I feel Adi is in the last feet of letting go of Imlie. He knows that he has royally screwed and he can never ever have a normal married life with Imlie. The only thing he is not able to do is

Let go of Imlie by himself. If she leaves him at this point, he is okay with that and he will take it as a punishment and will deal with his life. Now the ball is on Imlie’s court. Imlie also deep down knows that her position in his life is questionable now. She is also not able to let him go completely, because of the deep love and concern she has for him. Finally the circumstances at some point will force any one of them will make them to take the tough decision which they hav postponed for a short while. As clearly, both of them deep down knows the relationship is no longer the same.
