I think the dupatta might be due to a special function at the college. In the original i think they had something similar but there they wore Sari i think. Not sure if it was after cheating track or much later than that - but she might sing a song or something - hence the more formal dress

After his "Nazdeek aao" i can definitely imagine him saying "dupatta hatao" in that aggressive tone
