I think it really started earnestly with the Gujarat riots (as far as I can remember).

a new show gum hai kisi ke pyar me, on star plus at 8,remake of star jalsa's some show,has a background of mharashtrian family,and has many marathi stars like sanjay narvekarkishori shajhane ,that guru's mom from mnb and some marathi dailogs, bt surprisingly producers ,directors r non marashrians,

some times ekta kapoor used to have marathi stars bt no marathi background ,here entire hero's family is maratha family.

IMHO among the first ones to create sensationalism and controversy way back in 60s used to be kushwant singh ... He single handedly raised the circulation of illustrated weekly to dizzying heights .... Bachi karkaria was an junior apprentice under K.S ... Shobha de rightly said KS wrote with a pen without a condom ...

What is TRPs now was analogous to circulation for weekly magazines then...That is why KS was also the king of malacious and salacious gossip...

I have read all his books and biography later penned by Rahul Singh ( his son and ex editor Readers Digest) ... He clearly brings out that we as indians love gossip and slander, name calling... May be those days it wasn't as prominent and obnoxious as it is now...

If one thing that I absolutely detest about social media in India rn, it is the excessive use of WA.

IMHO

1. Arnab and co didn't decide that it was a murder. Pictures, videos and conspiracy theorists all over social media did that. Arnab gave a platform.

2. Rhea was not victimized. Everything about her was suspicious; her hiring a high paid lawyer to having dozens if that more contacts with drug peddlers.

3. Kangana had her own agenda and she never hid that. The fact still remains that SSR lost quite a few movies because he was an outsider
