PART 173
Lakshman stood at the edge of the terrace.
The chilly wind blew through his shirt, but he felt nothing but numb. He could not face them or look them in the eye, lest he would break Down. It felt as if, the joy he was supposed to experience with the coming of his child was washed away and taken from him even before he could embrace it.
He wished to run away, somewhere he could never return from.
“Lakshman.”
Rams voice registered itself in Lakshmans ears, but he didn’t have it in him to turn around and answer his call.
Ram began to walk up to him, but stopped midway.
“Please come down Laksh, and tell us what happened. We are really scared. And dont worry, you dont need to hide anything from us. We … we will be able to handle it.”
“Please dont keep us waiting.”
Ram walked away as Lakshman wiped his tears and cleared his throat.
This was something he couldn’t hide. And there was no one who could tell them the truth other than him.
He absorbed from Rams example, how instead of lashing out at him, he’d calmly asked Lakshman to come down and explain everything, despite going through and even more of what Lakshman was facing.
Lakshman once again drew from his brothers example. And once again, spoke to break his brothers heart.
——————————
“I dont know what he’s hiding , he seemed very tired.”
Ram stood with the others in his room as they awaited Lakshman. Each moment was a dagger pushing deeper into their souls.
“Bhaiyya.”
Lakshmans meek voice turned all their heads to him as they inched closer.
“Laksh please tell us, Di is alright, na? Her phone isn’t reachable. Do you know if she’s landed? Even Dad or Uncel haven’t called yet..”
Lakshman stared blankly at Urmila, her words going over him as he could only reply Siyas revelation over and over again in his head.
‘For the sake of your unborn child.’
“Lakshman, your silence is killing me. Please.”
He turned to look at Ram, whose face had become pale like never before. His tears were on the verge of falling but only stopping themselves out of sheer will to not cry in front of his siblings.
“Bhaiyya…” Lakshman broke down as he approached Ram, resting his head on his brothers shoulder.
“Bhabi… Bhabi is gone. She said.. said.. she will never come back.”
————————————
A deathly silence dawned upon the room as all of them held onto each other for emotional support, recovery from what they’d just heard.
Lakshmans red eyes refused to dry as silent tears kept falling. His heart felt lighter now that he has said everything, right from their airport journey to the car that had taken her away, an at the same time was constricted, not giving him space to breathe.
Everything, except what shed said about Urmila. He didn’t know if she had told anyone yet, and didn’t have the power to bring it up in front of everyone, breaking them even further. They would know soon, but this was not the time.
“I tried, I tried a lot Bhaiyya. But, she didn’t listen. She made me promise on all of you and..I.. I was lost Bhaiyya. And in that fraction, she walked away before I could say anything.”
“Did.. Did Bhabi not trust us?” Bharat spoke up. “I know, we couldn’t give her all the peace and security that she deserved but.. I feel so helpless..”
He looked up at Maanvi, who controlled her tears and held onto a broken Mila, her gaze blank and distant.
“We let her down Bhaiyya.” Shatrughan clenched his fist. “All because of me. One action of mine. If I’d known this was going to happen.. I would have never…”
“Its not your fault.” Rams voice broke through.
In a few minutes, Ram had aged beyond his years. His face was stern and his jaws clenched, from anger on himself and the world. He had never felt this way, never blamed the world for any ill that fell upon him or his family. But today, he saw red.
Their words hurt her, their child more. And as much as he had tried to stop them, he had fallen short.
She didn’t need to go away. But now she had.
She was worried about something she knew wasn’t in any of their hands. He was expecting society to change for the better, but alas, he was too optimistic. The support was overshadowed by the critisism. Love was triumphed by hate, once again.
———————————
Food didn’t find its way down their throats, so all retired to their rooms early, grieving in their own way.
Ram sat the edge of the bed. Siyas watch and perfume left behind in front of a smiling picture of the two.
“You left me alone, Siya.” He began.
“There was so much happening, I never bothered to ask you more, how you feel. You were suffering alone for our child, and I could only spectate.”
“But you lied to me too Siya,” his voice broke. “You told me you would come back, soon. You made me give you a promise to not leave you there. You knew Siya, you couldn’t walk away if I stood in front of you.”
His tears decorated the glass , leaving stains on the spotless frame.
“Please give me the chance to stand with you Siya. For you, for our child. Don’t this away from me Siya.. I cant live like this … Come back, please.”
“Come back, please…” He kept chanting to himself, not noticing when his body let away and slipped out of consciousness.
———————————-
Urmila sat with her head in her hands, pulsating with everything she had heard. She had planned a completely different evening. Even with her Di going, she had a ray of hope. She’d tell Lakshman everything, they’d sleep in each other’s arms and her Di would come back soon to welcome her child.
But fate was faster than the wind.
Lakshman fell at her feet, his head pushed down unable to look up.
“Bhaiyya wanted to be alone. Bhabi left us. Will you push me away too, Mila?”
She didn’t look up, her sniffles refused to stop.
“Why couldn’t you stop her Laksh?”
He heard the pain and anger in her voice. And it was completely justified in all that she had heard.
“I tried all that I had Mila. I cried, begged but no avail. She had planned everything, it all happened before we could even think.”
“You left her alone, Laksh?”
“I did not Mila,” he said hurt. “She took me there because she thought I was the only one who would be able to take it. You think I lied to you Mila, but the truth is even I didn’t know about how she plans to never return. Else Mila, I wouldn’t have let it reach where we are today.”
“You.. you lied to me Laksh. You hid a lot of it from me.”
“No no Mila, I didn’t..” He held her hand slowly, as Mila looked into his glassy eyes.
“I was ready to go with Bhabi even, but then she said something that blurred me out, I lost whatever I was thinking and … had to come back.”
“What did she say?”
“She… told me Mila. About you. About, us.”
The look on Lakshmans face told her that he knew. Maybe Siya didn’t want to tell him, but she had no other option.
“I.. I couldn’t help myself Mila. I don’t know what came over me. I was so happy but also so broken.. and she walked away. I am so sorry, Mila. But please, dont push me away. Let me stay with all of you. I cant make up for what I did, but let me do the smallest I can do. I wont be able to go through this without you, Mila.”
The two sat in each other’s silence as Urmila slowly got up and walked away.
“You will always be with us Lakshman, but I dont know if I ever fully trust you.”
