Amusing how out and out Amitabh films like Naseeb and AAA are being passed off as Rishi hits. Rishi himself admitted Amitabh was the biggest star and those films were about him. Even Shatru and Vinod overshadowed Rishi in AAA and Naseeb.

Chandni and Nagina are OUT and OUT Sridevi films. Even Amrish Puri as tantrik got more popularity than Rishi in Nagina.

Karz was a flop. It gained cult status many years later.

Hum Kisi se Kum Nahi was a hit but nowhere was Rishi comparable to top male superstars like Amitabh, Rajesh, Shatrughan, Vinod, Jeetendra or even Mithun, Anil in terms of hits and ability to carry films on his shoulders at BO.

When did Rishi do Khudgarz? Which Khudgarz you are talking of? The 80s hit is Shatru, Jeetu, Govinda film. No Rishi Kapoor there.

Rishi is called an A lister only due to hits he had as supporting sidekick with Amitabh Bachchan and heroine dominated films like Nagina, Chandni.

Even he knew what he was and admitted on KWK that his career was no great shakes but just on a certain 'level'.

Bobby made money due to Raj Kapoor using his influence to ensure more screens for it compared to Zanjeer, better music than Zanjeer and skin show by young Dimple. Rishi admitted Raj Kapoor bought him Filmfare award for best actor that year. Though fact is that Amitabh deserved it for Zanjeer and easily went on to overshadow Rishi Kapoor and reduce him to a sidekick.

Even a total newcomer like SRK overshadowed him in Deewana. Heroines have always dominated and overshadowed him as well which is seen in Yaarana, Prem Granth, Chandni, Nagina, Deewana, Ek Chadar Maili si, Yeh Vaada Raha or even Bobby where Dimple became a bigger craze thanks to her short skirts and bikini scenes. As a hero he rarely carried films on his shoulders as solo lead.

Nor managed to keep up with other stars or overshadow them in multi starrers. He should thank Amitabh for people still watching his old work with him otherwise no solo film of Rishi shows on TV except Bobby or heroine dominated films like Chandni, Nagina, Prem Granth, Yaarana.

In history of being overshadowed he even got overshadowed by Juhi in Bol Radha Bol, Kaarobar, Eena meena deeka. Vinod Khanna also dominated him again in Eena Meena Deeka.

As a star he never even had success like Shammi and Shashi as hero at BO. Let alone Raj Kapoor or real big stars of 70s and 80s like Amitabh, Vinod, Rajesh, Shatru, Dharam, Mithun, Jeetendra, Anil, Sunny, Sanjay.

I think his production or directorial venture? Aa Ab Laut Chalein also flopped.

Rishi is A lister only due to A list stars he worked with. Remove those Big B films from his career then see how many hits or memorable films he has.

BTW please keep to topic. I did not wish to discuss Kapoor khandaan or their status. I just wondered what was so special about Ranbir that so many top notch actresses fell for him or flaunted their love for him. That is it. I do not wish to deviate farther and farther from the topic.

I have watched many movies of his later years and I like him in them (didn't know his name)..

Also, haven't watched but had searched his younger age pictures but never connected the two😆!!

Now, that I know this is him in his younger age, I am finding a little bit similarities but I am still shocked!!

I do not know about psychopathy but ego may be there because Kapoor family is the most successful family in showbiz and even the kids who did not make it in films, later did theatre. They are a very well connected family and Prithviraj, Raj Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor used to be cultural ambassadors for GOI in past, often a part of cultural diplomacy for GOI. There was a time when whole industry would turn up at their one invite when senior Kapoor patriarchs were alive.

Everyone wanted to build legacy like them but no one matched them. Their hold over showbiz was almost like hold Gandhi-Nehru family had over politics in India.

Therefore the snobbery or ego or sense of elitism is natural.

Raj Kapoor's Holi parties, birthday parties used to have entire industry, including rivals in attendance. Such was his influence.

Ranbir is good-looking and talented. He is successful in his career and comes from a wealthy influential family. That itself makes people desirable.

He's cultivated a charming boy next door kind of personality. He doesn't claim to be a sanskari good boy nor does he claim to be a rebellious bad boy. It makes him seem more real and down to earth.

Finally, I think what makes him desirable is his confidence in his desirability.

Obviously, most of this is assumptions based on how he presents. I've never met him and don't know what he's really like. But I'm not surprised when people like him.

Nope. Zeenat popped in and out throughout the film. Call it a cameo if you will. Rishi's role was also an extended cameo. The film was made to promote the newcomers Tariq Khan(the director's nephew and Aamir Khan's cousin) and Kajal Kiran and Rishi and Zeenat lent some of their starry aura to promote the project.But your initial comment was that Rishi was not paired against Zeenat. Rishi was too much of a chocolate box hero to be cast against Hema. But they used it successfully in Ek Chadar Maili Si. He played a young layabout who is forcefully married to his older widowed sister-in-law Hema by the villagers.

The 70s belonged to Amitabh and it was the time of the multistarrers movies. Vinod Khanna, Jeetendra, Rishi Kapoor, uncle Shashi Kapoor all acted in each other's films all the time. They all understood the necessity to play second fiddle when necessary. I don't see why they should be mocked as B-listers for it. They have all given solo incredible performances that we need not doubt their talent. Rishi was cast with all the popular actresses of his time and achieved a measure of success. I appreciate his willingness to play the lead in scripts which favor the heroines. That's a failing which our current heroes must get over. If Rani had a solid A-lister hero playing her supportive husband in Mardaani, wouldn't it have been more bankable project?

It made no difference to Amitabh whether it was Dharam, Vinod, Shatru opposite him in any film. Amitabh has solo hits like Don, Zanjeer, Abhimaan, Satte pe Satta, Besharam etc. How many solo hits did Rishi have? Sunny Deol gave hits as solo hero in Ghayal, Ghatak, Betaab, Sohni Mahiwal, and did not just rely on Tridev, Ram Avtaar, Vishwatma type multi starrers at BO.

I agree that heroes earlier were less insecure and ready to work together or even in heroine dominated films like Sunny and Rajini starred in Chaalbaaz, Dharam and Sanjeev starred in Seeta Aur Geeta or Anil, Sanjay, Mithun, Jeetu, Govinda and Sunny did films together despite being rivals. Amitabh, Vinod, Shatru, Dharam were also rivals but worked together.

Shatru worked in Khoon bhari maang which is a Rekha vehicle but today it is unimaginable for a bankable star to star in heroine dominated films like Mardaani. Even Chhapaak got no A lister hero to star opposite Deepika.

Heroes today are way more insecure and neither work together nor work in films where heroine has meatier role nor like solid villains and supporting cast. Today's lot wants to dominate themselves and fear being overshadowed or compared to others. They would not even have done a Mr India where hero is invisible and villain has a grand role.

I can't believe you tagged Shashi together with Rishi as a B-lister. The man has been around since early 60s delivering solo hits like Jab Jab Phool Khile, Sharmeelee, Kanyadaan, Chor Machaye Shor long before Bachchan appeared on the scene. The sheer volume of his work(he did quite a lot of mediocre films) and the jodi he formed with Bachchan in the 70s don't take away his star value. Rishi can't aspire to Bachchan's towering success. But I don't think the Bachchan era is anything to aspire to. It's always better to have 3-4 heroes of similar star value rather than one lone tree stunting the growth of everyone else. Not that I believe Bachchan did it consciously. But script writers automatically wrote to favor his character at the expense of everyone else.

As for Rishi, he was quite a respectable choice in the 70s and 80s before he gained weight. He certainly wasn't classed together with Vinod Mehra, Anil Dhawan, Sanjay Khan etc.I'll agree that Sunny Deol was very generous to act in a Sridevi star vehicle and was very popular in the 80s. Rishi did better in his second phase once he stopped caring about his star status.

Agree 100%. The moment they can claim the coveted star status our heroes become insecure and refuse multi-starrers. It's not even about who gets the bigger pay-checks. Just simple ego.

The songs from Jab Jab Phool Khile are pretty good.
