I was thinking the same thing. In that convo VD seemed to be a loving father who was living in regret. Maybe VD having to send Mandar out was all a part of Mandars plan so he could then fake his own death and his father could live his entire life in guilt (perfect punishment for a shitty father...especially the way Amma describes their relationship).
