Totally unaware of what had taken place in Madurai, Mukilan, Kalaiarasan and Mukunthan, the three armed policemen who had been placed to protect Minister Kavita now advanced towards the village to do just the opposite.

They had stood wondering and voicing their doubts and concerns after their video call had been abruptly cut off and then had collectively decided that the best course of action was to kill Minister Kavita and make good their escape.

They proceeded boldly with their machine guns, locked and loaded and ready to spray bullets at their target and then all three caught sight of the top of the hill in the distance and smiled happily for they knew that their prey was not too far away.

They stepped out of the tall green grass and into the single narrow path which obviously would lead them into the village and then all three of them realized that they were not alone for in the path and just ahead of them, stood a man with dark glasses and bent over a cane

But the cane and the dark glasses were just a cover they knew in a few moments by the way the man began to walk and walk unerringly towards them and all three of them could feel the intensity of his eyes even though they were masked and hidden by the dark glasses he was wearing.

He stopped and hunching his weight and laying it on the cane, looked at them with a smile that was no smile and most probably was the kind of smiled, a cat gave the rat before it killed it.

' So, here you are and here I am and we meet on this path that leads to Perumalvaram. But, you will not be entering it for all your destinies finish here on this path that you have taken and took it a long time ago.'

All three warily cast their eyes around them and then slowly moved around and stood in a triangular position with their guns pointing out ready to take on any other unexpected danger that might pop up like the man in front of them.

Mukilan sneered, ' We will talk about the path in detail that we supposedly took a long time ago but not before we talk about what we are going to do with you.'

Pointing to his raised machine gun, ' you are unarmed and are facing three highly trained police commandos.'

Mukunthan joined in, ' Mukil, let's shoot this ba...rd and be on our way for it is getting late and we have just a few more hours of sunlight left.'

The man with the dark glasses smiled and sneered, ' just a few more hours of light left. why, are you scared of the dark, young man?'

Mukunthan yelled, ' scared of the dark and that too in this big garden that passes itself off like a forest and a protected sanctuary. Surely, you know you have a bad sense of humour, beggar man and I am sorry to say even more bad sense of timing.'

The man shook his head and said, ' I thought I would chat with you and give you all an opportunity to confess to your crimes and also admit to the crime that you have currently set your sights on.'

Mukilan smiled and said, ' Listen, you stupid dog, we are cops and we are in charge of Minister Kavita's personal security and we are going to meet her in the village and safely escort her back to Madurai. So, stop wasting our time and f..k off and find a temple where you can beg in peace or else we will be forced to hurt you and hurt you badly.'

Mukunthan stepped forward and yelled loudly, ' All alone and the dog has the balls to challenge us.'

The man smile again and said, ' Alone. Who said I was alone? I am never alone at least not when I go to meet snakes and rats in human shapes and I always bring some sort of backup with me.'

All three traitors smiled and laughed loudly and asked, ' backup. you mean you have brought some more beggars as your backup. you are really a funny man.'

The man smiled and slowly removed his glasses and said, ' I know I am a funny guy and I get that a lot and have gotten a lot of that over the years but I am still here while those who smiled and sneered are not.'

He turned and whispered, ' Buddha, just this one time, I give you permission not to hold back. Do what you have to do and join me on the mountain for the time has come and it is about time.'

Mukilan, Kalaiarasan and Mukunthan looked at each other and asked one another the same question, ' Did I hear it right? Did he say the name Buddha? what does it mean and who is he calling by that name?'

They got the answer to the question for Buddha stepped out and by the time their brains could process what they were seeing, Buddha the lion launched himself on them and the forest was momentarily filled with screams and wails of terror and then the forest fell silent once more and all was well and normal.

To all you beautiful mothers that carried life in their wombs and carry life and love in their souls.

Giving birth is little more than a set of muscular contractions granting passage of a child. Then the mother is born.

When the Good Lord was creating mothers, He was into His sixth day of "overtime" when the angel appeared and said. "You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."

And God said, "Have you read the specs on this order?" She has to be completely washable, but not plastic. Have 180 moveable parts...all replaceable. Run-on black coffee and leftovers. Have a lap that disappears when she stands up. A kiss that can cure anything from a broken leg to a disappointed love affair. And six pairs of hands."

The angel shook her head slowly and said. "Six pairs of hands.... no way."

It's not the hands that are causing me problems," God remarked, "it's the three pairs of eyes that mothers have to have."

That's on the standard model?" asked the angel. God nodded.

One pair that sees through closed doors when she asks, 'What are you kids doing in there?' when she already knows. Another here in the back of her head that sees what she shouldn't but what she has to know, and of course the ones here in front that can look at a child when he goofs up and say. 'I understand and I love you' without so much as uttering a word."

God," said the angel touching his sleeve gently, "Get some rest tomorrow...."

I can't," said God, "I'm so close to creating something so close to myself. Already I have one who heals herself when she is sick...can feed a family of six on one pound of hamburger...and can get a nine year old to stand under a shower."

The angel circled the model of a mother very slowly. "It's too soft," she sighed.

But tough!" said God excitedly. "You can imagine what this mother can do or endure."

Can it think?"

Not only can it think, but it can reason and compromise," said the Creator.

Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek.

There's a leak," she pronounced. "I told You that You were trying to put too much into this model."

It's not a leak," said the Lord, "It's a tear."

What's it for?"

It's for joy, sadness, disappointment, pain, loneliness, and pride."

You are a genius, " said the angel.

Somberly, God said, "I didn't put it there.” ― Erma Bombeck, When God Created Mothers

The Earth appears to be like a tiny blue marble to the eyes of those who have had the luck of seeing it from space and realize how tiny and fragile it really is and what a miracle life really is and which we take for granted.

A tiny marble, a tiny colourful bubble that holds in its loving gravity all that was, is and will be and ever be. All our ancestors, starting from the first simple microbe, bacteria was born here and so was you, I and all our family members that came before us.

All those who have died are inside this bubble called earth and yet so far away from us and in a different state.

Inside this Earth, you and I are our very own bubbles forming our very own family circles and we exist, live on in the bubble of our minds and lives.

Doors close and doors open. Light is extinguished and new light shines through. Eyes close on life and death welcomes them with open arms and new eyes of new lives open and God welcomes them with an open heart and a brand new book for them to begin writing their voyage.

I sought my soul, but my soul I could not see. I sought my God, but my God eluded me. I sought my brother and I found all three.

Their bond was forged in the darkness of the womb. Their love began with their first heartbeats and they heard each other and sensed each other.

They felt each other first through touches and nudges and then they communicated with each other through push and pull motions.

She nudged and he gave way.

She pulled and he went with her.

She embraced and he basked in her love.

She said, ' I am first. I am going first.'

He said, ' you are first and you will always be the first for me, regardless.'

Suja came first and Vijay came next and they would spend their lives arguing about who came first, not into this world but into life and that is something only God can answer for it is the father and mother and the creator of all life.

Jeeva's gynaecologist Dr Aparna had suggested to her that it would be safer if she opted for a C-section since she was carrying twins but she had refused and instead asked her doctor if she had herself opted for a caesarian section whiled delivering her two children.

She had said no and Jeeva immediately pointed a finger at her and gestured in an incriminating manner, ' enna doc, one rule for you and another for me. Why?'

' Jeeva, I suggested a C-section procedure for two reasons. Firstly, the pain and secondly because you are going to deliver twins and not to forget that they are both rather big in size and above the average size of a baby.'

The door opened and Raman who happened to walk in, immediately sensed that both the women were in the midst of some kind of important discussion and paused at the entrance and looked worriedly at Jeeva who waved him in and looked at the doctor, ' doc, please ask my other half the same question and let us both hear what he has to say about it?'

Raman closed the door behind him and came and sat next to Jeeva and looked at the doctor, ' what is it, Dr Aparna? Any new complication?'

Dr Aparna shook her head and said, ' No complications just a matter of choices.'

Raman smiled and gently kissed Jeeva's head and said, ' And my beautiful wife would have chosen a natural delivery. Am I right Doctor?'

Dr Aparna looked hard at Raman and then threw her hands up in the air and proclaimed, ' I don't know what it is about you and your family, but I am always left feeling a bit weird and strange and I am not sure why I feel that and most certainly don't want to know more about it.'

Jeeva had worried quietly about Labour pains but she did not have to worry too much for both her twins slipped out of her without too much fuss and without too much of a bother.

The doctor delivered both the healthy babies and then stood next to Jeeva, ' That, I must confess must have been the easiest and most painless delivery in history and was the easiest delivery that I have ever handled in my long career and is surely one for the books.'

Wearing a perplexed look, ' Just a couple of hours ago, things had been rather serious and complicated and yet here you are with your children and in all perfect health.

Far away in Perumalvaram, Radhu's eyes slowly flickered open and he slowly began to take in his surroundings and realized that he was in some unknown place and he turned his head and came face to face with the scariest image of all.

Right in front of him, not many feet away, sat a huge lion with the greenest of green eyes and they were staring right into his own eyes.

Fear was something that Radhu was familiar with and it was something that he had dealt with a long time ago and yet here he was filled not only with fear about a beast lounging casually in front of him but also fear about what it was doing and which was talking to him and talking to him in his head.

' Welcome back child and I hope that you make good use of the life that has been bestowed upon you. You are indeed privileged and the first one after many centuries to have been blessed with this precious gift of life and powers.'

Dr.Aparna, Jeeva's gynaecologist came out of the room where she had just finished delivering the twins and looked at all of them and then told Raman, ' Jeeva and your babies are both fine and in perfect health. They are just finishing bathing the newborns and you can go in a few minutes.'

Raman held both the doctor's hands and thanked her warmly.

' Doctor, I have no words with which to thank you and express our gratitude.'

' Raman, honestly, I did nothing and I have to confess that it was the easiest and most boring delivery that I have ever done. If at all you should thank someone, then thank your wife and your twins for they did all the work themselves.'

Jeeva's mother Kamakshi worriedly asked her, ' Doctor, I don't mind what you will think of me or how you will react to this question but I am sorry for I am forced to ask it.'

Dr.Aparna nodded, ' please go ahead and ask me and I will do my best to clear all your doubts. But, before you do that, let me reiterate what I said earlier and which is both Jeeva and the babies are well and without any complications.'

Shaktivel, Valliammai, Manigandan and Raman all looked at Kamakshi and waited for her to ask her question and she did and it was a very valid one.

' Doctor, I am not worried about my daughter and Grandchildren's health but their safety.'

' Safety.I am sorry, Kamakshi amma but I am not sure what you are asking or rather implying with this question?'

Kamakshi ignoring Dr.Aparna's irritation ploughed right into her fear and question, ' Sorry doctor, what I am worried about is our babies getting mixed up with other babies and which I have been told can happen and has been known to have happened.'

Raman realising the relevance in his mother-in-law's question and fears turned and looked pointedly at Dr.Aparna who heaving a sigh of relief replied, ' No need to worry about that at all for we take all the precautions needed to prevent such mix-ups. Both the twin's fingerprints and footprints were taken and they were immediately assigned tags that match the tag that is on Jeeva's wrist. But...'

Raman and both sets of parents went still in anxiety and fear for they like the rest of the world know what the word " BUT" means and that it is a word that is feared and especially now when it was being used by the very doctor who had delivered their babies.

Raman was not one to give in to panic and that too in any situation, however dire it may be and yet he was the one who asked, ' What is it, Doctor?'

Dr.Aparna realising that she had unknowingly given them cause to worry quickly waved her hands and said, ' sorry to have gotten all your pulses going there and I swear that was not my intention.'

She looked at Raman, ' What I was about to say was that the precautions that we have taken to prevent newborns from getting mixed up was unnecessary in your babies case for they carry their own identifications.'

Raman shook his head unable to make sense of the doctor's words and she said, ' By that, I simply meant that both of them are carrying similar birthmarks on their left arms and the marks look eerily similar to the shape of a star.'

The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new. Rajneesh

The nurse stepped out of the room in which Jeeva was in and informed the doctor that the twins had been cleaned and placed in the arms of the mother.

Dr.Aparna asked the nurse about something and Raman's sensitive ears picked up one word and he asked her, ' Doctor, I am sorry to interrupt your conversation but what does the word APGAR mean for I just heard the nurse say that and also something about scale.'

' Raman, The Apgar test is a simple assessment telling doctors your baby’s general condition based on observations in the first moments of life. A newborn's Apgar score helps doctors to decide whether the baby needs any medical help. Apgar is an acronym, standing for the following criteria, Appearance, Pulse (heart rate)

Grimace (reflexes),Activity (muscle tone), Respiration (breathing effort).

A normal Apgar score is 7 to 10 and means a newborn is in good to excellent condition, usually only requiring routine post-delivery care. Babies scoring between 4 and 6 are in fair condition and may require some resuscitation measures. Those with an Apgar score under 4 are in poor condition and need immediate medical attention.'

Raman looked at his mother Valliammai and Dr.Aparna immediately informed him and the others that both the twins scored the maximum and that they were perfect and in the pink of health.

She excused herself saying that she had to prepare for another delivery and left after congratulating all of them.

Raman was bursting with joy and felt like he was levitating and then his father Shaktivel placed a gentle hand on his shoulder and said, ' Iyaa, You go in first and spend some time with her and we will all join you after a few minutes.'

Raman protested, ' no dad. All of you will come with me for we are one and this is a special moment for all of us.'

Valliammai hugged Raman and looked at his eyes with tears of joy dancing in both her eyes, ' Correct. It is indeed a special moment and a moment that should be shared between you four and no one else.'

She pushed him towards the door with a warning smile, ' don't make her wait or she might just decide to come out in search of you and that might turn a bit ugly.'

Kamakshi added, ' Now that is not something we want on this beautiful day. Not now and not ever for Jeeva on a warpath is an ugly and scary sight.'

Raman smiled, ' I have had the pleasure of experiencing that a few times and it is rather scary like you said.'

He looked at all of them and said, ' thank you for everything and thank you for being there for me and Jeeva and the babies.'

He gently gathered three parents in his arms and then bent and gently hugged Jeeva's dad Manigandan who was in the wheelchair and who whispered in his ear, ' Thank you, son. It is me and Kamakshi that must thank you for all that you have done and for being with us through such difficult times.'

Raman looked into his eyes, ' Mani appa, the difficult times are over for our child Suja has come back to us once again and this time she will stay with us forever.'

Manigandan broke down and began to sob like a child and Raman gathered him into his bosom and consoled him as a father would console his son.

He slowly got up and opened the door and went in and only then he realized that he had left behind an old version of himself and that a new version was going to be born the moment........

We all cry, laugh, scream, rave and rant once, twice or several times in our lives. It is almost always for the same reasons that we all humans feel all those emotions and yet it is a unique experience that is one's own and that cannot be described correctly in words, however well one describes it.

Raman left his twin set of parents and entered the room in which his new twins were in, waiting for him and shutting the door behind him, turned happily and looked into the room immediately froze as his eyes took in his soul that was Jeeva and who was not alone for she now had two new souls lying next to her and she looked at him and he looked at her.

She raised her hand and beckoned him, ' Congratulations, baby, for you are now the proud father of two brand new souls.'

There are some moments in life that are forever etched, seared and branded into our memory banks and for Raman, this was one of that.

Raman moved forward feeling the weight of every step that his legs made to reach the bed and then he stopped and standing a foot away, gazed on the twins who lay next to their mother and surprisingly not protesting too much for having been removed from their house where they had lived for nearly ten months and seemed to simply content to be with each other.

Raman slowly sat in the middle of the bed, his eyes still full with their twin babies and Jeeva let him be.

She let him be even when she saw his lips quiver with emotions. She let him be even when she saw his body shake and shiver with conflicting emotions and she let him even when he began to cry like a small child.

Raman gently kissed both the feet of Vijay and Suja and with tears blinding his sight he mumbled to Jeeva, ' they are so small, tiny and so fragile.'

Resting himself with his right arm, Raman cried uncontrollably for a few minutes and then he felt her hand pull him to her and she hugged him tightly to her chest and kissed his face and said, ' My brave man. My hero, my child, my firstborn. Cry, it is okay to cry baby, for you were the only one who stood as wall and singlehandedly faced down all the threats that came our way. Yet, you took all the pain and trauma that starting from Minister Vaidyanathan to those two assassins, Gulab and Jamun threw at you and here you are still standing and still the wall and here we all are under your protection and basking in your light and in your shadows.'

She lifted his face and gently wiped the tears and kissed him and said, ' It breaks my heart to see you cry, sweetheart. Imagine how our parents will react if they see you crying.'

Raman smiled and after gently kissing her went back to staring at their babies.

Bending down to their faces, he breathed out his words from his soul, ' As long as there is breath in me and as long as there is strength left in my limbs, I will protect you from all harm and I will strive to be the best father in this whole world. I promise you this.'

One of the babies lifted its tiny arm and touched Raman's face and then opened its eyes and looked at its father for the very first time and smiled.

Raman kissed the tiny arm and stared at the baby as if he had been hypnotized and Jeeva nudging Raman playfully,' it is obvious isn't it?'

' What is obvious?' Raman asked and Jeeva with a smile, ' It is obvious that your son Vijay recognises you from your voice that he has heard while in the womb and is the first one to connect with you.'

Deep inside the womb, nurtured by its mother the new life sleeps in a trance which is more like the act

of a body in the time of death. But its tiny brain records everything it hears, even if it is not conscious

yet, even if the realisation of its own self and place in the world is far away, quite some time away. But

its brain registers everything and stores it away. Some will come back to haunt and some

will come bringing joy. Like a ray of sunlight on a cold dark day, memories will sometimes come

flooding back and with them will come recognition of love and bonds and of things that we lost in the fire.

The weather over Chennai has been oppressive over the past few days. I heard a weathered man talking about the weather and reporting a depression over the Bay of Bengal and I thought to myself, ' A depression to torment a world already in a deep depression of body, mind and wallet.'

The mornings have been laying over me like a heavy quilt, suffocating to say in the least and it is already October and Gandhi too has waved us goodbye and has receded in the distance and has gone back to his Dandi march stance covered with dried flowers and dried bird crap.

Maybe, he has his eye down to the ground, watching his every step forward for one simple reason and that is bird shit is better than the crap, Politicians spew and spout with wild imagination on the day they come to say hi, thanks and pose while garlanding him.

A simple brave soul is now a symbol for selfies. The poor man does protest silently and yet they pull him down to their levels, come every Republic day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanthi.

2020 is fading and fading fast and even with the arrival of 2021 and a new decade, I doubt if the world will get back to normal or at least the way it was before the arrival of Covid-19.

I feel broken and along with the world feel very disconnected and a sense of foreboding has been slowly creeping up from my soles to clasp its claws around my soul.

So many gone. Good, bad and ugly along with evil, gone and going.

Nothing to do but take the stance of Mahatma and march forward with a resigned resolution and hope things will get better than what it is now.

Even the mornings feel different as I sit on the sands and watch the waves and sea give birth to a new son, sun in its Eastern womb and I feel so for even the waves sound different.

The birds sound different, the air feels different and life itself feels different.

I don't know why but off late I have been looking a lot and around corners, for I feel something is coming.

It matters not if Covid-19 came from Wuhan and came alive from the hands and minds of man or if it came from some animal that was eaten and should not have been eaten but it has arrived and I think this is just a teaser, trailer to the main film.

Trailer ivallavu scarya irukkuna, appo........

" And the writing is still to you, with you, about you, because of you and for you."-Nizar Qabbani

And when my eyes grow old and tired with age

and when they lose the shine and twinkle

I will not fear the looming darkness

and when my ears and hearing grow old and tired with age

and when I start going deaf

i will not fear that I cannot hear

and when I feel and sense our hearts slow in old age

and flutter and tremble as if they were birds

who want to break free of their cages

i will not fear that the time we have is less and less

and when I die and if I should go before you

remember that I will wait as ash, dust, air

and mixed in all the elements

and I will wait when we can be one

once again

for mortals are separate, try however hard

they may to be one

and try however breathlessly to breathe as one

they remain separate and inhabit another body

But in death, we will rise as tendrils

spiral up in tunnels and drift and dance

with every breath that Mother earth takes

and makes and in death

our breaths will be one and in one

Murugan, the proprietor of a coffee shop had been busy all day. Being Saturday, his shop was very crowded and the customers seemed unending.

He had been on his toes since morning. Towards the evening he felt a splitting headache surfacing.

As the clock ticked away, his headache worsened.

Unable to bear it, he stepped out of the shop leaving his staff to look after the sales.

He walked across the street to the Pharmacy to buy himself a painkiller to relieve his headache.

He swallowed the pill and felt relieved. He knew that in a few minutes he would feel better.

As he strolled out of the shop, he casually asked the salesgirl, "Where is Mr. Gopalan, the Chemist? He's not at the cash counter today!"

The girl replied, "Sir, Mr. Gopalan had a splitting headache and said he was going across to your coffee shop. He said a cup of hot coffee would relieve him of his headache."

The man's mouth went dry and he mumbled, "Oh! I see."

This is a typical case of looking outside ourselves for something that we have within us.

How strange, but true!

The Chemist relieves his headache by drinking coffee and the coffee shop owner finds relief in a pain relieving pill!

Similarly, many of us travel across the lengths and breadths of the universe to find peace.

Eventually, we come to realize that real peace is within our own hearts.

*Peace is really a state of mind.*
