Chapter 19 - Sweet Nothings

It was around midnight, the entire house was as quiet as a mouse. Everyone was fast asleep but Kalyani was wide awake. She was tossing and turning in her bed but was still not feeling sleepy. She wanted to drink some water but the water jug was empty. So she decided to fetch some water from the kitchen. On her way to the kitchen, she noticed that the lights were turned on in one of the bedrooms so she walked towards it to check if everything was alright. As she stood at the entrance of the room, she saw that Malhar was sitting on floor with his phone in his hand and tears in his eyes. It was looking like as though he was scrolling through his photo gallery. Moksh on the other hand was fast asleep in his bed.

Kalyani thought that Malhar was crying while looking at Sampada’s photos, when in reality he was looking at Kalyani’s pictures and reminiscing moments of their love. Kalyani felt bad for him, she didn’t know if it was appropriate for her to interrupt him but she couldn’t help herself. She knocked on the door and stepped in. Malhar quickly wiped his tears and shut down his phone so that she wouldn’t see her pictures in his phone. She sat down beside him and said, “Malhar ji I know it’s very difficult to forget her but please don’t waste your tears on the woman who didn’t value you. There is no point in loving someone who never loved you back. It’s been more than a month now and as painful as it, it’s time for you to move on.”

Malhar was taken aback for a moment but quickly realised what Kalyani was thinking and breathed a sigh of relief. Kalyani continued saying, “You should stop wasting your time on that loser and do something fun Malhar ji. And I think I know just what’ll cheer you up.” As she said this, she held his hand in hers and instructed him to get up with her. He had no idea what his wife was up to but he didn’t want to let go of any opportunity to spend some time with her. So Malhar turned off the lights and headed out with Kalyani while Moksh could slept peacefully.

Kalyani took him to the kitchen and said, “You know what Malhar ji, the one thing that cheers me up when I’m sad is hot chocolate and I will make one for you right now. We’ll have it together and I promise you, you’ll feel better.” Malhar was just stunned to see his wife’s cute antics. Even when she didn’t remember him as her husband, she deeply cared for him.

Kalyani looked through the kitchen cabinets and gathered all the ingredients. As she began preparing the drink, she looked at Malhar and said, “Malhar ji it’s Friday night…you should be enjoying yourself and not drowning yourself in your misery. I have an idea, let’s watch a movie together. Clearly both of us are not sleepy so we might as well have some fun while we are at it.” Malhar was just standing there with a big smile on his face. He was admiring his precious wife and savouring the moment. Kalyani noticed that Malhar was lost in his thoughts so she waved her hand in front of his eyes and said, “ahhh hello….Malhar ji did you hear what I just said? Please na let’s watch a movie together…I will even let you choose the movie……pleeaaassseee.” Malhar was brought back to reality by her adorable face and he happily agreed. Her bubbliness was making him fall in love with her all over again. He wanted to hug her that very instant but he controlled himself.

Kalyani clapped in merriment and poured the hot chocolate into 2 mugs. Malhar was on cloud nine as everyone was fast asleep and nobody would disturb their quality time. Kalyani also quickly made some popcorn to accompany their movie night and the two of them headed out to the media room.

In the media room:

Kalyani placed the hot chocolate and popcorn on the tray table and went to turn on the TV. She requested Malhar to pick a movie but he was more interested in looking at her than watching the movie so he told her to go ahead with her choice. Kalyani then put on a thriller and went back to sit on the couch. Malhar and Kalyani were sitting on the same couch but in two different corners although Malhar wanted her to sit close to him. He sipped on the hot chocolate and was amazed by its taste. He immediately complimented it. Kalyani was thrilled to hear his compliment and said, “Thank you Malhar ji, i am so glad you liked it. Virat taught me how it make it actually. He used to make it for me when I was living with him.”

The mere mention of Virat made Malhar’s face go sour. He had no ill feelings towards Virat but he was slightly jealous of the bond that Virat and Kalyani shared. His expressions were basically that of a jealous boyfriend and that confused Kalyani. She didn’t what was the reason behind it so she asked him, “Malhar ji do you have a problem with Virat or something? I have been noticing it from yesterday, every time I talk about him…you make this face.” To which he quickly recovered and replied, “What face Kalyani? I didn’t make any face. And why will I have a problem with your friend? You are thinking too much.” Kalyani was not convinced but she still shrugged it off thinking that she was unnecessarily jumping to conclusions.

Kalyani was engrossed in the movie while Malhar was busy staring at her. She could feel his gaze on her multiple times during the movie but every time she looked back at him to confirm it, he would be looking at the movie. She convinced herself that she was reading too much into everything and brushed it off.

It was a breezy night in Aurangabad and Kalyani had paired her night shorts with a tank top, so she soon began feeling cold. She quickly snuggled in the throw blanket and continued watching the movie. All Malhar wanted to do was cuddle with her but he knew that it was not possible. The distance between them was killing him. Malhar pretended to feel cold too thinking that she might offer to share the throw blanket with him. But much to his dismay, Kalyani paid no attention to him. He smiled thinking that subtlety was not his Kalyani’s strong suit and explicitly said, “God!! It’s awfully cold tonight isn’t it Kalyani?”

Kalyani realised that Malhar was feeling cold as well and offered to get him a blanket from his room. She was shooting down his ideas one after the other today, there he was thinking that he could cuddle with her under the same blanket and there she was trying to ruin that opportunity by getting him a separate blanket. He quickly responded, “No Kalyani its ok I’ll manage. Moksh is a light sleeper and if you go in to get a blanket, he’ll get disturbed. You don’t worry, I’ll manage somehow.” And made a sad face as he said it.

Kalyani was in awe of Malhar’s affection towards Moksh but she also felt bad that he had to sit through the rest of the movie feeling cold. She initially felt uncomfortable at the thought of sharing the throw blanket with him but she knew that her intentions were pure so she said to him, “Malhar ji if you want we can share this throw blanket together…that is only if you don’t mind.” This was the sentence that Malhar had been waiting to hear all night so he quickly agreed without wasting any time. Kalyani then moved closer to him and extended the throw blanket. She had maintained a little distance from him but Malhar was just excited to be closer to her.

Halfway through the movie, Kalyani had fallen asleep on Malhar’s shoulder. He just wanted the moment to freeze in time and never end. He was lovingly caressing her face and admiring her beauty. Their marriage had been quite turbulent so they had never done a movie night like this before and he was cursing himself for it. He realised the importance of such small loveable moments in life and promised her that once she was all better, he would never hurt her ever again. He covered her with the throw blanket and pulled her in closer as she slept comfortably in his arms. And within no time, Malhar was also fast asleep with his arms around her. This was the first time in a long time that Malhar had slept peacefully and it was only because of his Kalyani. That night, both of them slept with a smile on their face.

But the morning brought with it, its own set of hurdles.
