9

A few days later, at Chavan Niwas, dinner table had an interesting discussion.

The scene was as usual. Bhavani kaku at the head of the table, flanked by Ninad and Omkar. They were in turn flanked by Shivani bua and Sonali Kaku, respectively. Ashwini and Patralekha were serving. Rest of the clan occupied their usual positions with Virat at the other end directly facing kaku.

“So Virat, how are things these days?”

“Oh just fine, kaku. The same crime scenes, the same investigations. The same court room proceedings and the same bail applications…” He chewed on a morsel. “But these days there is an interesting trend seen. Crimes against women are increasing!”

“Ho na..” Sonali added on. “What is this world coming to, I don’t know. Why should women get out of the house and invite all this…”

“That doesn’t rule out dowry and domestic abuse, Sonali Vaini!” Shivani Bua rolled her eyes at the medieval mindset.

“Any woman has to win over everyone in the house. She has to have good blood in her veins. A girl with good upbringing and culture will never suffer all these things…!”

“Jai Bhavani..” Karishma muttered and Sonali turned to her.“ You said something?”

“Me? Nothing..nothing! Karishma pulled on an innocent face.“ Virat dada, you said that a new trend of violence against women is seen?”

“Yes. More of a blackmail. There are interesting cases coming in from other police stations. A typical scene would be a young college going girl who becomes friendly with a boy of her age. They exchange letters, gifts, photographs…Eventually the boy starts blackmailing the girl or even reverse happens…typically after a breakup..”

“Mast Ha mast..” Bhavani Kaku’s signature scorn was evident. “But why girls have to do this? And get into problems?”

Virat sipped some water and continued.

“It’s not limited to college going girls alone. Even married women are equally gullible. A very typical scene. A rich housewife is lonely. Her husband is at work or could be even abroad. She craves for attention. A young man becomes friendly over social media. Before long they are chatting, she is divulging details, photographs which ultimately become instruments of blackmail. Many such scandals are being unearthed…”

“Scandals?” There was uncomfortable silence around.

“Yes. The point is, the blackmail is not limited to money alone. The blackmailer then asks the woman to send some more contacts of other women like her. Even recommend him to them. In other words indirectly recruits her in the scandal!”

“Horrible…”

“But why do women have to fall pray for such frauds?”

“You never know, Kaku. It is friendship to start with. The offender could be a family contact, or even a professional, such as a security advisor, a parlour groomer, photographer, or a fitness trainer…”

Patralekha choked on her food. Samrat offered her a glass of water.

“The how to ensure that the person doesn’t have any dubious intentions?”

“There is no way to be hundred percent sure. The alarm bells should ring when such a person starts becoming extra friendly and asking for personal details or photographs. Even then, you never know. The person may secretly record a video or click some photographs…”

“And then..?”

“One fine day, disappear from the scene. Even stage a breakup. The victim frets for him, misses him, sends him messages, even goes to his house to find out what’s wrong. The hooks are on…”

“That’s horrible…”

“Yes, it is. That’s the reason the police is there!”

Rest of the meal was completed in silence. The mood was sombre. Different people had different things going on in their minds. Patralekha, mechanically swallowing her meal, thought about the events that occurred a few days ago. 10 days? To be exact. Shiva had sent her an ultrashort message saying that he was not keeping good health and was to be excused for some time. She was to continue her exercises in the meanwhile. She stuck to the schedule religiously, even messaged him intermittently. He replied to a few, and then it stopped altogether. She had cribbed to Samrat and they both had even visited the shanty where he stayed. The door was locked. She had dismissed it as one of his busy hours. But now, with Virat’s disclosure, it looked so different..

Winding up after the dinner, she made up her mind. She needed to know more about such cases. She was about to knock on Virat’s door when she heard her name being mentioned from within.

“Pakhi has pulled down..her efforts to trim down are showing now..”

“Yes, she hardly eats. I am worried she may fall sick some day..Yesterday, she stood up suddenly and almost fainted…”

“Did you tell Samrat about this?” Virat sat up with concern.

“No, I told Mansi Bua. Dada had gone out!”

“did Bua talk to her? I mean if she needs any medical help..”

“I am there for that. But she has to open up and ask. Even today, she just picked on the food. I think I should tell Dada…”

“He was sitting next to her. He must have noticed. You just let it be, OK? Unnecessary it will be termed as interference and Pakhi will feel insulted!”

There was silence for a while. The only sounds that could be heard were the whisking of curtains and rustling of clothes. The topics veered off to the current interest.

“You were talking about the new trend these days..”

“Of blackmail?”

“Yes. So you investigate, arrest a person. But how does the law deal with such blackmailers? Does the victim get any protection?”

“Well, getting conviction is very difficult. The blackmailer would just say that the victim parted with the photos, videos willingly. So…”

“Hmmm…Its very tough and trying for the victim!”

“Yes. The victim has to prove that she is the wronged party. It is even difficult when you have asked for the services of the person, say for example the parlour groomer. He would just raise his hands and say that she asked for all that..so how is he guilty?”

Sai was silent for a while. Virat continued relentless, “On top of all that is the concept of photobombing. The photo when clicked is harmless enough. But not when used for blackmail. Then these culprits have hidden cams in the room, say a parlour or a fitness studio. That’s how a video is shot in a clandestine manner…”

Pakhi was stunned to the core. She had sent some of her photographs to Shiva some time back, just as a measure of reporting on progress. It seemed like a normal thing to do. But now…

She backed off and ran to the room.

She made a resolve for the next day.
