Isn't that the most frustrating thing? I really hate it, but sometimes just to have a peaceful trip, I go along. Thankfully my parents and in-laws are on my side, so I never have to do it outside of a wedding/ritual situation.

Over the year, I've talked to my parents and without me even saying anything now, they'll tell our relatives why I do what I do and what I believe. My parent's tone is just more polite than what I would use!😉

My parents have absolutely no problem with the way I am as my mom herself doesn’t give in to all these customs… my in laws are also mostly fine if not for their relatives pointing out. So out of respect for my in laws I do follow few things

Light sari something at home but salwar suit in college with showing that sindoor with middle parting hair😆

I can't stand that jeans and cheap tops they given her those tops are horrible.
