Here is a bit of history for you.
Arunita started her IG account in November end 2020 just before the start of IG 12. So the account is about a year old.
PD had a much older IG a/c. He had 350K+ followers even before Arunita started her IG journey.
By end March 2021 Arunita had narrowed the gap to 200K. PD was at 400K (odd), and she was at 210K (odd).
Throughout the rest of the Idol journey Arunita chipped away at the lead and on 31st July 2021 PD had 993K followers and she had 888K.

As is to be expected, PD's win added many new fans after 15th August and at one time he again built a lead of 200K+.

The lead is now close to 100K again and the trends are opposite. PD is losing fans and Aru is gaining.
If this trend continues then Aru will make 1.5M before PD reaches 1.6M.

Some loss is natural and happens in all IG accounts.
IG cleans up accounts at regular intervals and many inactive/duplicate/spam accounts are removed in the process.
If you are not getting more new followers than the one's you are losing, then the trend is negative.
Also, some people close their IG accounts or purge who they follow. When celebs like Neha Kakkar do it, then it is news :)
As far as the Octopus impact is concerned, it is likely that Arunita followers, who followed PD because of her signed out as a result of what happened. This is speculative.
PD fans may have done the same if they followed Arunita for him but that number may have been smaller. Plus some remain to troll her. Arunita fans don't seem to troll Pawan. At least I have not come across instances.

Yes, it has been going at about 1M/3.5 days for the best part of December.
It looks good for 50M in 3 months now.
