Part 12

Mini was missing Neil. She was missing him since he left but only after coming back to his house she realized it. At first she was in denial but then she gave up fighting with her heart and embraced the reality that she is missing him and she has indeed fallen in love with him. Sometimes you don’t realize the importance of something until it is not available to you anymore. Mini was away from love. She kept running away from it, kept denying that she can love Neil in the way he loves her but at last her fears, her worries took back seat when her heart revolted against her and proclaimed its ownership now lies with Neil and not with herself.

Once Mini realized it, she accepted her new role, new responsibilities as Neil’s wife. The acceptance of wife’s role lead way to other supporting roles of daughter in law, owner of the house and she assimilated all that very well. She was now basking in the glow of her new identity and personality.

Mini clicked the pictures of all the dishes she cooked today and contemplated on sending them to Neil but she changed her mind at the last moment. She was missing him. She wanted him to know that but was not sure after what happened between them and the way Neil was upset with her, will he understand? Will he forgive her? She wanted to say so many things but didn’t know how to put them in words.

She remembered Neil’s words. “Ab jab tum bulaogi tabhi wapas aaunga." But it wasnt so easy for her also to state whats in her heart clearly. After contemplating a lot she just sent him a message. “I am back at Oberoi mansion.” She waited with bated breath for the double ticks to turn blue but much to her dismay, nothing happened. She sighed, “May be he is busy in class.” She thought and got busy in her work.

In the evening she again checked her phone and found her message had been read. She suddenly become excited for a reply as this was the first conversation in months which she was going to have with Neil after their not so normal and happy goodbye. She waited and waited looking at the phone screen for half n hour but no reply came from the other side. Tears started rolling down her eyes. She didn’t even realize it until her vision blurred. “So I was right. Neil is still angry with me. He doesn’t even want to talk to me. ” She thought as she wiped her tears. “Give him some time. He is upset but he will forgive you soon.” A small voice came from inside her heart, giving her hope and she desperately cling to it having no other option.

In the next few days she sent him many messages. Some asking about his health, some informing about him about babes health, pics of the recipes she tried, some forwarded jokes, good morning- good night’s quotes in a hope that he will at least once respond to her but she never got anything in return. His apathy and indifference made her sad every time but she wasn’t willing to lose her hope. Now she realized how it feels when someone so desperately tries to attract your attention and all you give in return is just ignorance. She recalled all those incidents when Neil tried to befriend her in their initial days and she would look at him suspiciously, doubting his motives.

Few days later Mini was getting ready for the small party in their neighborhood. She checked out herself in the mirror. For once she couldn’t identify herself. She was looking perfect. She laughed when she remembered how unkempt, unruly her appearance has been previously. Jungli in true sense, like babes used to called her. But Neil had fallen in love with her in that state also. She remembered when the first time she realized that it is important to look presentable. She has been jealous of Neil’s friend. Jazz, that girl wearing sexy sari and how she blushed when other friends teased her for having crush on Neil. “Hmm, she was his classmate right? That means she must be drooling over Neil even now.” A sudden wave of jealousy hit her again as she thought of Jazz.

“No, Neil was never interested in her.” Her heart immediately countered her mind giving her assurance.

“But he is away from you now and also angry. So there are high chances that he might get attracted towards her.” Mind threw another doubt in her way.

“No he loves you. And now look at you. How perfect you look. That Jazz has no chance in front of you.” Heart motivated her.

“But he doesn’t know that you have changed completely.” Mind reminded her.

“Yes that’s true but no need to feel bad about it. Why don’t you send your picture to him? I am sure not only he will respond to it but may also come running back to you.” Heart gave an idea and it immediately lit up Mini’s mood. She took her phone and tried some poses. Then finally she found a spot with perfect lighting and clicked a selfie. Feeling extremely nervous she somehow pressed the sent button.

Her excitement died down when she noticed that her message had no effect on him. Forget compliment, he didn’t even respond. Like always he has just ignored her message. That time she realized that may be its too late to mend their relationship. Neil has moved away from her and probably he will never forgive her. How rude and selfish he can be? Cant he look past his arrogance and see I have changed myself completely for him? But he is just giving me attitude. “I hate you Neil Oberoi. From now on I will not send any message to you.” Mini cried and again fresh tears made her eyes wet.

Neil was looking at Mini’s photo on his phone without even blinking. He couldn’t believe this was his Minnu. When did his jungli billi learn to be sophisticated and from where? He caressed her photo for the umpteenth time. Right now he just wanted to fly to her and take her in his embrace but he was afraid of her reaction. If she reacted as if he was forcing himself upon her for one more time, he will not be able to bear it.

He remembered when he dropped Minnu at her father’s house. Ever since she said no to come with him he was heartbroken and he was dreading the moment when he would have to to go without her. He had planned to say so many things and hoped she too would have to share few things before bidding goodbye but he was shattered when she ran away in her courtyard chasing away the rabbits and didn’t even spare a single glance at him let alone say good bye. That moment he had felt worthless, like he was not needed there, not needed in her life. She was fine without him and he should accept this fact as soon as possible.

He had since then immersed himself in studies to divert his mind from Minnu. He had few chances to go back to his house for a day or two but he didn’t know if he can face her again. No matter how much he tried to think anything but Minnu but his heart kept bringing her to him. His thoughts always clouded with his Minnu. He used to think was his love so superficial that Minnu couldn’t felt it? How did she manage to stay aloof from him when all he could crave was her. Their cute sweet moments, their physical intimacy however little it was, had no effect on her? He had almost given up all hopes when for the first time in months he received a message from Minnu. “I am back at Oberoi mansion.” That simple one line was enough to stir the emotions in him and cause a storm. His Minnu was back in his house that means all is not lost. May be she also misses him, may be she started caring for his maa, for his house, for…for him. “No, don’t jump at conclusions Neil. You already wrongly analyzed her feelings two times and all you got was disappointment. She is just back at your house. Who knows may be her father or Naeem bi had forced her to do so.” He chided himself.

Then getting her messages was no longer a surprise for him. Her messages become frequent and so did his emotional outburst. Apart from those forwarded messages whenever she tried to communicate with him he had to almost fight with himself to stop the urge of replying back. He wanted to start conversation but was very unsure of her reaction and her feelings. He didn’t want to nurture false hope. He didn’t want to draw conclusions on his own this time. He had clearly said her that “Jab tum bulaogi ab tabhi wapas aaunga.” Then why she doesn’t say it clearly if she wants him back? Why beating around the bush and sending him all those confusing messages?

Shakuntala saw Mini in the garden and went to join her. She observed closely, Mini takes extra care of these plants as they were planted by Neil. Shakuntala couldn’t believe the way this girl turn out to be. If she shows the before-after photos of Mini to anyone then nobody will believe that both are the same girl. Shakuntala laughed at the thought.

When Mini had defended Neil for the first time, Shakuntala had seen beyond her not so pleasing nature and found out she is not really bad just different from others. Since then Shakuntala started to notice her goodness and the fact that Mini was raised by her father alone not having any woman’s influence on her made her the way she is. Shakuntala had vowed in her heart that she will be that motherly figure in Mini’s life. But when she got to know that Mini will be living with her father and not with Neil or her then she couldn’t help but felt bad about it. Unknowingly in all those days she had become attached to Mini and hoped she too will accept her as mother. Mini’s absence made her miss Mini even more and she realized how badly she had behaved with her earlier. She was repenting her mistakes and just wanted a chance to make everything alright between them, to start over again, now as mother and daughter. And her happiness knew no bound when Mini came back in Oberoi mansion. Since then Shakuntala has not left any chance to shower her love and blessings on Mini.

Shakuntala was a mother and like every mother she could guess if there is anything wrong in her children’s life. She was confused when Neil kept calling her frequently and asked about Mini. She understood that they were not talking to each other and it made her worried. Her son has fought with her for his Minnu then what happened to him now? She could clearly see the restlessness in Mini also. Shakuntala could tell how much Mini is missing Neil when she spent hours taking care of those plants, making his favorite dishes, spending time in arranging his cupboard repeatedly even if it was not needed. Mini roams around her purposely whenever Neil calls Shakuntala. Her eyes have hope in them that Neil will ask her to give phone to Mini but everytime Neil crushes Mini’s hope.

She knew both of her children were in pain but she couldn’t decide what to do. It was between husband and wife. Was it right on her part to interfere?

“Mini, last time we perfected Shringaar ras. Now we will work on its counter part, that is, viyog ras and the bhav associated with it is virah. If shringar is spring season then viyog is autumn. You can not understand the beauty of one without other. Same way both prem and virah bhav are equally important part of love. Now sing something in this genre and we will work on it till perfection.” Guruji explained.

Mini closed her eyes again as she remembered Neil and all the suffering and pain she was going through came out in a song from her mouth-

Mini took the alaap and tears found their way through her eyes as Mini remembered all her unanswered messages. That piece by piece shattering hope, the pangs of separation turning into angst and ultimately into the anger on the arrogance of her beloved.

Guruji has left now but Mini couldn’t stop herself from humming the haunting tune repeatedly. Its rhythm was connecting to her erratic heart beats and providing much needed comfort.

The pain in her voice attracted Shakuntala’s attention also as she followed Mini upto her bedroom and observed her when she touched Neil’s cupboard, his study table, his side of bed longingly and cried silently.
