Chapter-1
One week ago
Two policemen are searching inside a bag lying beside a dead body closing their nostrils so as not to inhale the odour of the corpse.
"Kuchh mila Pawar?" The senior officer asked.
Cop Pawar shook his head.
The senior officer rummaged in the pockets of the dead man and found a burnt laminated thing in his shirt pocket. It was so burnt that nothing was visible. The officer traced the engraved letters on the ID card and got up, saying, "Pawar chalo, HN College jana parega hame."
---------
Present time
Today Malhar had skipped reading the newspaper. He had cracked the murder case and he knew yesterday was the day the court had passed the sentence to the murderer. The murderer was the childhood friend of the deceased and the cause of murder was the dispute over a love affair. Despite trying hard, Malhar couldn't forget the horrific condition when they found the corpse, the distraught parents of the deceased, the culprit's mother asking him with beseeching eyes- They won't give him death sentence, na? It was not a crime of passion, it was a calculated, cold-blooded murder but the murderer looked so young and innocent. Malhar wondered about the days when they were kids. Did they knew while playing marbles together that one of them was going to kill the other in such a heinous manner? They were best friends- and yet...Both of them were on the verge of discovering the world, fulfilling their dreams. It was one of the reasons Malhar didn't like watching movies. They sell a highly rosy, shining version of romance to youngsters completely ignoring the darkness this dazzle is breeding in their minds.
Malhar was washing his face when his phone started ringing. Wiping his face, he picked up the call, "Good Morning Sir."
It was Commissioner speaking, "Good Morning Malhar. Tumhe to pata hi hoga aaj Aurangabad ki nayi DM join karne wali h." The Commissioner was from Pondicherry so his Hindi was weak and he had a habit of saying masculine verbs and nouns as feminine ones. So Malhar always mentally converted every feminine verb uttered by Commissioner to masculine by default.
"Accha DM Sir aaj join karenge?" Malhar confirmed.
"Haan DM ma'am aaj join karegi," Commissioner answered. Ab ye kucch zyada ho raha h? Lagta hai Commissioner Sir ko Aurangabad me itni Hindi bolni pari ki English me bhi Sir ko ma'am kehne lage. Malhar hated occassions like that. Naye DM join karein, unke liye bouquet khareedo, welcome karo, logon ko us DM ki shaan me kaseede padhte dekho jiska naam bhi kal tak unhe pata nahi tha and us par ye bhi expect kiya jaaye ki aap unke unfunny jokes pe haso bhi. Malhar always found these things too cringy but today, he was actually relieved. The murder case was still stuck in his mind and maybe the usual circus of bureaucratic frivolity can distract him.
Malhar almost reached the DM office when he realised he forgot bringing the bouquet of flowers. Once again, due to his habit of reaching a place half an hour earlier, Malhar reversed his police car and finally found a flower shop.
"Bhau, ek bouquet chahiye official welcome ke liye," Malhar said. He merely received a grunt in response from inside a room behind the shop. After waiting for almost fifteen minutes, when the shopkeeper showed no intention of returning back, Malhar hurriedly took a bouquet in a jute bag and put the money on counter.
By the time Malhar reached office, he was already late.
As he entered the DM cabin, he heard a sharp voice, "Kucch zyada hi punctual nahi hain aap Mr. Rane?" Malhar looked. A woman wearing a pastel blue shirt with black blazer and black trousers was standing in front of him.
"Sahi kehte hain log," Malhar muttered, "DM se zyada bhaav to DM ke gharwale khaate hain. DM sahab bechare kone me khade hain magar unki Mrs. ko fir raub jhaadna h."
Malhar went to the man standing in the corner and said, "Welcome to Aurangabad Sir." The man took the bouquet and gave it to the woman.
"DM sahab to poore joru ke gulaam nikle," Malhar thought, "Vaise aisi bhayankar wife jiski ho vo kar hi kya sakta hai."
The woman put the bouquet roughly so that a letter hidden in the flowers came at top. The DM started reading the letter-
Dear K
Chaand mera dil
Chandni ho tum
Chalke chaupatti beach me
Hum tum ho jayein gum
O mere dil ke chain
Tere bina saari duniya ko mujhe kar dena hai ban
One two three four
Mere dil me naache pyaar ka mor
Zara tasweer se to nikal ke saamne aa meri Mehbooba
Dil dooba dil dooba teri aankhon me ye dil dooba
"Bas kariye madam," Malhar said, "Sabko rulaengi kya?" Everyone was trying hard to suppress their giggles.
"Himmat kaise hui aapki officer?" The woman's face was dark.
"Arey bouquet exchange ho gaya mera kisi se?" Malhar said, "Vaise bhi main ye bouquet aapke liye nahi laaya tha. Ye phool main DM Sir ke liye laaya tha."
"DM Sir? Aurangabad ki DM main hoon- Kalyani Deshmukh."
Malhar replied, "Matlab aapka naam bhi K se start hota h?"
"Bahut acchi tarah jaanti hoon main aap Jaison ko Officer Rane. Kisi female ko acchi position par dekha nahi ki shuru ho jaate hain use undermine karne me. Aapko kya laga aapke cheap paintre mujhpar kaam ayenge. Jab aap ek DM ke saath itni badtameezi kar sakte hain to pata nahi Aurangabad ki aam ladkiyon..."
"Thamb," Malhar said, "Vo kya hai na ma'am, jhoothi aur galat baatein sunne ka mera quota sirf 5 minutes tak ka hai. Isse zyada main na kisi ka nonsense sunta hoon. Haan maine carelessly bouquet liya aur bina check kiye use le aaya, uske liye I'm sorry. Magar usse zyada na meri koi intention thi aur na hi aap mere liye itni important hain ki main ye sab karoon. Aur apni position ka ghamand kisi aur ko dikhaiyega, ye Aurangabad hai, yahaan sirf aam janta ki chalti h aur fir uske baad Malhar Rane ki. Jitna jaldi aap ye samajh jayengi, utna better rahega aapke liye."
"Oh really?" Kalyani raised her eyebrow.
Malhar hated the smug expression on Kalyani's face. Everytime, in situations like this, Malhar felt so lucky that his best friend was a sweet girl like Sampada and since their teenage he knew he would marry her only. In the gritty world of catching criminals, Sampada was all that was good and innocent in the world.
Was she too harsh with ACP Rane? Kalyani asked herself. Ever since escaping from her marriage, Kalyani always double checked her every action. She could never be sure what was deemed too weak, too mean, too strong, too naive for a woman. She just knew she couldn't let anyone repeat what Atharv did to her. Why was she getting distracted? Her only motive to come Aurangabad was to search for her baby whom she thought was dead earlier.
Why was Malhar fussing over some egoistic woman? He had his loving family and of course, his affectionate Sampada. As long as he had them, nothing can make him sad.
