Why do I get the feeling that Alex may turn negative just like Malini - why else suddenly add him retrospect in a bar? Can't wait.

I am doing a total flip. If Aditya can expect her to accept his child, he should be able to accept her child too. I want to write more romance but hard to do without getting mature. I want the story to be accessible to everyone, even the young ones.

Hey Mary,

This is going really good. also, seems like Emmaline is Imlie's biological child (IVF) right with Alex. seems so; it will actually look more good like that When Adi has to really accept Emmaline as his daughter. I also want Ts to accept her and her daughter in their lives happily. Adilie deserve it.

Infact you are managing the story quite well. all the very best.

👏🥳

Aditya was bored. It has been 1.5 hours and Imlie was still taking her sweet time with dinner and talking nonsense. He playfully took a good couple of strands of her long hair and started braiding the ends of it.

Aditya: Why do I get the sense that you are prolonging dinner?

Imlie laughed: HA! Not at all, I am just enjoying all this delicious food. You went from kitchen mayhem to a real chef.

Aditya gave her that close-lipped irritated look: Right.

Imlie lost her smile. She doddled around the plate with her dessert.

Aditya stopped her playing football with the last ladoo and popped it in his mouth.

Imlie: I was going to eat that!

Aditya: I finished it off your plate. Now you will live longer.

Imlie's eyes widened: You remember?

Aditya: I remember everything. Now, finish up. I have a surprise for you.

Imlie watched in trepidation as he got off the table and went into the living room. What was he planning to do? She wasn't ready to jump into all this...

Aditya called out: Leave the dishes and come here.

He waited patiently another 10 minutes before irritation got to him.

Aditya: IMLIE!

Imlie quickly walked over.

He smiled, looking at her still in her flannel pajamas with little snowmen on it. He turned on the music and pulled her up by the waist.

Aditya: Let's dance.

Imlie: I am not properly dressed!

Aditya: So what? We are just at home. Let's be spontaneous.

Imlie smiled.

Aditya: Are you nervous?

Imlie, laughing nervously: Why should I be nervous? I have trekked the Siberian tundra at night alone. I am not afraid of anything.

Aditya pulled her right up against him: I can't help but feel like you are nervous though...

Imlie's eyes glinted as she looked at him: I am not!

Aditya smiled: I think you got spooked by the word.

Imlie forced nonchalance in her voice: What word?

Aditya whispered in her ear: You know exactly what word.

Imlie had too many sensations running all over her body from having him this close to her. She had never had him this close for this long.

Imlie giggled.

Aditya: What's so funny?

Imlie: I just keep thinking Malini Didi will pop up anytime now. I have never had a moment alone with you like this.

Aditya turned her around slowly: Never again (he kissed the top of her head).

Imlie wrapped her arms around him and hugged him instead. They slowly moved to her playlist.

Imlie just stayed with her head against his heart: I love this song.

Aditya: Thousand Years? It's a bit young.

Imlie: We are young.

Aditya: Speak for yourself. I am practically middle aged now.

Imlie: You are all of 42. Hardly middle aged.

Aditya: Someone has been counting.

Imlie picked an imaginary lint off his shirt: I celebrated all your birthdays.

Aditya was quiet for a bit: Really?

Imlie nodded. He liked the feel of her head against his chest.

Aditya: Why didn't you find me? Weren't you ever curious at least?

Imlie: Of course I was, but I thought you had a family and I couldn't stand finding that information.

Aditya sighed: We lost so much time.

Imlie: I know you blame me.

Aditya: I don't blame you. I blame takdeer.

Imlie hugged him tighter: Takdeer helped us meet again.

Aditya hugged her and rested his chin on her head: Aren't you glad I ran into that coup?

Imlie snapped up: No! That was reckless.

Aditya: Ow! (He pressed his chin)

Imlie: Sorry sorry sorry! I am no good at this romance thing.

Aditya smiled and tugged her back: You will do for me.

Alex got a hold of the bartender. Something strong, he said. He took the offered drink with shaky hands.

Bartender: Are you sure you should be drinking that?

Alex tipped generously: This is my first drink, mate. Let me have it.

Alex sighed into his drink thinking of Imlie and Aditya alone. They had Emmy picked up by his mother. He knew what that probably meant - their time alone.

"She was never yours. What is not yours cannot be lost..." he whispered to himself.

A young woman scooted closer to him at the bar and smiled. Alex knew what that was about.

Alex: What is your name?

The young woman replied: Emily.

Alex groaned and left the bar.

Imlie looked up at Aditya, suddenly serious: You understand, I can never go back?

Aditya: Back to being together or back to India?

Imlie: I live undercover, I have responsibilities here. I can't go back to India and live as Imlie. I cannot ever come out now that I am working for RAW. That's the deal I made when I accepted this role.

Aditya: Did you want to be done with your old life so badly?

Imlie sighed: Yes. There wasn't much in it for me. My society weighed my worth by my illegitimacy, both as daughter and wife.

Aditya, stunned: You were not illegitimate as my wife. We had a religious marriage. We were going to register it before Malini stooped that low.

Imlie sat down: Yes, but it didn't happen. My life there was very empty after that, Babusaheb... (at his pointed look, she corrected herself) Aditya. I did not want that identity anymore. I wanted a new one and this position offered me a new life. Now, I am an agent, a mother, a friend, and while I do go back to see my family, I don't think I can go back and be bahu in your home. Do you see that?

Aditya: I do. Even I don't live there anymore.

Imlie: How will we make it work if we have such different lives?

Aditya: I will build a life here, if you will have me. If I cannot go back to journalism, I can restart here.

Imlie: But your family needs you. I hope you make amends with your mother and the rest of your family, Aditya. I don't want to be the reason you lose all that.

Aditya: You are not responsible for that. Don't let my mother and Chachi's words haunt you. I chose to distance myself. If they can alter their views, I will visit, but it will just be like moving abroad.

Imlie: They will never accept me. And it's complicated. If they find out you are here with me, Nishant bhaiyya will have confirmation that I am a secret operative.

Aditya: We will talk to him. He understands how this works. Do you have any other qualms about why we might not work?

Imlie nodded: I have a daughter now. Your family will think she's some illegitimate child of mine with Alex no matter how much we clarify.

Aditya: I think it will be a good lesson for them. I remember you telling me they would never be okay with accepting your child with someone else even if they expected you to accept mine. They wanted you to be a second mother to Malini's child, I will be a second father to Emmy instead. How is this any different?

Imlie, concerned: And would you be able to be a father to her, knowing that Alex is also present as her guardian?

Aditya: If you could do it for me, I can do it for you. And it is easier for me given that she's adopted.

Imlie: What if she was not?

Cliffhanger!!!! Omg what's it supposed to mean?

Part 21:

Imlie watched Aditya, seated at her knee with his arms resting on her. He was startled, but quickly recovered from the initial shock of her question.

Aditya, gravely: Are you trying to tell me something?

Imlie, calmly: I am only asking.

Aditya looked down, closed his eyes for a minute, struggling against the jealousy coursing through his veins. He looked up again.

Aditya, controlled: I would need to know if you still have feelings for her father and why you are not with him instead. But I wouldn't have any problems accepting her.

Imlie smiled widely and kissed him on the cheek: Right answer. Though you did have to think about it for a moment.

Aditya hesitated, his heart racing: Is she yours...and Alex's?

Imlie pulled his hair back playfully: No, she's not! I am offended. How can you even think that for a second (she glared at him in annoyance and matched their foreheads, the only one finding the whole thing adorable)? I never thought of anyone but you.

Now Aditya's blood reached boiling point. He pushed his hand away and sat back.

Aditya gritted his teeth: You just insinuated that to test my reaction?

Imlie, lightly: I wanted to know if you could accept my child like you wanted me to accept yours.

Aditya nearly shouted, but stopped himself when she flinched.

Aditya breathed in deeply: You said our marriage was over when you left, so I couldn't hold it against you if you were with someone. Question is if you want to be with me now.

Imlie pouted and leaned in to kiss his other chiseled cheek now: Always.

Aditya sighed: There is something you should know then. You did tell me we were over...

Trepidation caught Imlie's heart.

Imlie: Yes...?

Aditya: Well, it was a long time, ten years. And...

Imlie, in fear: And...

Aditya had this uneasy expression: It's not easy...

Imlie burst into tears: But you said you honored our marriage...

Aditya grabbed her arms: Of course, of course. I am not saying I married anyone.

Imlie, bawling: What are you saying then?

Aditya shrugged: None of it meant anything. I was only in love with you, but...it was just fun.

Imlie jumped him, but he anticipated her and stopped her from scratching his eyes out. She was on top of him struggling with all her might.

Aditya scoffed: You are a lot stronger now.

Imlie got off and retreated to the far end of the couch, curling up into a ball, crying and biting into her hands. Aditya approached and hovered over her, trapping her in. She would not look at him, she turned toward the couch.

Aditya: Tit for tat.

Imlie turned: What?

Aditya: I already told you I never looked at anyone else. But you fell for it.

Imlie took a swipe at him when he laughed.

Aditya, laughing: I told you not to play your tricks on me.

Imlie, angrily: That was not funny!

Aditya kept laughing when Imlie lunged for him again. This time he just sat back on the couch.

Aditya hugged Imlie close as she sputtered angrily and kissed her palm.

Aditya: You are incorrigible.

Imlie: And you are insane! Why would you do that!? I thought it was real.

Aditya: Why is it fair when you do it then?

Imlie: It is fair. I put up with you and her. I accepted your child. I wanted to know if you could accept mine the same way. It wasn't about Alex, it was about Emmy! And I miss her now, so I am going.

Aditya sighed: Well, you have your answer now.

Imlie snapped: Much good it did me too.

She stomped out, still angry.

Aditya called out: Where are you going? It's late. Don't disturb the baby.

He got up and followed Imlie into the hall. Imlie was plugging in her phone to Facetime Marie.

Aditya: It is way past her bedtime. Don't call. If you want to pick her up, I can come with you.

Imlie sighed and put down the phone: No, it's okay. It is late.

Aditya went up to Imlie and hugged her from behind: I still plan to seduce you.

Imlie, annoyed: Too late, you ruined the moment.

Aditya scoffed: I ruined the moment? You started it!

Imlie: And you finished it. Hope you are happy. I am going to bed. Thanks for dinner.

She tried to get out of his grip, but Aditya held on.

Imlie warned: I can break your arm now, if I want.

Aditya hugged her closer and kissed her collarbone: I know you can, but you won't.

Imlie: It won't work.

Aditya, softly: Then when will it work? Because I am done waiting.

Imlie: Then, marry me, officially.

Aditya sighed: Oh, is that it? How about tomorrow?

Imlie: It is not as easy as that.

Aditya: We will go to the French court and marry, what's so complicated about it?

Imlie: I want a religious marriage too. Again. With you happy in it for a change.

Aditya: Ah...okay. Let's do both tomorrow.

Imlie could feel the heat of his body against her back. He was so warm all over. Were men always this warm? She wanted to ask, but thought better of it.

Aditya let go: Can I use my credit card tomorrow?

Imlie: Not allowed. Phone and anything traceable stays with us.

Aditya: I want to do it all right for you. I need to buy the right singar. May I withdraw money?

Imlie: Nope.

Aditya was chest-fallen: But how are we supposed to get married then?

Imlie, smiled: I have the rings and mangal sutra already.

Aditya: No, I want to do it all properly. Again. And you need a better mangal sutra.

Imlie looked at her bracelet, made of the plastic beads from her village and the modest one Aditya had replaced them with in the hurry of trying to get acceptance in the family.

Imlie: These have memories for me.

Aditya: Not good ones. If you want me to be in a happy mood and do it over. Then, we need to restart with a new necklace and rings too.

Imlie: It can wait.

Her hands crept up to his collar. Aditya looked down, confused.

Imlie: It's the only day the baby is not here.

Aditya smirked: How mumsy of you.

Imlie: Hum hai mumsy! Kya kare?

Aditya: You don't want a special wedding night?

Imlie, shyly: I keep thinking, every time we waited, something went wrong...

Aditya picked her up: I don't need more encouragement than that.

Aditya lay Imlie down on his bed. Imlie pulled him down by the neck of his collar. He was a bit startled by her courage, but said nothing. They sank into a deep kiss, memorizing each other in a new way.

Imlie: I hope you like flannel penguin pajamas.

Aditya, breathed: Jhalli...

As Imlie helped him out of his shirt, a horrifying image of Malini Didi with him made her freeze.

Aditya saw the change in her eyes and was immediately filled with regret: I know what you are thinking.

Imlie wiped a tear: I will get over it.

Aditya looked at her sideways: I never wanted her like I want you. If I could undo it all, I would.

Imlie nodded, wiping away more tears: I am sorry.

Aditya hugged her: No, I am sorry. When I think of what I put you through with that mock wedding, I can't face my own reflection.

Imlie nodded against his shoulder as he held her. He felt the warm tears trailing down his back, searing through his skin.

Aditya asked the question he most feared: Are you sure you want to be with me?

Imlie whispered: You are the only one for me.

Aditya cupped her face: And you are the only one for me. You have been these past 11 years and you will be for as long as I live.

Imlie looked at him innocently: How do I overcome this?

Aditya kissed her: Make me yours and yours alone.

Many apologies were followed by many promises.

This is a short one. I wanted it to be only about them. What did you think?

Very nicely written... I loved the moment when she initially accepted but later froze...I can’t think of any better way to it.. it was so organic... such memories don’t fade so easily but their love will conquer all m sure 🤗

Loved it!! Always imagined Imlie getting flashes of MC during their moment and you just wrote that. It must have been painful for her. MC's doings still haunts her. Will be needing you more now as R*pist is back with her bacha and pagalpan.
