Chapter 38

And as soon as he finished praying his phone rang. It was like God answered his prayers. He quickly picked up and saw Anokhi's number on the missed call list. He smiled in relief while dialing her number back.

“Hello!” he heard her say quietly.

Too quietly.

Fear gripped his heart.

He started panicking as his mind conjured different scenarios about what could have happened after he left her place.

“What's wrong?? Are you okay?? Is everything alright?? Did something happen?? Did anyone say anything??” In a panicked tone he left her with many questions.

“No... I mean yes, I mean everything is fine. Nothing happened!!”

“Nothing?? Really??” Shaurya uttered in disbelief. “Wow!! Thank god, I was so scared.” Relief flooded his heart, making his whole body sag and relax.

“Hmm, me too….” She replied, feeling astonished.

“But, how is it possible that nothing happened?? And if nothing happened then why are you calling me so late??” Now he was totally confused.

“Actually, Mom and Di left a bit later than they were supposed to because their train was late and I didn't want to come to my room before they left. Didn't seem like a good idea” revealed Anokhi.

“Ohhh ok!! And what about your Grandma, what happened with her?? Did she say anything about me?? Did she ask you anything?? Anything at all?? She didn't say anything to your Mom, did she??” He anxiously enquired.

“I don't know… I really don’t know about her or understand anything….I'm truly confused. She didn't say anything to me in particular or to Mom for that matter but I felt like she wanted to. It seemed like she wasn't sure of what she saw, maybe that's why she kept quiet and didn't say anything. I honestly don't know.”

“Maybe you are right that she wasn't sure of what she saw….” Shaurya thought out loud.

“I guess so. We are okay….I think…..at least for now.” Anokhi comforted him.

“I really hope so Jaan. But it still worries me, it can become a problem in future as when we will talk to your family she might remember this and object.”

“Hmmm I didn't think about that….. I really wish she hadn't come up when she did” Anokhi uttered petulantly while closing her eyes in dismay.

Shaurya could sense the tension in her voice. He himself was worried but decided to cheer her up.

“Jaan don't worry so much. She didn't say anything today so maybe she won't say anything later too. If she wanted to say something she would have already said today, why would she wait?? There isn't any reason to wait…….at least I can't think of any reason for her to wait.” He tried to convince himself as well as her.

“I hope you are right. I hope she forgets this forever.”

Despite the fact that their day was full of worry, it helped divert their minds off of the painful upcoming separation. The worry of what could happen if their secret got revealed at this point of time didn't give them time to indulge in the thoughts of the sword currently hanging on their heads, a.k.a their separation.

Shaurya wanted to cheer her up, so he decided to change the topic. “Jaan, you know I found a way for you to call me free of cost and that too right from your house phone.”

“Really!! How??” Anokhi asked quickly in excitement.

Finally, after such a long and troublesome evening, a sweet smile adorned Shaurya’s lips hearing the sudden excitement in Anokhi’s voice.

‘I don't know what will happen in future but I'm glad I was able to cheer her up right now and I wish I am able to do it in future as well.’

“Hello!! Are you still there??” Anokhi whispered when she didn't receive any answer from him.

Hearing her voice brought him out of his thoughts. “Yes, I'm here I'm here…” he quickly spoke.

“Why aren't you saying anything then?? Tell me how I can call you from home??”

“Nothing, I was just thinking about something. Anyway, remember I told you that Vipul was checking on the calling cards??”

“Yes!”

“Well, he called today and explained to me how it works. The calling card company has an access number which you have to dial first, then it will ask you to dial the card number and then my number.”

“So many numbers?? How will I remember them??”

“Access number and my number will always be the same but each card will have a different number, so you will need….”

“But, where will I get the card from?? And where will I keep them??” She asked, panicking. ‘I'll need to arrange money to buy them as well’ she thought.

“Hey stop panicking and just listen first. I have everything figured out, don't worry.”

“Ooookkaaayy.”

“So the plan is that I will leave some money with Vipul, he will buy the cards and email all the numbers to me and I will email them to you. All you have to do is note those numbers and use them from home only, no need to go out to make an ISD call. Whenever you get a chance to talk, just call me and tell me and I'll call you back. This way you can use each card for a few days.”

“Okay, that's great!”

“And the best part of using these cards is that you don't pay anything, nothing at all. These calls are free of cost as you already paid for the card. This way there won't be any charge on your phone bill also, as nothing will show up in the bill. No one will know anything.”

“Really?? Wow, That's amazing!!”

“Yes, it's perfectly safe and the easiest way to keep in touch. I'm really glad Vipul came up with this option. Otherwise I was wondering what we will do, because what if I called and someone else picked up?? Or if someone is near you!! How would I know when is the right time to call you?? And how would you have called if you wanted to?? Or if sometimes no one is around and you can freely talk but you have no way of informing me about it. All these questions were driving me crazy but Vipul gave us a wonderful solution. It makes me feel relieved knowing that you can call me whenever you want, at your convenience and right from the safety of your home, without even having to step one foot out.”

Anokhi had a bright smile hearing everything. As he voiced his fears she realized she wasn't the only one worried about these things, he was too. Each and every gesture or care he showed towards her, be it small or big, it always made her feel so super happy. Her vision blurred as her eyes filled with happy tears, she felt she was truly blessed having him as a part of her life.

“Jaan”

“Hmm”

“Are you okay??”

“Yeeeaaahhh, why??”

“Uhhh...You sound a bit gloomy. Well, I know why you are gloomy but I don't want you to be, how will I be able to go and survive there?? Please don't be sad, I'll be back very soon to take you with me. I promise.” He pleaded.

Even though he himself was sad, he still couldn't bear to see her sad.

“I know and I'm not sad.” She tried to convince him. “I will wait for you, don't worry about me I'm fine.” She cheerfully replied.

He wasn't convinced and knew very well how she must be feeling as he himself was in the same situation, but he decided to change the topic for now.

“By the way Jaan, that Rasmalai that I had at your house was really very yummy.” He said while smiling mischievously and imagining her confused face.

“Rasmalai?? What Rasmalai?? When did we eat Rasmalai??” She asked, scrunching her nose in confusion.

“That special Rasmalai that is only….”

“Special Rasmalai!! What are you talking about??”

“I will tell you if you’d let me talk.” He teased.

“Sorry!” she said while pouting.

“Hmmm so about the Rasmalai…...well, it was very sweet, tasty, one of a kind, oh and it's only and only for me to have. But I'll have to wait a long time before I can have it again.”

“What is this, a puzzle?? And why would you need to wait?? I'm sure you can find Rasmalai anywhere, even in the USA.” Anokhi innocently said.

Shaurya smiled at her innocent reply and mischievously told her “Not this one Jaan. I can only have this when you are with me.”

‘Huh! What's he talking about?? What Rasmalai?? When did I….’ Suddenly a bulb lit in her mind and she realized what he was talking about and started blushing furiously and words just slipped out of her mouth “Oh... my... god” but as soon as she realized what she had acknowledged, she covered her mouth with her hand.

Shaurya laughed out loud as she went quiet knowing well that she had realized what he was referring to. But soon he stopped laughing and spoke in a serious tone “Though on a serious note, I want to ask you something.”

“What??” With a prompt response Anokhi worriedly questioned.

“Well, if I…..actually first you promise me that you will reply truly and won't hide anything.” Shaurya said in a very serious tone.

“Ohhkay I will.” She said feeling a bit unsure thinking what the matter is and then almost impatiently asked “But what is it, I am confused??”

“Uhhh did my moustache prick you today also??”

“Ya, a little bit” As always she answered promptly and innocently without even realizing.

“What??” Suddenly realizing what the question was, she shouted in shock and wondered why he made such a big deal about it!! Then with hesitation she fumbled “Ahh aaa .... That was your question???” She questioned embarrassedly in a dim tone.

Shaurya laughed out loud. “I love it when you answer spontaneously and without hesitation.”

“You enjoy teasing me, don't you?? No no Actually, you do enjoy teasing me a bit too much, I get it now.” Anokhi said in an amused tone while grinning and shaking her head at his mischievousness.

“Yes, you are right. I do enjoy teasing you. Though I really do have a serious question to ask you. May I??" He sincerely asked.

"Ya right. You really think I'll get trapped in the same trap and let you make fun of me again?? No way....forget it....I'm not listening!!”

“No no this time I seriously want to ask you something. Actually, scratch that, I need your opinion on something. Please help me.” He tried to make her listen.

“Ok fine, what is it??” She replied while still sulking.

“Hey don't be like that Jaan…..I won't make fun of you anymore, Okay??”

“Okay!”

“Now my question!! I was thinking about shaving my mustache, what do you think??”

“You what??” She asked in astonishment.

“Uhhh you don't like it, right??”

“But you do, because you've had it for as long as I've known you!!”

“Ya but I can shave it, it's not a big deal. You don't mind, do you??” He asked, taken aback at her reaction.

“You want to do it for me?? Only because I don't like it??” She asked, surprised.

“Yes Jaan, I can do anything for you….this is nothing. Don't think so much about it.” He casually spoke.

“Wow. I wonder how you would look without the mustache.” She thought excitedly. “But when will I get to see you like that??” She asked disappointedly.

“Don't worry, I'll send you a picture right after shaving it. Okay?”

“Yes, I can't wait. It will be so much better not getting tickled when you ki….” she suddenly stopped feeling shy as she realized what she was saying.

Shaurya laughed out loud and teasingly said “Finish your sentence, why did you stop??”

“You already know what I was gonna say, so no need to finish it..…” Anokhi whispered and giggled shyly.

“Hmmm that's true, although knowing is good but hearing you say it would be way better than knowing.” He replied dreamily.

“What are your plans for the whole day tomorrow?? What time is your sister’s family coming?? When will you talk to me?? Actually, will you even get a chance to talk to me while everyone is there??” She spoke it all in one go, bringing Shaurya out of his dreamland.

“Slow down, slow down my bullet train….. breathe... you need to breathe while talking Jaan.”

“Ooohhhkkkaaayyyy. What……….are……..your……..plans……...for……...tomorrow???” She deliberately paused between each word and then sweetly asked “Better??”

He laughed before saying “Yes, much better.” Then they both laughed.

“Okay, now to answer your questions. Well, Di will come with her kids around 11am or so I think. We will do final packing after adding homemade sweets and namkeens she is bringing for me and then we'll all have lunch together, Jiju will come after work around dinner time I guess. Also Vipul will come in the evening too, he will take me to meet Uncle Aunty and Bhabhi and then he said he will also come to the airport with me along with everyone else.”

“Wow everyone is coming to the airport to see you off…..wish I could come too.” She dimly murmured.

“Next time you will be at the airport too Jaan….though not to see me off but to fly with me to OUR house.” He lovingly told her in a confident tone.

“You promise??” Anokhi excitedly asked.

“Of course I promise.” He smiled hearing her excitement.

“Ok so this means you'll be very busy all day tomorrow. There won't be anyone at home tomorrow but you won't have time to talk to me.” She pouted.

“It's our luck that no one will be there at your place tomorrow, this means I can call you whenever I get a chance without any worry and definitely no need to wait till night like everyday. I will call you throughout the day Jaan, even though they'll be short calls but very frequent for sure.”

“Really?? You will call me??”

“Yes Jaan, I want to talk as much as possible too.”

“I love you!!” She whispered lovingly.

He smiled happily and replied “I love you too Jaan!!” It made him extremely happy every time he heard those wonderful words from her but when she took the initiative and said them on her own without any coaxing from his side they sounded even more beautiful.

They kept talking the whole night. This was their last night where they could enjoy the whole night talking to each other. It will be very difficult, not to mention expensive, to talk like this once they are in different countries. Each and every second of that night was very precious for them, all the memories they created during these nights will be their biggest support and strength when they'll be away from each other. They had collected a lot of memories during their nightly phone calls and their talks.

It was amazing how these phone calls slowly brought them closer and closer. How they started calling each other with silly excuses so they could just hear the other’s voice. How they looked forward to these calls every evening and just like that one night Shaurya proposed to Anokhi. It was the most memorable moment for them.

If anybody had told them before that day or even that morning that tonight they will confess their feelings for each other they wouldn't have believed them, in fact they'd have laughed at them or called them crazy for saying such an impossible thing. But, even the seemingly impossible thing happens sometimes, destiny makes it happen. It was in their destiny to love each other, be with each other and be each other's for forever. They both believed in destiny and believed that God will make things possible for them, he will always help them….just like he did till now. He will have the biggest hand in shaping their joint future. They had Hope.

Hope of being together in the future.

Hope of receiving both their families' blessings.

Hope of everything working out for them.

Hope of having a life together.

Hope of making a home together.

Hope of having their HAPPILY EVER AFTER.

Last day in India

As per plan, Shaurya’s sister along with her kids arrived in the morning around 11:30 am. Then she helped him pack the homemade sweets she brought and many more little things which Shaurya didn’t even think about. He inhaled deeply while looking at his sister who was futilely trying to hide her overwhelming emotions, he slightly smiled at how lovingly she was instructing him while packing each and every item with so much care.

Throughout the day he had people coming and going in the house, everyone wanted to meet him and wish him luck before he left…..all the relatives, friends, neighbors. He also received many phone calls not only from his colleagues but students as well. All in all his house was full of people and the phone was ringing off the hook as well. Even though he was busy as hell he still managed to call Anokhi every now and then…..even if it was for only a few minutes, he didn’t wanna miss a single opportunity to talk with Anokhi. He gave her every single detail about how his day was going.

During one of the phone calls

Shaurya casually informed Anokhi, “You know Jaan Didi has been bugging me all day about wanting to talk to you and see…”

“What!!!! Talk to me?? Why?? I...I….but...but what does she want to say to me???” Anokhi instantly felt panicked and scared.

“Don't panic….you didn't let me finish what I was saying. I already told her now is not the right time for it. But then she wanted to see your picture. And you know what the funniest part was, she was blackmailing me emotionally.” he laughed remembering it.

Anokhi relaxed a bit hearing him laugh and amusingly asked “What do you mean by she was blackmailing you?? What did she say??”

“After I denied her demand to let her talk with you on phone, she started making a sad face while pouting and said ‘I am your sweet... loving… dear… one and only sister, you will do like this with me?? You will make your elder sister beg you for such a small thing?? Brothers and Sisters don’t have any secrets between them. Anyway, it’s a matter of a second, such an easy task for you and yet you are torturing me like this. Not only are you torturing me for this, you are also leaving me.’ Shaurya barely stopped laughing and imitated his sister.

“You know she is such a drama queen and also so cute, even at this age.”

Anokhi also giggled hearing him imitate and curiously questioned “What did you do then??”

FLASHBACK

“If I can't talk to her, at least show me her picture. You can't just tell me about her and leave the country without even showing me a picture of her.” A hint of sadness was clearly visible in her eyes but she still demanded stubbornly.

“But, how do I show you a picture of her when I don't have any??” With a straight face he informed her innocently, while smiling inwardly. Though he couldn't keep his face straight for long and chuckled mischievously seeing her open mouthed shocked face.

As soon as she saw him laughing, she understood he was joking. She slapped him on his arm “Don't joke around!! I got scared thinking how you will survive and stay away from her without even a picture.”

Hearing her reminded him once again of their current situation and his face fell. “You think having a picture will help?? I don’t need to see a picture of her to survive. I just need to close my eyes and her innocent smiling face is right in front of me. Di, even I don't know how I will survive.”

Seeing him lost in thoughts and his sad face made his sister feel guilty for stating the obvious. She tried to cheer him up “Hey, don't worry!! Everything will be fine, she'll be with you soon.” With that she hugged him and patted his back caringly.

Then she changed her tone back to teasing and held his ear in mock scolding, “Enough of your nautanki. Now we are not going to change the topic mister, believe me I won’t let you leave India without showing her picture to me. So you better be quick, especially before Bhabhi comes back.”

“Okay okay, I'm showing I'm showing…..at least now spare my poor ear.” He rubbed his ear and they both laughed while he pulled his wallet out to show her the pic.

“You know what Didi, leave it….no need to see this…” He kept his wallet back with a teasing grin.

“Shaurya….” she yelled in frustration. “Enough…. Stop messing around and show me her picture.”

“When did I say I'm not showing the picture??” Shaurya innocently asked.

“Give me your wallet then.” Her voice was laced with excitement and eagerness.

“Ohhh now I get it. No I'm not giving you my wallet because…”

“What?? Why??” She whined.

“Offo Didi, you must let me finish my sentence….. so as I was saying... I'm not giving you my wallet because I am going to show you a bigger size picture of her instead of that small wallet size picture.”

“Ohhhh….what are you waiting for then, be quick!!”

Finally, he opened his carry on luggage…. then from the inside hidden pocket took out the pictures and gave them to his sister to see. He smiled and remembered how he had asked her and brought the photos with him for a day so he could get them copied for himself. These were the same pictures he saw in her house and she had once brought to school to show him.

“Wow.” He came out of his thinking hearing his sister’s amazed tone. He looked at her and noticed how she was staring at her pictures with awww. Then she turned towards him and spoke with excitement “She is so beautiful, looks so innocent and she also has long hair just the way you like. I'm so happy for you. You two will look amazing together. I can't wait to meet her in person.”

Shaurya grinned widely at her and hugged her gratefully for being on his side. “Thanks Didi!”
