Part 21:
Imlie watched Aditya, seated at her knee with his arms resting on her. He was startled, but quickly recovered from the initial shock of her question.
Aditya, gravely: Are you trying to tell me something?
Imlie, calmly: I am only asking.
Aditya looked down, closed his eyes for a minute, struggling against the jealousy coursing through his veins. He looked up again.
Aditya, controlled: I would need to know if you still have feelings for her father and why you are not with him instead. But I wouldn't have any problems accepting her.
Imlie smiled widely and kissed him on the cheek: Right answer. Though you did have to think about it for a moment.
Aditya hesitated, his heart racing: Is she yours...and Alex's?
Imlie pulled his hair back playfully: No, she's not! I am offended. How can you even think that for a second (she glared at him in annoyance and matched their foreheads, the only one finding the whole thing adorable)? I never thought of anyone but you.
Now Aditya's blood reached boiling point. He pushed his hand away and sat back.
Aditya gritted his teeth: You just insinuated that to test my reaction?
Imlie, lightly: I wanted to know if you could accept my child like you wanted me to accept yours.
Aditya nearly shouted, but stopped himself when she flinched.
Aditya breathed in deeply: You said our marriage was over when you left, so I couldn't hold it against you if you were with someone. Question is if you want to be with me now.
Imlie pouted and leaned in to kiss his other chiseled cheek now: Always.
Aditya sighed: There is something you should know then. You did tell me we were over...
Trepidation caught Imlie's heart.
Imlie: Yes...?
Aditya: Well, it was a long time, ten years. And...
Imlie, in fear: And...
Aditya had this uneasy expression: It's not easy...
Imlie burst into tears: But you said you honored our marriage...
Aditya grabbed her arms: Of course, of course. I am not saying I married anyone.
Imlie, bawling: What are you saying then?
Aditya shrugged: None of it meant anything. I was only in love with you, but...it was just fun.
Imlie jumped him, but he anticipated her and stopped her from scratching his eyes out. She was on top of him struggling with all her might.
Aditya scoffed: You are a lot stronger now.
Imlie got off and retreated to the far end of the couch, curling up into a ball, crying and biting into her hands. Aditya approached and hovered over her, trapping her in. She would not look at him, she turned toward the couch.
Aditya: Tit for tat.
Imlie turned: What?
Aditya: I already told you I never looked at anyone else. But you fell for it.
Imlie took a swipe at him when he laughed.
Aditya, laughing: I told you not to play your tricks on me.
Imlie, angrily: That was not funny!
Aditya kept laughing when Imlie lunged for him again. This time he just sat back on the couch.
Aditya hugged Imlie close as she sputtered angrily and kissed her palm.
Aditya: You are incorrigible.
Imlie: And you are insane! Why would you do that!? I thought it was real.
Aditya: Why is it fair when you do it then?
Imlie: It is fair. I put up with you and her. I accepted your child. I wanted to know if you could accept mine the same way. It wasn't about Alex, it was about Emmy! And I miss her now, so I am going.
Aditya sighed: Well, you have your answer now.
Imlie snapped: Much good it did me too.
She stomped out, still angry.
Aditya called out: Where are you going? It's late. Don't disturb the baby.
He got up and followed Imlie into the hall. Imlie was plugging in her phone to Facetime Marie.
Aditya: It is way past her bedtime. Don't call. If you want to pick her up, I can come with you.
Imlie sighed and put down the phone: No, it's okay. It is late.
Aditya went up to Imlie and hugged her from behind: I still plan to seduce you.
Imlie, annoyed: Too late, you ruined the moment.
Aditya scoffed: I ruined the moment? You started it!
Imlie: And you finished it. Hope you are happy. I am going to bed. Thanks for dinner.
She tried to get out of his grip, but Aditya held on.
Imlie warned: I can break your arm now, if I want.
Aditya hugged her closer and kissed her collarbone: I know you can, but you won't.
Imlie: It won't work.
Aditya, softly: Then when will it work? Because I am done waiting.
Imlie: Then, marry me, officially.
Aditya sighed: Oh, is that it? How about tomorrow?
Imlie: It is not as easy as that.
Aditya: We will go to the French court and marry, what's so complicated about it?
Imlie: I want a religious marriage too. Again. With you happy in it for a change.
Aditya: Ah...okay. Let's do both tomorrow.
Imlie could feel the heat of his body against her back. He was so warm all over. Were men always this warm? She wanted to ask, but thought better of it.
Aditya let go: Can I use my credit card tomorrow?
Imlie: Not allowed. Phone and anything traceable stays with us.
Aditya: I want to do it all right for you. I need to buy the right singar. May I withdraw money?
Imlie: Nope.
Aditya was chest-fallen: But how are we supposed to get married then?
Imlie, smiled: I have the rings and mangal sutra already.
Aditya: No, I want to do it all properly. Again. And you need a better mangal sutra.
Imlie looked at her bracelet, made of the plastic beads from her village and the modest one Aditya had replaced them with in the hurry of trying to get acceptance in the family.
Imlie: These have memories for me.
Aditya: Not good ones. If you want me to be in a happy mood and do it over. Then, we need to restart with a new necklace and rings too.
Imlie: It can wait.
Her hands crept up to his collar. Aditya looked down, confused.
Imlie: It's the only day the baby is not here.
Aditya smirked: How mumsy of you.
Imlie: Hum hai mumsy! Kya kare?
Aditya: You don't want a special wedding night?
Imlie, shyly: I keep thinking, every time we waited, something went wrong...
Aditya picked her up: I don't need more encouragement than that.
Aditya lay Imlie down on his bed. Imlie pulled him down by the neck of his collar. He was a bit startled by her courage, but said nothing. They sank into a deep kiss, memorizing each other in a new way.
Imlie: I hope you like flannel penguin pajamas.
Aditya, breathed: Jhalli...
As Imlie helped him out of his shirt, a horrifying image of Malini Didi with him made her freeze.
Aditya saw the change in her eyes and was immediately filled with regret: I know what you are thinking.
Imlie wiped a tear: I will get over it.
Aditya looked at her sideways: I never wanted her like I want you. If I could undo it all, I would.
Imlie nodded, wiping away more tears: I am sorry.
Aditya hugged her: No, I am sorry. When I think of what I put you through with that mock wedding, I can't face my own reflection.
Imlie nodded against his shoulder as he held her. He felt the warm tears trailing down his back, searing through his skin.
Aditya asked the question he most feared: Are you sure you want to be with me?
Imlie whispered: You are the only one for me.
Aditya cupped her face: And you are the only one for me. You have been these past 11 years and you will be for as long as I live.
Imlie looked at him innocently: How do I overcome this?
Aditya kissed her: Make me yours and yours alone.
Many apologies were followed by many promises.
This is a short one. I wanted it to be only about them. What did you think?
