Chapter 3

She stopped dead in her tracks, wondering why he was calling for her when he was the one that ousted her from his cabin in the first place. If it was up to her, she didn’t mind giving him company while he worked. In the past, when she was preparing for competitions or working on her paper, she’d often consult with him. Eventually the pair found it easier to sit together rather than waste time having her walk from the library to his office every few minutes to get his opinion on something.

“How are you getting home?” Shaurya asked when he caught up to her, hoping she'd assure him that she had a safe mode of transportation back. Otherwise, he’d worry the whole night about her and she already plagued his thoughts enough without him needing another reason.

“Oh, the hostel isn’t so far off. I was just going to walk.” Her tone was matter-of-fact. After all, Anokhi had walked alone at night plenty of times in the past.

“Of course. Why am I not surprised? This is why you always get into trouble. You go seeking it out.” Shaurya was visibly annoyed at her flippant response. Only she would be so careless with herself. Anokhi on the other hand was taken aback by his annoyance since she was just telling him the truth. What was there to get so worked up about?

“Sir, why do you always lecture me?” She demanded, irritated by his constant berating. This time, she didn’t even do anything. He was the one that called her! He was the one that asked her a question to which she gave a very straightforward response! Couldn’t he just speak to her nicely? Did he stop her just so he could scold her some more?

“Because you always give me reasons to Ms. Bhalla. Besides, you’re the one with a PhD in giving lectures, so don’t ask me this question.” He countered sarcastically, without missing a beat. Despite keeping his distance, the moment their paths crossed again, the pair easily fell back into their usual back and forth. It was like no time had passed at all.

“Is that all sir? Because if you don’t have anything else to say, I’m getting late. And someone told me to get out of this campus.” Though she wasn’t seriously upset with him, she was holding a small grudge that he had told her to leave. And she had always felt comfortable displaying her annoyance with him for the way he behaved with her. Shaurya was going to point out that technically he told her to get out of his office, but she didn’t give him time to speak. She turned to leave and he caught her hand to stop her. Anokhi looked down at where his fingers gently circled her wrist and then up at him with confusion.

“Wait. I’ll drop you,” he offered, removing his hand from hers in an instant. She crossed her arms, observing him silently. Was he really volunteering to drop her home? After telling her to leave him alone, why was he willingly spending more time with her? Maybe Shaurya was just a gentleman who would have done this for any of his female students. But she wanted to test this hypothesis. Was she just like any other student for him?

“Are you coming or do you plan to spend the whole night here? Or were you expecting me to bring the car to you?” Shaurya never liked when she watched him so closely. From the moment they met, the façade he wore for the rest of the world seemed to fall short in front of her. She read him too well for his liking, sometimes better than his own family.

“Sir, don't you think it's a beautiful night,” she began. He pressed his thumb and index finger against his temples and let out a sigh, knowing he was in for some longwinded explanation. “The stars are out,” Shaurya gazed up before looking at her like she was crazy. The sky was overcast. “Somewhere,” she brazenly continued, “there’s a gorgeous breeze. The moon is shining,” He raised a brow because the moon was also covered by the clouds, and she stole a glance at him.

“Somewhere,” Shaurya finished mockingly. She nodded with a grin, sensing his waning patience. “So smart. No wonder everyone praises the great, Shaurya Sabhrewal.” He feigned a smile at the insincere compliment. Nautanki, he thought with a slight shake of his head, hiding his genuine amusement. “So, what are you saying, Anokhi?”

“What I’m saying is,” she trailed off, worried that he wouldn’t respond in the way she wanted. What if her hypothesis failed and she was just another student for him? It was true that Anokhi held no expectations from him. But not knowing what he felt was very different from knowing he didn’t reciprocate her feelings at all. What was that phrase? Ignorance is bliss! Right now, she was blissfully in love with him and blissfully unaware of where he stood in response.

“Ms. Bhalla,” he repeated, snapping her out of her momentary distraction. “Right, what I’m saying is that I’m going to walk tonight. You don’t get nights like this often and what fun is it to always go in a car?” She looked at him tentatively, not sure if Shaurya would turn around and leave.

“Listen, I don’t have time for your nonsense tonight. So go sit in the car.” Shaurya didn't know why she was insisting on walking. All he knew was, until he saw her enter the hostel, he wouldn’t be able to rest easy. Anokhi however, was a stubborn woman. So, she shook her head and began to walk away, closing her eyes and praying that he’d follow.

“Anokhi!” His frustration was reaching its breaking point. And whenever Shaurya got this way, he ended up acting from his heart not his brain. Easily overtaking her, he pulled one of her arms over his shoulders and hooked his arm under her legs, swiftly picking her up. He looked down at her sternly, silently warning her not to fight before walking towards his car. Anokhi was too stunned at the sudden action to protest. Once they got to the parking lot, he put her down by the passenger’s side door. She stumbled a little while trying to regain her footing, and he immediately held her arm to stabilize her. She didn't have to look to feel his disapprovingly gaze.

"You can barely stand properly, and you wanted to go on a midnight walk. Wow," he gave her a slow clap and she gave him a sour expression. He stood, waiting for her to sit inside, so Anokhi opened the door and settled into the familiar car, grumbling as she did. As he got into the driver’s seat Anokhi was about to complain that it wasn’t fair that he always got his way by doing this. But luck was on her side today!

As soon as his key entered the ignition, the engine sputtered for a few seconds before falling silent. Shaurya tried again to no avail. The car wasn’t starting, and he was silently begging it to not make his life more difficult tonight. Beside him, Anokhi’s smile was growing. She tried her best to hide it when Shaurya shot razors in her direction, as though she was the reason this was happening. Instead, she shook her head, tutting her tongue as though she too were disappointed that the car wouldn’t start.

"What now?" She asked innocently. But the triumph in her eyes couldn’t be hidden and the suppressed smile adorned her features again. “It looks like even your car wants me to walk tonight.” Opening the car door, Anokhi got down and turned to face Shaurya. “Good night Shaurya sir.” And with that she closed the door behind her and walked towards the college gates, wondering if her hypothesis would prove true or not.

That's the chapter! Hope you all enjoyed dramebaaz Anokhi and ever frustrated Shaurya 😆

Aww so cute. Anokhi is such a dramebaaz and Shaurya as usual is getting annoyed by her. I’m looking forward to some heart to heart talk while he drops her to the hostel ❤️
