SUICIDE - MOMENT OF CRISIS OR WEAKNESS? Trigger Warning; Reminder pg 2

Hello All... For once, I want to not discuss / defend the plots / character / actors or anything else but call for discussion based on a burning issue of suicide that was shown in today's episode! We are all real people and I am sure we have all heard of such instances... especially lockdown was heavy for many who left us thinking it was not worth it at all.

So today, we saw Raghav contemplating a dark move leading to self harm. And unfortunately its been assumed as emotional manipulation or moment of weakness.

Have we ever come in direct contact with fire and the pain that follows? Have we ever hurt ourselves accidentally and cried over the pain? If these instances are real, for once lets be sensitive to realise how much courage one would gather to immolate or hurt themselves to death? Its not weakness. Its agony of hopelessness.

Let me use an anecdote here... Two people are caught in the tide. The one who doesn't know to swim, drowns and the one who knows, makes his/her way to the shore. Now would you call the person who drowned, a coward or weak? No, right! The person's inability to swim through the tide doesn't make them weak instead they were caught in a situation they didn't know how to deal with. People drowning in the their sorrows is the same case. They lack the skill to swim the tide and thus collapse.

An entire classroom of students is exposed to same lesson, same teacher, same notes and same exam paper... yet, why is it that everyone doesn't score the same marks? Some people who study too hard, yet they fail and some who just brush through manage good grades.

Everyone's response mechanism is different. Everyone's phobia is different... Its like you have three people... one is hydrophobic, second is acrophobic and third is claustrophobic and we expect all three of them to react in the same way when exposed to water, heights or enclosed spaces! We can't and shouldn't expect two people to respond to life traumas in the exact same manner.

SUICIDE IS AN ACT FROM PAIN AND NOT WEAKNESS!

Suicide isn't a selfish choice. In fact it's a place where a person loses all hopes. Mental health practitioners have been warning about how depression can lead to people having suicidal thoughts. Its a dark dark place. And its a myth when people they want attention or they were weak or they were selfish.

I have seen what dark place means for people who are pushed into the spot devoid of light where they see no hope... It is the lack of understanding that they are pushed to gather all their strength one last time to end it all.

I have seen a 17 year old commit suicide because he didn't get support from the family... A have seen a 21 year old getting anxiety attacks because of a failed relationship. A 20 year old becoming a sex addict because she craved attention and love which her family failed to provide. A 50 year old man breaking down because he thought he was failing as a father. Everyone's issues are real and magnanimous for them, we are not in their position to judge them because we are not feeling what they feel. There is a reason why so many suicide helplines are established because they want to be heard and not judged. There are many people who raise a finger none to hold a hand. A little sensitivity is what may save a life.

Lets please remember, mental health issues are real and should neither be slighted nor brushed under the carpet.

So I'll genuinely urge two things:

1. Lets be the coastguard when sought... may be we will be able to keep a life afloat

2. Never give up. Another day is more beautiful than today. If you want to see the sunshine, you will have to stay afloat.

P.S. Mods if this doesn't fall into forum rules, you may please shut the thread.

Thank you for this post. Suicide is really death from depression. A pep talk won't help someone who is suicidal. No matter how open you are, how much love you give... ..they have to be able to feel it and reach for it.

Our mental health system is sh!t .

I believe the problem mainly lies in the lack understanding and acceptance in our society. System can work when people want them to work so the attitude has to change. We need to be more accepting than judgmental.

A very deep thought provoking post Soni. Loved reading this. Yes mental health is still a taboo in our society. It is high time we understand the causes of mental health and try to help the people instead of victim shaming them and mocking them.

Thanks Sharada

Very true. Many times it's the fear of being mocked at or the societal apathy that pushes people to stay locked inside their own heads.
