Isn't it booming here? Everyone now has a Netflix... We'll atleast most of us?
It's doing reasonably well, but not nearly as much as they would like. It's understandable also, they have an expensive service competing with a practically free Hotstar, which has way more tailored content for India.
Anyhow my point was all these production companies start with making budget but good content. Then they get trapped in these Bollywood biggies and their expensive productions with zero returns. So I am just expecting the same with Netflix. Prime is too tight strung a service to splurge. And Disney has burnt its hands a few times. 😆

So the whole strategy of OTT release of low - medium budget movies not making business sense? For whom? The makers or the OTT guys?
Were the release happening just because the producers could not wait endlessly for the situation to improve... And then battle each other for a release date?
Did they think it is better to take a hair cut now than wait and risk movies bombing at the box office?
Is it just hotstar that is suffering or Netflix and prime too?
I was hoping that OTT could be a platform to release movies that are not given a fair deal by multiplex chains
It wasn't really much of a strategy as it was Disney dumping all of its films on its streaming service. Zee is doing the same thing. There was speculation since then that they would shut Fox and now it's just grown louder.
Hotstar definitely picked steam with the films and Disney has been flaunting the numbers. But the service is too cheap to actually make any money from subscribers. Hotstar makes its money from advertising which has picked up on the back of IPL and not these films.
Netflix and Prime have only got a couple of films on streaming. They are great platform for those long tail releases which would flop in theatres like Priyanka's White Tiger. These Coolie No 1 and Gunjan type projects will do nothing for them.

Hmm.. Good observation about films..
Any information about how zee is faring on non film content ? They have commissioned a lot of Web series..
Sony has also entering the space.. Wondering how will they fare in the long run.
Uss waqt haalat bura tha... lekin Kjo aur uski manipulation se face save kar liya.
Disney tab UTV ke saath tha... aur India chod ke baag gaya back to back flops aur 25 saal se bante hue Jagga release kar ke. Ab FOX Disney hai... aur bhaag rahe hai... galey mein Bramhastra atka ke.
Brahmastra's budget is way too inflated at this point to be shifted to streaming. They need to risk theatrical release mixed with TV and streaming rights for any shot at recovery.
But will they ever manage to finish that film. 😆

Not really sure of either of these two. They both don't release a lot of detailed numbers. Zee5 is growing fast in territory scale though and production size. They only release DAU metrics and I think they are stronger than Netflix India and Prime India there. Just again it's also very cheap.
