Chapter 21 – Clarity

After the breakfast, everyone dispersed from the living room to do their own things. Kalyani knew that Malhar was upset because of what had happened in the morning. She wanted to have a conversation with him face to face so she followed him to his room. Malhar who noticed her following him, quickly entered his room and locked the door behind him. Kalyani was stunned by his sudden action as he was now deliberately ignoring her. Kalyani knew that she and Malhar were friendly but not friends so she walked away from his room without knocking on the door. Malhar was standing on the other side of the door cursing himself for hurting his Kalyani. He wanted to be with her all day everyday but if there was any truth to what Anupriya had mentioned earlier then he didn’t want to be the reason for hindering Kalyani’s recovery. So he decided to maintain his distance from her for the time being.

Kalyani on the other hand was angrily pacing around in her room while thinking about Malhar’s actions. She was mumbling to herself, “God Malhar ji is being so childish. If Aai was being irrational in the morning then he is being irrational now. What happened yesterday was nothing and he is just blowing things out of proportion. When will this man learn to reason? ” But she also decided to settle this matter once in for all and once again headed to Malhar’s room. In the room, Moksh was playing on the bed while Malhar was on the phone talking to his associate. He wanted to shift all their old documents and photos kept in the workshop, to a secure location so that they wouldn’t fall into the wrong hands. Avni’s previous attempt to breach the perimeter was a huge wakeup call for him and he didn’t want to risk it again.

Luckily this time around, he had unlocked his bedroom door so Kalyani stood at the entrance and knocked on the door. Malhar quickly disconnected his call and walked over to his desk. He was pretending to look busy so that Kalyani would go away. But Kalyani sighed in disappointment and knocked on the door once again. This time around Moksh pulled her into the room and made her sit on the bed while showing her his new toys. Kalyani tried to begin a conversation with Malhar but he interrupted her midsentence and said to Moksh, “Moksh!! Get ready quickly. I will drop you off at your play date and head to the station. I have some important work there so I will pick you up in the evening on my way back home. Let’s go..let’s go!!” Although he said this to Moksh, his intended recipient was Kalyani. Kalyani realised that and mumbled to herself, “Attitude huh!! You want to see attitude Malhar ji. Fine then I’ll show you what attitude is.” She stomped her foot in anger and left from the room. Malhar’s inner monologue was pouring out apologies to Kalyani for irritating her but his hands were tied.

Moksh wanted his mother’s help to get dressed so he picked out his favourite outfit and headed out to her room. Kalyani was more than happy to see Moksh, she helped him get ready and complimented his cuteness. He kissed her goodbye and left for his playdate. By the time Moksh had come to the garage, Malhar had already loaded his jeep will all the document boxes. The father and son duo soon headed out together.

Malhar had dropped Moksh off at his playdate and reached his station. He was arranging all the documents in the old record room when he noticed something rather odd. There were some handwritten bills in one of Nal emporium’s account books which were signed by Aaosaheb. What was odd about the bills were that the handwriting in it was very familiar to Malhar, he thought hard trying to figure out where he had seen them before when clarity set in. He remembered that this looked similar to the writings in the Swara’s diary.

Malhar immediately rushed to his desk and fetched the diary. As he compared the two together, it was quite clear that the handwritings were a match. He didn’t want to jump to any conclusions so he quickly sent both the samples to the handwriting analyst for confirmation. As he sat on his chair awaiting results, his mind was filled with guilt and shame. Images of all the times when he had insulted, threatened and taunted Kalyani about her mother’s involvement in Swara’s death was flashing before him. He continued remembering all the times when he had forced Kalyani to do his bidding under the pretence of preventing Anupriya from going to jail. He was truly ashamed of his actions, Kalyani and Anupriya were innocent all along and his monstrosity had done nothing but hurt them in return. He didn’t even have the courage to face Anupriya. He also realised that once Kalyani regained her memories and found out the truth, she would definitely leave him and that she was right in doing that. While he knew that she deserved better, he also knew that he couldn’t live without her. The thought of losing her was driving him crazy, but he was now ready to move mountains to regain her trust and forgiveness.

Malhar’s chain of thoughts were broken when he received the call from the analyst who confirmed what Malhar had known all along. It was indeed Aaosaheb’s handwriting meaning that she was the perpetrator behind building a wall of misunderstanding between him, Anupriya and Kalyani. He immediately decided to break the news to the rest of the family and headed home.

At Ahilya Niwas, Anupriya and Kalyani were busy spending time with each other. Anupriya had made Kalyani’s favourite noodles which the mother daughter duo had relished together. They were now in Kalyani’s bedroom where Kalyani was recounting her experience in Mumbai. She was resting her head on her mother’s lap while Anupriya was lovingly caressing Kalyani’s hair. As their conversation progressed, the warmth of the afternoon sun had put the mother and daughter to sleep.

Malhar reached home and hurried inside. He went straight to Sarthak and Anupriya’s room and stood at the entrance of the door. Sarthak was taken back looking at a panting Malhar and checked with him if he was doing alright. Malhar said to Sarthak, “I am fine Kaka. I need to disclose something very important to you and Maai, can you please get her?” As instructed, Sarthak went to Kalyani’s room and quietly woke Anupriya up and brought her up to speed on what had just happened. Anupriya slowly and carefully placed Kalyani’s head on the pillow and accompanied Sarthak back to their room.
