Chapter 24 – Starry Night

As Malhar and Kalyani continued on their journey, the sky turned pink indicating the impending rain. The trees were beginning to sway in the direction of the wind and dry leaves on the road were rustling due the strong winds. The weather was clearly donning on a violent persona so Malhar and Kalyani wanted to reach home before things got out of hand. Thus, they decided to take the shortcut home.

The shortcut had them driving through a lonely area with poorly lit streetlights. There were only abandoned factories and buildings on either side of the road with little to no human presence. Soon, it began drizzling and Malhar increased the pace of the vehicle. As he sped through the street, a strange thud was heard from the engine following which the jeep came to a halt and broke down. Malhar and Kalyani exchanged worried glances with each other. They both looked at their phones and noticed that there was no cell reception at their location. Luckily, Malhar had messaged Sarthak that they had left together from the mall.

Malhar got down from the jeep and began checking the engine. The engine had endured significant damage due to overheating meaning that it needed a professional fix. Malhar and Kalyani were now stranded here until they could procure a ride back home. He looked at Kalyani who was eagerly waiting for his response and told her about the situation. Kalyani immediately got out of the vehicle and suggested that they walk back to the main road so that they could hitch a ride. Malhar agreed and the duo began their journey on foot.

The strong winds had messed with the electricity supply and the once poorly lit streetlights had now gone dark. Kalyani quickly grabbed on to Malhar’s hand in fear. He knew that Kalyani was afraid of the dark so he placed his hand on hers in an attempt to reassure her. Malhar’s touch brought Kalyani back to her senses and she immediately let go of him. But before she could step a foot forward, Malhar grabbed her hand so that she could remain calm in the dark and unknowingly pulled her towards himself. Kalyani was stunned by his sudden movement and the duo locked eyes with each other.

Kalyani was looking radiant under the moonlight and Malhar was awestruck by her beauty. He gently pushed her hair strands behind her ear as he continued looking into her eyes. Kalyani stood there frozen and lost in his eyes, she couldn’t understand what was happening. The duo stood there without a care in the world but their moment was interrupted when the light drizzle turned into a roaring rain. Kalyani and Malhar ran hand in hand to find a shelter. They finally found a factory warehouse and took cover there.

Kalyani was enjoying the rain from afar while Malhar was busy trying to dry himself off. She held her hand out in the rain and naughtily splashed some rain water on him. He smilingly glared at her and continued drying himself. But Kalyani was in no mood to head inside so she again splashed some rain water on him. Malhar naughtily looked at her and said, “Kalyani, don’t try to start a fight that you can’t win.” To which Kalyani quickly retorted, “Oh really, Officer Rane!! Try me then” As she said this, she splashed more water on him and ran into the rain as Malhar chased her. Both of them were running around the empty street, Malhar was trying to catch her while she was trying to evade him. They had completely forgotten about everything else and were lost in each other. Malhar finally caught up to her and grabbed her by the waist stunning Kalyani in an instant. He bent his head down and huskily whispered in her ears, “Do you think you can outrun me, Ms. Deshmukh?” Kalyani was at a loss for words, his touch made her feel butterflies in her stomach. She couldn’t put a pin on what was pulling her towards him. His behaviour ever since her return had also baffled her with a million questions about their connection. A sense of peace washed over the duo even on the stormy night. Their eyes were locked yet again. Malhar didn’t know if he was doing the right thing or not but at the moment his heart was in control and he just didn’t want to let go of her.

The sudden sound of the thunder broke their trance, the two of them realised their positions and awkwardly parted ways. Malhar broke the silence and said, “Kalyani, let’s go inside before either of us falls sick.” Kalyani immediately agreed and the duo headed into the warehouse. They were both completely drenched at this point and Kalyani’s top had become sheer because of the water. It was now like a second skin to her, accentuating all her curves. Malhar was stopping himself from looking at her but he couldn’t help but admire her beauty. Kalyani on the other hand was engrossed in getting rid of the excess water on her but she soon felt his gaze on her. He immediately looked away in an attempt to avoid making her feel uncomfortable. Kalyani’s inner monologue was warning her against over-analysing every situation so she shrugged it off.

Malhar removed his jacket and placed it over Kalyani’s shoulders. He awkwardly said to her, “Kalyani, I think you should wear my jacket” and walked away from her. Kalyani initially didn’t understand the reason behind his action but soon realised it when she saw her reflection on a broken mirror in the warehouse. She was touched by his chivalry, her mind was filled with the thoughts of his affection towards her but she stopped herself from going down that road as she believed that he was still not over Sampada yet.

Was Kalyani ever going to give into her feelings? What else does this night have in store for Kalyani and Malhar? What will Anupriya do, when she finds out that Malhar is with Kalyani? Find out more in Chapter 25.
