Sorry, forgot to mention my rating of the book 😛 I’d give The Shining 4 stars. In certain parts, the rating dipped to about a 3.5 but overall I’d give it a 4.
I considered reading the sequel at some point but the sequel is apparently not a patch on the original; many fans of The Shining were disappointed with it.

I agree. The Shining is not a conventional horror, the horror is more to do with the characters and how situations can change them.

Hey shreya

No, I haven't read the mud vein. It's cover creeped me out a bit 😆. But I think I will pick give it a try. I have read the "Never never "trilogy of hers co-writtern with colleen hoover. I read it way back in 2017 I think. It was sweet. Tarryn's books are pretty hit and miss. You may like one but absolutely hate another. I haven't had such problem with any other author. One cannot put a finger on what went wrong with the book.

Will post my review of The Shining in a while. Please skip the next couple of posts if you are reading the book or plan on reading it.

The Shining was a book I’d been intending to read for a while but the size and genre of the book made me put it off for later.

I had consciously kept away from reading the synopsis or watching the movie because I knew I would end up reading the book at some point and didn’t want to spoil that experience. So I got into reading the book knowing absolutely nothing about it. I expected the book to have a lot of jump scares and ghosts popping out of nowhere and I was surprised that the book had a lot more to it than the conventional horror.

Having read 2 of Stephen King’s books earlier I knew that he tends to delve a lot into the characters’ psyche and give a lot of background.

I started reading the book expecting it to start off on a slow note and then pick up later on but the book started off on an exciting note right from the beginning. Stephen King gives an introduction into the psyche of the characters which makes them relatable and one is able to understand why they make the decisions that they do without judging them.

King’s strength is his ability to write characters that seem relatable even if the situations in which they are, are anything but relatable.

The characters are so well written in this book, be it Wendy who is torn between her love for her husband and the belief that he is beyond redemption or her 5 year-old son Danny who has “The Shining” or my favourite written character, Jack for how well written, layered and human he was as a character.

Another character in the book is The Overlook Hotel with its many stories and secrets. If there was anything really scary or intimidating it was the hotel that seemed like a monster that swallowed the people who came there. Stephen King is a master storyteller, he gave an inanimate structure character and gravitas. It takes some talent to manage to do that.

Like I mentioned the horror was not really the jump scares or the ghosts but the horror was how humans become when they succumb to their inner demons. The family dynamic between these 3 characters was very interesting to read.

What I disliked about the book -

1. I excepted it to be a conventional horror with jump scares so was left a little disappointed (my fault that I didn’t know what the book was about). Had I known, I wouldn’t have expected a quintessential horror novel.

2. The story lagged a bit in the between which was a bit of a downer considering it started off at a good pace.
3. I wish the book had ended and there was no sequel. The end of the book hinted at more to come and it would have been better if the story ended the way it did.

Overall it was a 4* book for me and I want to finally watch the movie soon and also hope to read IT in the near future though that will be a mammoth undertaking.
