Chapter 9 – Two Truths And A Lie

That night, the investigators had arrived at Ahilya Niwas to question someone in connection with Kalyani’s abduction. They had recovered a particularly crucial piece of evidence which was acting as the driving force behind this interrogation. All the members of the family were drawing their own conclusions at this. Anupriya was thinking that maybe the investigators had finally found something solid against Malhar while Sarthak and Malhar were wondering who in their family was involved in all this. They knew how cruel Aaosaheb was but they also knew she would not do anything to harm Kalyani -- her golden goose – as she was using Kalyani’s position to flourish her Nal Emporium. On the other hand, Avni was beaming with overconfidence as she had already snuck into the resort and destroyed the CCTV footage from the day of the party. So she was sure that nobody could found out what she had done.

But things were about to go south, Avni’s plan had actually backfired as Sarthak, who had a copy of the CCTV footage, had submitted it to the investigators unbeknownst to her. The footage had now been thoroughly examined and the investigators were in fact there to take Avni in for questioning. One of the cameras had clearly captured Avni spiking Malhar’s drink. The Deshmukhs and the Ranes were truly horrified upon seeing what was put in front of them. Malhar and Sarthak realised how foolish they were in trusting a girl who was only using them against their own family.

Malhar was out of patience now, he grabbed Avni and demanded her to spill the beans on why she had drugged him. Anupriya pushed Malhar away and slapped Avni hard in retaliation. Unable to see any other option, Avni admitted that she was indeed the one who had spiked Malhar’s drink. But she quickly recovered herself by saying that she had only done it so that Malhar could get angry on Kalyani. She also tells that she didn’t have any idea what had happened with Kalyani after that as she had left the party with the rest of the family that night. Avni was a vile woman, that day she had left the party with the family so that she could use it as her alibi later. But what nobody knew was that once she had reached home she had stealthily gone back to the resort to carry out the rest of her plan. She uses this to her advantage and turns to Sarthak while shedding crocodile tears and exclaims that she had never expected that Malhar would become so violent. Sarthak was not in any mood to buy her story today, he wanted to rip her apart but controls himself. He requested the investigators to take her in for the next set of proceedings and Avni was taken into custody.

Anupriya was at her wits end, every lead was turning out to be a dead end. If Avni had drugged Malhar then he was truly inebriated to remember anything. But the fact of the matter was that since he didn’t remember anything, they were back to square one again. Sarthak tried consoling her even though she refused his care. He had realised his mistakes and had apologized to Anupriya on multiple accounts for all his wrong doings. Though she paid no heed to it, he was still committed to making things right with her and Kalyani at any cost. Avni’s betrayal had shown him the value of true love and family.

It had been 2 weeks now and Kalyani’s whereabouts were still unknown much to everyone’s dismay. Even the once naughty and chirpy child, Mukku, had now become sad without his mother. His playfulness had diminished completely. Anupriya tried her best to put on a smile in front of Mukku, but she failed. It was as though a sense of loss had taken over everyone’s lives, each of them was suffering in their own way. Malhar’s suspension was revoked on the basis of the CCTV footage and he was now back on the job. Finding Kalyani was his only priority.

One night while having dinner with the family, Malhar gets a rather disturbing call. Pawar would have called him to report that a body matching Kalyani’s description had been found and was kept at the government hospital morgue for identification. His heart immediately sank and he was unable to process the information for a second. He didn’t even want to imagine a life without her and now if that body turned out to hers then he didn’t know what he would do. Anupriya and Sarthak who were at the table with him overheard the entire conversation and were shattered as well. Anupriya felt as though the ground beneath her foot was pulled away. All three of them rushed to the hospital while praying that it was not their beloved Kalyani.

At the Government Hospital:

Tensions were running high. Anupriya, Malhar and Sarthak entered the morgue gripping on to their last ray of hope. The doctor uncovered the face of the body and Anupriya began weeping senselessly clutching Sarthak’s hand. Fortunately, it was a cry of relief as the body was not that of Kalyani’s. All three of them could feel a sense of peace take over. It was a fact that Kalyani was still missing but at least they could now bank on the fact that she was still alive. Their stroke of luck continued that day as they noticed a familiar face in the general ward of the hospital while they were on their way out. The patient was none other than Aparna. On checking with the doctor, they found that Aparna had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and was currently being treated for the same.

Aparna took one look at them and began weeping. She was truly remorseful, having the disease made her realize how petty she was in constantly troubling her family unnecessarily all these years. She had realized how lonely she was without her family and wanted to be with them, but her actions had brought her to a stage where she did not have the courage to face them anymore. Aparna turns towards Malhar and begs for his forgiveness. She confesses that she was the one who had kidnapped Moksh five years ago and also revealed that Mukku was none other than his son Moksh. Anupriya had totally forgotten about that because of what they had just gone through, but as soon as Aparna starts revealing the truth she starts panicking. Sarthak and Malhar were taken aback for moment, Aparna then goes on to reveal how Kalyani found out about it on the day of Ahir’s murder. They were shocked and perplexed as to why Kalyani had misled them this way. Before things could get out of hand, Anupriya stepped in and told them everything that had happened and the reason why Kalyani had hidden such an important truth from them. Anupriya mentions Moksh’s involvement in Ahir’s murder, Kalyani’s video confession and mentions how it was her decision to keep Moksh as Mukku and that she was the one who had forced Kalyani to stay silent. She cried that she did that as she didn’t want to lose her daughter so she had convinced Kalyani to back down. But then Aparna chimes in and clears Moksh’s actions as well. Aparna indicates that she was a witness to the entire ordeal that day and describes how Ahir was trying to kill Kalyani on that day. She confirms that Moksh’s action were truly accidental and were done in an attempt to protect his mother. She makes it clear that Ahir was the perpetrator that day and not Moksh.

This was a lot of information for both the men to comprehend at once. They did not know what to do or how to react. They simply exited the hospital and headed home while Anupriya stayed back to care for Aparna. Anupriya tried to console Aparna and reassures her that she was not too late in correcting her mistakes. She thanked Aparna for exonerating her daughter and her grandchild and promised to visit her often and to pay for her treatment as well. But Aparna had made peace with her destiny now, she informs Anupriya that she needed nothing in return and that it was her way of paying her dues. This was Aparna’s penance. Both the women share a compassionate hug and Anupriya headed home respecting Aparna’s wishes.

How were Sarthak and Malhar going react to all this? Was this going to stir things up once again? Was it going to lead to another misunderstanding between the Ranes and Deshmukhs? Was Moksh finally free to be himself? How was it going to affect everyone’s life? Was Kalyani ever going to be found? Find out more in Chapter 10.
