Chapter 2

// Lagom //

[ not to little, not too much, just right ]

Rishita spent an eventful day at Pandya house. Although she had gone there to get to know them better, she found herself more and more focused on Raavi and Shiva. She tried not to appear intrusive, but sometimes when she looked at them both, It seemed as if they existed only in their bubble. Even when they were just looking at each other, it seemed as if she was looking on at something intimate. She was struck by how in sync they were even when they weren't next to each other, they essentially acted like an old married couple, they quarrelled and then made up - and their fights were cute for a lack of a better word, it was like they found reasons to argue and then makeup. Although they were interacting with the rest of them, she could tell that they were still hyperaware of the other, irrespective of whether or not they were sitting by each other. She first took notice of this aspect of their relationship when they all sat down to discuss the house plan.

Raavi was the one who was supervising the entire construction for the house since she was the head architect.

“Okay, so since we want to preserve the aangan, I think we can work around it to include space for other rooms. Kitchen ka space already hai, toh we just need to think about a living room and a dining room. Abhi Ghar ke layout ke mutabik, Maa ke room ke pass washroom hai, toh I think washroom aur Maa ke room ko combine karna accha hoga, phir kitchen ke paas toh storeroom hai, hum undono combine karke kitchen and dining room banasakthe hain. Aur rahi baat Gaumbi aur Bhabhi ke room ki, hum uss room ko ek guest room ke taur pe use karsakthe hai. Phir baaki sab ke rooms upar bana sakthe hai” Raavi said

“Idea accha hai Raavi, par mujhe na, ek home-office ya ek study room jaisa Kuch chahiye, usska kya?” Gaumbi asked

“Toh ek kaam karenge, hum 2-floor badhaneki soch rahe hai Gaumbi, aur har ek floor pe 5 rooms ki capacity hai, toh 2nd-floor pe, aapka aur Dhara Di ka room, Dev-Rishita ka room, ek study room, home theatre aur ek aur guest room banjayega. Phir third floor pe Krish aur Shiva ke rooms and aur inn dono ke liye ek aur study room, and bache rooms ko hum guest rooms banasakthe hai.” Raavi replied.

“Haan yeh teekh rahega, iska plan pehle se banaya hai na tune?” Asked Gaumbi

“Haan Gaumbi, main Abhi dikhathi hoon, maine saare potential plans ke layouts laake rakhe the”

Raavi was in the process of looking for the set of papers with the master layout and floor plan and was about to get up from her place when Shiva who was on the other side of the table reached across, grabbed a file and handed it to Raavi who smiled at him, rewarding him with a kiss on the cheek. It was the way Shiva had anticipated her needs that stood out to Rishita. They then proceeded to look at the layouts, by the time everyone was satisfied with the layout it was already lunchtime and Rishita decided to stay back since after lunch they were going to discuss the interiors for the rooms.

There was a lot of talking during lunch, Rishita had never been a part of the conversation at the dining table, everyone was usually very quiet during meal times in her house, and that was when everyone was present her aunt and father were almost never there during meal times, it felt really good to sit amongst people, chat away to glory and enjoy a delicious meal.

Although Rishita was an active participant in the conversations that were taking place, part of her attention was on Shiva and Raavi, they were diagonally opposite to each other and Raavi was busy in conversation with Dhara Bhabhi, they were talking about Raavi’s Udaipur trip and everything she got from there, and Shiva was busy talking to Dev about some store related matters. Between all this she did not fail to notice how Shiva’s attention was also on Raavi, he kept looking at her from time to time to see if there was anything she needed and the same was happening with Raavi, although Raavi had given Dhara Bhabhi all of her attention she kept looking towards Shiva to check upon him. She then noticed Shiva pick up the daal from the table when suddenly Raavi stopped him.

“Shiva ruk, woh spicy waala daal hai, tu yeh kha, isme utni mirch nahi hai,” Raavi spoke while passing him a different bowl of daal. Shiva smiled at Raavi and then proceeded to eat. For the rest of the duration, Rishita kept thinking about how Raavi and Shiva always knew what the other wanted.

Even if they were not next to each other, or busy with someone else, if they were in the same room they were always aware of each other, they knew exactly when someone needed something or what the other was doing, and most times they did not even have to voice out their needs, it was almost as if there was a telepathic connection between each other. they always knew what the other wanted.

After lunch, Raavi went off to sit with Suman, Dhara and Gautam to discuss Suman’s room and the interiors for the other rooms on the first floor, while Shiva, Dev, Krish and herself sat down for some chocolate ice cream. They sat by the aangan a few paces away from Suman’s room.

Rishita was deeply involved in a conversation with Dev, they were talking about this book that Dev really liked, coincidentally it happened to be the book that Rishita was trying to read for a while now, while she was in conversation with Dev, Raavi walked out of the room and sat by Shiva they were discussing something in hushed whispers. Rishita thought of offering Raavi to get some ice cream for herself when Shiva fed her a spoon from his own bowl, without Raavi having to ask him to, not taking much notice she proceeded to busy herself with Dev, but from the corner of her eye she could see that for every 2 bites Shiva took he automatically fed Raavi the 3rd bite and she ate, while she opened up her laptop and was busy talking to Krish about something that he wanted to. The coordination these two showed amazed Rishita.

Soon it was time for her to leave, she was just about to call the driver to pick her up when Dhara Bhabhi said that Shiva and Raavi would drop her on the way, she readily agreed, this couple and their dynamic was making her very curious, so what was wrong in spending some time with them and understanding them a bit more.

During the ride back Rishita had her headphones in and was pretending not to pay much attention to the couple in front of her, even if she had her earphones in she did not have any music playing simply because she wanted to listen to any conversation that the couple may have. Raavi was on the phone with someone and was trying not to get frustrated at them, although her frustration kept mounting by the moment, her voice close to sounding hysterical, that was when she noticed Shiva’s hand on her thigh, his thumb rubbing in gentle circles trying to calm her down, the sight in front of her was very peculiar indeed. The angry young man of Somnath was trying to calm someone else down.

Soon her house arrived and she bid them a polite goodbye, as she was entering her house, she saw Raavi leaning onto Shiva’s shoulders with a pout on her face, his head tilted downward and he placed a soft kiss on her head, revving up the car and leaving, one hand on the steering and the other holding Raavi close to him.

Whatever she saw today only made her want to get to know this couple more, they seemed so close and so in sync with each other and then there was the way Shiva just became this softie around Raavi, she could not wait to know more about them. Trying to pull her head out the thoughts of the couple, Rishita tried to catch some sleep, she had to visit the Pandya’s day after tomorrow again, and she simply could not wait.
