Yes she is. Comedy is taken as something easy to do not its not.

Although she did choose poor scripts but still she isn't given good credit like other actresses

The films you named, Juhi did them all much later post mid 2000s.

Juhi rarely stepped out of her comfort zone in 90s. Her rejecting Mrityudand and Border is biggest example of this. The former film single handedly won Madhuri and Shabana huge accolades for their acting in that film. I understand Border may have felt like a men's film to Juhi and she must have assumed there was not much for heroine to do in that film. But rejecting a solid woman dominated film like Mrityudand shows how she chickened out from doing a challenging role as an actor. She did regret not doing that film later.

I am not doubting her talent or potential. But she always played it safe when she was at her prime. She knew she was admired for her innocence, chirpy, cute, bubbly, childlike, gentle, vulnerable damsel in distress image and she milked it like no tomorrow.

I am sure Jaya and Rishi praised her potential and comic timing but to audience, nothing was seen in 90s except 2 types of roles she used to do. Chirpy girl or gentle girl in distress. And for that, Juhi has no one else except her own poor choices to blame. She never made serious effort to step out of her comfort zone even when she had best of offers at her door.

I am surprised she chose to do faltu films like Gang, Andaz, Loafer, Jhooth Bole Kauwa kate, Karobar over Mrityudand, Raja Hindustani, DTPH, Border back then.

3 Deewarein, My Brother Nikhil, Gulaabi gang showed a new side of her only later. She completely played it safe in 90s.

I don't remember Mrithudand changing any perception about Madhuri. Not like Chandni Bar did for Tabu. As for Border, all the women got short shrift. Is Tabu remembered for her role in it? Or Jackie Shroff's 30 second love interest? Pooja was the only one who got some attention. And that was only because she was featured for in the song Sandese aate hai. I'd rate her role in Gang pretty similar.to the ladies' roles in Border but with more screentime. The film is wonderful as it explores the aspirations of youth and the flawless way the chief villain disintegrated the Gang from within. But while all the men's roles are well rounded, Juhi pretty much had nothing to except coerce Jackie Shroff to walking the straight path. But the film didn't do well. I'd concede Raja Hindustani and Dil Toh Pagal hai as mistakes. Another point. It is easy to dismiss Hum hain rahi pyaar hai as a simple rom-com and her character as funny. But she did speak Tamil very well in her arguments with her father. And she spoke very fast too. So she gets credit for taking the effort. Her character gets equal screen-time with Aamir and she has her own arc and not just made another prop. Not only Juhi, all the 90s heroines such as Madhuri,Manisha,Karishma all have done some terrible movies. They just took whatever was offered to them.

Juhi was a good actress

She could outwit govinda in comedy easily she was that good

But she never experimented

Reason may be she married in 1994 very early just when she got success

Darr and hum hain rahi pyar ke released a year before marriage

Her family faced many issues like both her parents died when she was young so i guess her priority became family and settling down than becoming no. 1 or top actress

Its not easy to lose parents one after another and brother in coma for years sister had cancer etc and yet go on thinking of career and no.1 etc

I guess because of those tragedy juhi focus was not career or no1. but family she was busy taking care of them and her husband family

So i will not fault her for not focusing on career after 1994 and rejecting big movies etc when you have person tragedy going on people make wrong decision on career or no longer are competitive

Yes if juhi had focused on career like a sridevi or madhuri she could have gone top by 1998 like karishma or madhuri

Further both khans amir and salman had tiff with her and refused to work with her

Only SRK continued supporting her thru her personal tragedy

SRK was one who worked max with her after marraige and did not stop taking her in movies like other khans

Also juhi rejected super hits by the dozen not sure why?

https://www.koimoi.com/bollywood-news/juhi-chawla-once-revealed-aamir-khans-secret-marriage-with-two-kids-to-media-heres-what-happened-next/

Amir is very street smart guy refused his marraige for years and kids too wonder why? When hrithik and SRK can say they are married why hide? And even Juhi all knew she married in early 90s although she was acting than to yash birlas bro in law jay mehta. Even bhagyashree marraige was known before film release or divya bharatis. So why would heros hide their marraiges when actress are admitting. No wonder amir did not want to work with juhi as she keeps shooting from her mouth all truths

Taking a dig at the Laal Singh Chaddha actor, Juhi said, “Now, of course, Aamir has decided to become more honest like me and go clean about everything. After all, I am a very, very honest person and a staunch Gandhian when it suits me. I believe in the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth and I wish Aamir would do so too. Now please start searching for his two kids.”

I just looked it up because this seemed so unlike Juhi.

She got married in 1995. Her oldest daughter was born in 2001.

So she definitely didn't get a rushed marriage because she got pregnant 😆

I also saw an equally absurd claim. Apparently, Jai Mehta's first wife died in a plane crash. He started courting Juhi some time after. People apparently made comments equating that to Dharam Hema, Sri Boney, etc. Seriously? Marrying a widower is the same as having an affair with a married man? Strange people.

And yeah, people are allowed to have priorities.

As someone else pointed out, she lost her parents in quick succession before she got married. When something like that happens, your outlook on life changes. Family often becomes the most important thing your life.

None of it means she wasn't a good actor. Comedy ain't as easy as some actors can make it seem. You only have to see the likes of Kajol, Karishma, and Madhuri attempting comedy to understand how easy it is to cross into absurd territory. Juhi made it look natural. So did Tabu and Sridevi. Difference is Sri and Tabu were actually interested in their careers while Juhi's focus shifted. They expanded while Juhi didn't.

So I'd say she's underrated only as much as people underrate those lighter roles. When she did actually do heftier parts, she excelled.

And while her initial film choices seem ridiculous, missing Border wasn't a mistake. Very few remember the female leads in it. Nor did her competitors do any better (excluding Tabu who is in a league of her own). Oh, they tried. But Mrityudand actually exposed Madhuri's limitations. While Juhi's later choices revealed her capacity. Whether she did it in her late 20s or early 30s is immaterial.

She takes digs when she feels like it. I saw one on Amitabh some time ago. And on Kangana, which was crazy. Thankfully for Juhi, Kangana didn't seem to have noticed it. Juhi also called either Saif or Salman a *little* twit.

No wonder Juhi's star career only went so far 😆
