That goes against whatever they have established for Virat..Him not twisting her hands..and also stopping his father from hitting Sai.. I thinks one should be prepared for lot of hurtful words hurled at each other..even Virat regretting marrying her for the first time...But not physical abuse.. If at all that happens..they would lose a lot of fans including me ..
Maybe, you can look at it as foreshadowing? Virat stopped Bhavani from denying food to Mohit and Sai but ended up giving the same treatment to Sai. He stopped Ninad from hitting Sai ...so might be possible..even if he doesn't actually slap, he might raise his hand...
No matter the values given by his mother, Virat has grown up seeing the abusive behaviour of his father. In moments of anger/rage, that patriarchal mindset (that has got imprinted at some level) comes out in his behaviour - even if, when he is sober, in his mind, he considers domestic violence wrong.
Take the alta episode - he is in hangry mode. Why? Because he is jealous of Sai talking to Aniket. So he asks his family "Why did you let Sai go without making her apply alta?" Then he asks Karishma to bring Sai down, "forcefully if she resists". His attitude was disgusting in that.
The food denial episode was horrible. I know Sai said a lot of hurtful things, but he too could have responded with equally piercing words. Yet, he chose to humiliate her self-respect in front of the entire family. Even when Ashwini rebuked him for his behaviour, he is seen justifying and defending himself. Only when Ashwini points out how Sai has never raised suspicions about his intentions with Pakhi - the guilt finally breaks through. So I don't think he truly managed to unlearn his in-built, overly patriarchal streak. Rather his guilt was over being unfair with someone who had been so understanding.
When his rage came out in such egregious ways for trivial to medium issues, imagine how he might react in a very, very serious matter such as Devyani's life. We can justify his rage in this issue but I'm not sure the patriarchy in him will not raise its head into giving an indigestible reaction.
I hope and pray the confrontation is limited to the cruelest, harshest words and asking her to leave to hostel and nothing beyond that...
Sorry for the long rant.....
