Chapter 15 – Start of Something New

As Kalyani regained her consciousness, Malhar was the first person she saw. His presence unknowingly made her feel secure. She realised that she was finally home and her lips curved into a smile. While Malhar knew that he had to be mindful of his actions around her, the sound of her “Malhar ji” was a like a drug to him. He couldn’t help but rush to her side. He sat down by her bedside and helped her sit-up. He caressed her face while asking her if she was doing ok and offered her some water. He was almost frantic in his efforts and that was quite evident to Kalyani.

Kalyani was finding it hard to believe that the man whose demeanour was always strict and fear-inducing, was in front of her today behaving in a mellow and caring manner. She couldn’t put a pin on what had driven this change in his behaviour but noticing his angst, she held his hand and looked him straight in the eyes as she reassured him that she was feeling absolutely fine. Her acknowledgement was all that Malhar needed and he slowly calmed down.

Anupriya entered the room at that very moment and was shocked to find Malhar with her daughter. She didn’t hate him but she was just scared that his proximity could hinder Kalyani’s recovery process. Until such a time as she had figured out his ulterior motives, Anupriya wanted Malhar to stay away from Kalyani. She walked over to Malhar and suggested that he should help Moksh get ready for school. Malhar realised the subtext of that suggestion, he quickly got off the bed and told Kalyani to care of herself as he left from the room. Once he left the room, Anupriya hugged Kalyani and enquired if she was feeling ok. Even before Kalyani could answer, Anupriya hugged her again tightly as if she was trying to reassure herself that her daughter had really returned home.

Kalyani knew how emotionally attached her Aai was to her, she released herself from their hug and requested her Aai to calm down. She expressed that she understood how frightening and dark the last month might have been for Anupriya without her. She promised her mother that she will never go away from ever again. Both the mother and daughter shared an emotional moment. Anupriya knew that it would be counter-productive to ask Kalyani if she remembered anything about the accident but her mind wandered in that thought. Kalyani knew what her mother was thinking so she responded that as much as she wanted to share everything that had happened with her, she still couldn’t recollect the reason for the accident.

Anupriya instantly steered their conversation away from that topic and exclaimed that she didn’t want to listen through that horror again. She assured Kalyani that when the time was right, everything would come back to her and until such a time, all Kalyani had to do was to rest and recuperate her energy. But Kalyani had too many questions in her mind apart from her accident. She began asking her mother as to why the house looked so different now, Where Atharv was and what had happened to Sampada as the last thing she had remembered was that Atharv had abducted Sampada. She also wanted to know who the new people in the house were, what had happened to Malhar and why he was behaving oddly with her earlier.

Anupriya stopped Kalyani midway through her interrogation and instructed her that she would get all her answers but only after breakfast. All Kalyani wanted were answers, she was in no mood to eat but she knew how adamant Anupriya could get, so she agreed and informed Anupriya that she would meet her at the dining table. Anupriya smiled and before leaving the room, she informed Kalyani that Virat had brought them up to speed on how he had rescued Kalyani and also that they had convinced him to stay over. Kalyani was relieved that her friend had not left before meeting her.

In the meantime, Malhar had woken Moksh up and had gently broken the news to him. Moksh was initially sad that he had to once again wait to be with his mother but Malhar promised him that she was going to recover soon and then they could be a family. Although Moksh was little child, his maturity trumped his innocence. He hugged his father for comfort and assured him that he would follow his request to the T. Malhar had tears in his eyes seeing Moksh’s maturity. He kissed him on the head and helped him get dressed for school. Soon Moksh was done with his breakfast and left for school in his school bus.

In Kalyani’s bedroom:

Kalyani got down from her bed and opened her closet to fetch a dress before heading to the bathroom but what she saw was strangely unfamiliar to her. The closet was filled with sarees. As far she remembered, she never wore Indian outfits let alone sarees. She was wondering where all her clothes had gone and called out to her Aai. Hearing Kalyani’s call, Anupriya rushed to Kalyani’s side. The minute she entered the room, Kalyani questioned her mother about the sarees. Anupriya was taken aback for minute, she had removed all the memorabilia from Kalyani’s room but she had totally forgotten about the fact that Kalyani preferred wearing western clothes 7 years ago. She was mocking her stupidity while thinking of a reason to give Kalyani.

Anupriya was sleep deprived and exhausted. Given that, she was struggling to come up with an excuse instantly. She was stammering while trying to explain herself to Kalyani. Kalyani read her mother’s body language and became suspicious. She knew that Anupriya was trying to hide something. All the new changes had already overwhelmed Kalyani and Anupriya’s actions were now adding to her agitation. Kalyani persisted to know what her mother was hiding. It was very evident to her that this was bigger than just her clothes and she now wanted to get to the bottom of it. Anupriya began sweating on hearing Kalyani’s demand for an explanation.
