I don't think he ever meant those words about her leaving. It was a candy meant to appease Sai's anger at their upcoming wedding.
I'm not saying he will die of heartbreak or become devdas or anything, but between the two, he is not the emotionally strong one. So, if and when they separate he will be the one feeling it more, I believe. (He tends to feel it more when she disconnects with him)
I don't even think the 'jao' was an alternative to living with him. It was uttered in anger, and was only meant to show her that she'll find it difficult without a support.
It is true that Virat Sir is not emotionally strong..every nuance of Sai affects him a lot, since GC days...her indifference hits him hard...her happiness makes him happy..he can go to any extent to make her comfortable...but Sai also is not that emotionally strong...she just pretends to be so...otherwise when Virat Sir says we will be friends, her tears escape which she carefully hides n says I don't need another friend...when he says jao..she is shell shocked...I think the creatives have made the characters so complex that they are not able to support them with an apt script...so they end making Sai more mufat n Virat Sir Silent though they r very much opposite from inside...I don't know I have become very confused myself
