Chapter 69
Blood Moon (a)
Omen of imminent conflict masqueraded itself as a thick fog that slowly filled the streets and nature of Dehradun. Humans only saw it as unusual weather; the supernaturals on the other hand, something much more dangerous.
“It’s getting thicker, isn’t it? Even I’m having trouble seeing through it.” Mandu said, trying to capture the stars in her sight.
She and Piya sat in the gardens, the latter staying with them until she had to leave for Iolanda’s manor the next afternoon. Abhay and Siddharth, along with some others, went to survey the insides of the palace, a place where she had no intention of ever entering. It brought too many painful memories.
“Will it clear after? I’ve never seen fog this thick before.” Piya said, remembering the time Ayushmaan first cornered her. It wasn’t nearly this bad.
“It will. Eventually. I just hope....this fog is all we have to worry about.”
Her eyes felt damp, a trail of blood rushing down. The fog had unfortunate meaning and presence. Piya touched her shoulder, offering a handkerchief.
“Isn’t this Abhay’s?”
“Yeah, I keep meaning to return it but I also keep forgetting. I’m sure he won’t mind.”
She laughed, and pressed the cloth under her eyes.
“It’s basically yours now.”
Mandu kept it for the moment in her fist, and looked at Piya. She knew their story, and about her complicated relationship with Maithili. She too was curious, of how Piya saw things. A fresh pair of eyes, this girl was.
“Say Piya, you’ve seen a decent amount of our past. Can I....ask you something?”
“Sure. What is it?”
“Was I......a good sister?”
She gave Piya such a saddened look that it appeared she was trying not to cry further. Piya slumped her shoulders and gave her a hug.
“You would only ask that if you hold some kind of guilt. Trust me, I know the feeling. It’s not your fault.”
“I wish I could’ve gotten through to her, stopped her before it was too late. Maybe then I wouldn’t hate her so much.”
She stared at her hands, and tightened them into fists.
“You’re a great sister, daughter, mother, and leader to her people...” Piya continued.
“Now you’re just flattering me.” She murmured, in a pitiful laugh. “I can’t even step foot in my own home because I’m so afraid of it.”
“That doesn’t make you any less....”
Her lips quivered, and her fingers gripped Piya’s hand for a moment. She shook her head, took deep breaths, and laughed again. For Piya, it was hard seeing someone usually so cheerful, so saddened and burdened.
“Maithili had a great interest in botany and gardening. I’m not as good with plants as she was, but do you think she’d like this?”
The garden around the mansion was no less tha beautiful. Piya nodded.
“I think she would.”
She managed to smile a little, perhaps recalling some happier memories.
“By the way, I never mentioned anything about my lineage or Pandher. How did you first start reading on it?”
Piya’s hand pointed back on cue, like she was expecting to be questioned on the topic. Mandu furrowed her brow in confusion.
“In the study, I found a photo of you and Maithili. Her name was scratched out though.”
“What photo?”
Piya said nothing more and took her inside to the study, fixing the ladder against the bookcase and reaching over to retrieve the aged photograph. Mandu’s eyes lit up.
“Oh, of course. Mr. Berkshire shot this. First time I ever saw a working camera.”
The scratches underneath dulled her nostalgia, created by her nails long back, and she set the photo away deep under the box that kept it in place. She didn’t want to look at it anymore.
“I would’ve burned it, but I didn’t have the heart to. Emotions work in strange ways, don’t they?”
——————————————————————
It was the last night before the face of the moon colored red like blood. And facing the fog alone was terrifying in an event like this coming too soon. Curled up snug and safe in Abhay’s arms, after he returned, she tried to fight insomnia. He stroked her back, and created heat from his body again.
The tip of her nose wandered his bare chest, lips just lightly touching. Abhay made a sound and held her tighter.
“I would trade the world for more time like this...” he said.
Piya blushed. She had been spending the night with him more often in the past month, sometimes Abhay would stay at her place, or she at his. Another hard to break habit.
“What are you thinking, jaan?”
“Nothing...”
She was just worried, about what tomorrow night would bring. Separated from her guardian angel, in an different house and country. She wished she could go with him, but that would only cause more trouble. Mandu was vehemently against such an idea, scolding her after she suggested it during their conversation.
In the chaos in her mind, the scent of sandalwood and roses brought her comfort. It was peaceful.
“We’ll be okay. You don’t have to worry.”
She haplessly nodded and looked up, pressing her lips to his. Just one taste, to make sure she wouldn’t miss him that much. Abhay smirked against her lips and reciprocated, hands wandering under her top and all over her back.
The temporary heat from his lips felt strange. She liked the cold better.
“Don’t eat me....” she pouted, not expecting to lose her breath so quickly. He snapped his fangs at her, acting playful.
“Resisting is quite difficult, jaan....”
By the way he said it, she finally smiled, and started to laugh. Abhay ran his fingers through her hair and kissed her forehead.
“This smile should never disappear....” He whispered. Piya hid her face. “Are you having trouble falling asleep?”
“A little....”
Abhay nodded and laid her underneath him, then pressed himself atop just enough to provide her heat. His lips wandered her neck, wanting so badly to mark his claim there.
“I’d love to tire you out myself.....” he said, breathing heavily against her skin. Piya turned pink and covered his mouth.
“Not the best idea in a house of vampires. What if Siddharth and Mandu hear?”
“Taste of their own medicine....” he murmured. His fingers crawled under her top and wandered her belly. “I’ve been needing a new bed anyways. Seems like this one isn’t too comfortable for you.”
Piya reached for a pillow and shoved it in his face, then broke into a muffled giggle.
He set the pillow aside and trailed kissed up her neck, and at the last, underneath her jaw, he left a love bite.
“Don’t forget me.”
“I won’t. I promise.”
She didn’t know when she dozed off after making the promise. She’d have an even harder time sleeping tomorrow night without him nearby, without his scent lingering in the sheets.
Vulnerable without her guardian angel. Nothing could be more dangerous.
——————————————————————
The fog only got worse as dawn arrived. Weather advisories were plastered all over the local news channels, and those excited to witness the astronomical phenomena of a total lunar eclipse, were left disappointed that the event would be hard to see with human eyes. Piya recalled the astronomy club at college putting together a watch party, now cancelled after yesterday’s report. Ms. Julie called to tell her not to come in today, as classes were cancelled as well.
Abhay opened the door to the study, taking a moment to see Piya curled up on the floor in a corner, with piles of books surrounding her. She looked up and closed the novel in her hand. Iolanda was behind him.
“Good afternoon, Piya. It’s time to go.”
Another key was inserted into the basement door. She pushed it open, and gestured Piya forth. It was only one night, but she didn’t want to go. Abhay took her hand before she started to walk, and kissed it once.
I love you. Please be careful....
She turned back, hugged him as tight as she could, and passed through the invisible portal. On the other side, a heavily wooded plot, with no other signs of civilization around it. Outside the front gates, a girl with long jet black hair and stood waiting with her arms crossed, along with some other vampires. All stoic beings, just like how Abhay was before he warmed up to her.
“Yeona, this is Piya. The girl I am entrusting you too.”
Yeona didn’t say a word, but nodded firmly, and watched Piya closely. She had been strictly taught to keep their realities a secret from humans; it was awkward to meet one who didn’t need to be lied to.
Iolanda turned to Piya.
“Piya, you are stay inside these four walls until I return tomorrow morning. Wander all you want inside, but stay inside.”
“I will. Thank you.”
Yeona continued to remain silent, but politely led Piya inside herself after her creator departed once more. Piya knew she wasn’t the best at small talk, and looked around instead of speaking. Iolanda’s residence was much different than the First Family’s manor, more mellow and inviting.
“Like Iolanda said, you can look around, but stay out of sight. Myself and the others will do our best to keep you safe if anything happens.”
Yeona looked away immediately after she finished, and left closing the door behind her. Piya couldn’t even thank her, and assumed she was shy, or weirded out by talking to a human like nothing was amiss.
Her eyes felt like they would fall out of her head should she try to make detail out of the ceiling. It was that high up.
Being alone in a smaller house doesn’t seem so bad in comparison.
The doors and windows were tightly shut. Vampires circled the outer gates and boundary. All she could entertain herself with was the decor of the place, or outside nature through the glass. Arranged in a line on the large wall facing the staircase were portraits of each Duralis vampire Iolanda had created. Piya figured it out the arrangement easily, recognizing the portraits of Jovan, Abhay, and Yeona in the same order as they were turned in. At the center was Iolanda’s.
She touched the frame of Abhay’s. His seemed to be painted a long time ago, judging by the style of his clothing. The bottom of the frame had an engraving of his name and the year he was turned. 1720. She stared up at it for a while, already missing him.
Please stay safe.
There were definitely bats flying around outside, but she wasn’t sure if all of them were vampires or none at all. Besides the thumping of her own heart in the background, all she could hear were the voices in her head. Staying with Abhay every night had its own purpose, to keep her mind away from her past catching up to her. Even after a month, that one meeting tormented her. At least Sameer still didn’t know about it. He wouldn’t take it lightly.
She stepped out of the car, footsteps cautious. Her heart pounded in her ears, even Abhay’s voice couldn’t reach her.
Arnab ran up to her in joy, hands just moments away from caressing her cheeks and hugging her tight. He finally found his lost daughter. But Piya didn’t share the same sentiment. Her father was still missing. She let her tears fall and stuck out a palm, feet backtracking, before he could even touch her.
“Please....stay away from me.”
He should have expected this response. After all, if she wanted to reconcile, she wouldn’t have hidden the truth when he asked. Broken hopes only brought pain with them. Arnab’s shoulders went slack. Fingers curled inward, and that flicker of hope in his eyes slowly extinguished.
Denial and tears. He looked at her.
“Dear....what are you saying? Please hear me out. It’s been so long——“
“Too long. And too late. I don’t want to hear it.”
Abhay stood behind her, holding her hand, but letting her speak. He had nothing to say in this matter, but he didn’t want to leave her alone.
“I know, I made a very big mistake. One that doesn’t deserve forgiveness. But—-“
“But what, Mr. Dobriyal? What excuses will you make this time? You already know I won’t ever forgive you, and you still came here? Where were you when I needed you most?! When mumma needed you most?! Huh?!”
Her volume escalated. She squeezed Abhay’s hand, teeth clenched. The anger pent up towards her father finally erupted after so many years of churning violently in the recesses of her heart. She wailed, and continued to shout. The most damning finger was pointed at the face she hated so much.
“She wanted to see you before......before her time was up. Where were you?”
He didn’t have a good answer for her.
“I—-“
“I know. You were here, with your other family.”
13 years ago, Sugandh found out the truth, and tearfully separated herself from Arnab with a stone over her heart. But she could push him completely out of her heart. And Piya was left wondering.
“You didn’t care. You never did.”
“Piya, it’s not like that—-“
“Please, leave. Before I say anything that I shouldn’t.”
She ran out of words and vitriol to throw at him. Abhay stepped forward, and sternly requested he leave. For once, Arnab didn’t try and argue. He was just as broken, and ashamed.
The tears from then came back. She wiped them, and felt her stomach rumble. Abhay would surely scold her for not eating properly. She wandered towards the kitchen. It was mostly empty, aside from a few snacks to hold her over until the next day. She didn’t feel that hungry anyways.
