I thought the Oedipal complex was only related to birth mothers and their child.

Oedipus had an adopted mother, and was unaware of his origins and driven by forces he did not understand. He tried to escape but ultimately married his birth mother.

I always saw that the drive behind the Oedipal complex was the need to reconnect to the birth mother, to the origin.

Bhavani may have been a mother figure, but she cannot replace Ashwini, the birth mother
