Chapter 12

Jodha looks on silently and simply asked “Rukaiyya Begum?”. Hamida Begum said “Woh aisi haalat me nahi hai ki woh apne bacche ko doodh pila sake.” Jodha simply nodded and said “Mujhe Hakim Sahiba ki madat zaroori hogi Ammijaan.” Hamida Begum nods and said to guards to send for Hakim Sahiba. Hakim Sahiba comes and ushers everyone except Moti out of Jodha’s hojra. The baby’s cries continues to echo outside and suddenly becomes silent. Moti comes out and said with a grimaced expression“Mallika E Azam, Hakim Sahiba ne kaha hai ki Jodha bacche ko doodh pila sakti hai.”Everyone except Jalal thank Allah.

Hamida Begum looks at Jalal’s bowed head and Maan Singh’s furious expression and said “Hume pata hai aap logo ko kaafi sawaal honge.” Jalal looks at Hamida Begum and Hamida is shocked to see the furious expression on Jalal’s face. Jalal said in a controlled voice“Aisa lagta hai Marium Makhani ki aapko pata tha ki Rukaiyya Begum mana karne wali thi bacche ko doodh pilane ke liye.” Hamida Begum’s shocked expression pacifies Jalal to an extent that she did not know about Rukaiyya’s attitude. Hamida Begum said “Nahi Jalal, humare man me kabhi ye shak aaya nahi tha, ki Rukaiyya Begum kabhi bacche ko doodh pilane se inkar kar sakti hai.” Jiji Anga then asked “Phir Mallika aapne Jodha Begum se bacche ko doodh pilane kaise kiya? Woh toh pait se bhi nahi thi.” Hamida Begum then said “Jiji Anga, aapko pata hai ki humare yahan riwaaz tha ki bacche ke Ammi ko kuch ho jaaye toh phir bhi ki bacche ko ek Ammi ka paushtik doodh mil jaaye uske liye hum kisi aur ko bhi chunte hai.”

Maan Singh said “Maaf kijiye Mallika par hum samjhe nahi.” Mallika then elaborates and then said “Jaise Jalal ke janam ke waqt, humne Maham ko chuna kyunki humare garbvati hone ke baad woh hi ek aisi aurat jo humare garbvati ke mahino sirf ek hafte me fark rakhti thi. Agar hume kuch ho jaata janam dete waqt, toh who ek Maham hi thi jo Jalal ko pehla paushtik doodh de sakti thi. Humne bhi wahi tareeka aazmaya yahan par.” Maan Singh said “Par buasa garbvati thi hi nahi phir kaise.”

Hamida said “Hum jaante hai Maan Singh, par Rukaiyya ke aas paas ke garbvati hone ke aas paas hume koi aur garbvati stree Agra me nahi mili thi. Agra ke bahar ke logo me se hum nahi chahthe the, kyuki isse bacche ko koi zeher bhi de sakta tha ya Rukaiyya ko.Jab humne Hakim Sahiba se baat kiya tha, toh Hakim Sahiba ne hume bataya ki kuch dawai ke asar se ek aurat bina garbvati hote hua bhi apne bacche ko doodh pila sakti hai. Salima Begum aur Jodha Begum, dono Begumo ko yeh baat batayi gayi thi aur dono yeh baat maan bhi gaye ki agar Rukaiyya Begum ko khuda na kaasta kuch ho gaya toh woh dono me se koi ek, bacche ko doodh pilayenge. Hum sirf yeh intezaam rakha tha agar Rukaiyya Begum ko kuch hua toh. Maan Singh, humare dimaag me kabhi yeh baat aayi hi nahi Rukaiyya kabhi doodh denese mana kar sakti hai. Hume laga janam dene me aur bhi samay hoga isliye humne Salima Begum ko ijazat de thi ki woh apni chachi se milne ke liye Kabul ja sakti hai. Agar humara bas chalta toh hum Salima Begum se hi pehle keh dete.Lekin Salima Begum aaj yahan nahi hai, aur bacche ko zyada der bukh rakhna bhi uske sehat ke liye haanikarak ho sakta hai. Isliye humne Jodha Begum se inteja ki, ki woh abhi iss waqt Rukaiyya ke bacche ko doodh pilaye.”

Maan Singh is unsure on how to respond. On one side, what Hamida Begum did is right. It is not unheard of women dying in pregnancy as a result of which Royal households arrange for this possibility by making another pregnant lady stay with them for the time period the child needs the mother’s milk or using medicines to induce milk in another women’s body. But he does not know how at Amer, his Dadisa, Badi Ranisa, Jodha's mother will react. He knows if any of his family members come to know, then there can be trouble as in the Rajput tradition it is only the mother who has to give the milk first and no other lady can give her milk to the baby when the mother is alive. He does not know what to do. Whether to inform his family members or not.

Jalal looks lost in his thoughts.No one could discern what he is thinking. Moti came out and said “Hakim Sahiba ne kaha hai ki aap logo andar aa sakte hai.” Everyone goes back inside the hojra. Jodha is looking tired but her eyes shows with happiness as she slowly hums a lullaby to the sleeping baby in her arms. Hamida Begum sits beside her on the bed and said “Shukriya Jodha beta.” Jodha smiles at her but her eyes immediately go back to the baby and she said absent mindedly “Yeh mera farz tha Ammijaan. Bacche ko doodh pilana ek maa ka farz hi toh hota hai.” And everyone’s hearts break in that instant as they finally realize what Jodha started feeling for the baby.

Jalal clears his throat and said to others “Hume lagta hai ki hume Jodha Begum ko todhi der akele chodna chahiye. Bacche ko aaj ke liye Jodha Begum ke saath rehne dete hai.” Everyone agreed and slowly everyone left the hojra. At the last Jalal leaves. He turns to see Jodha still staring at the baby oblivious to the world and his eyes fill with something, he never thought he would feel before. Tears. Jodha then looks up and her eyes widen seeing the tears and Jalal’s heartbroken expression. She opens her mouth to say something but Jalal left. Now she is left with a question. Why did Jalal have tears?

The next day,

Jalal walks into Jodha’s hojra and stays silent seeing the scene in front of her. Jodha is walking from one side to another, silently humming a lullaby as she coddles the baby to herself.Looking at Jalal, she puts a finger on her lips indicating silence. Jalal nods and enters the hojra. Jodha silently nods her head. Jalal coming beside her looks at the baby and feels his heart beat for the first time. Jodha watches as Jalal admires his child’s face, expressions of awe being prominently present on his face. Jodha said softly “Abhi Abhi soyi hai. Iski parchayi bilkul aap par gayi hai Shahenshah.” Jalal looks at Jodha his eyebrow raised and asked “Yeh aap kaise keh sakti hai Jodha Begum?”. Jodha said “Jaisi woh doodh ke liye maangti hai apni pukar se, waisi maang toh aap bhi karte hai jab apko zoro se bhookh lagti hai.” Jalal looks on as Jodha struggles silently. He goes back to looking at the baby. Jodha said “Aap isse pakadna chahenge.” Jalal looks at her in shock. He looks at his hands, which were so rough and covered with calluses and he looks at the softness of the baby. Jalal shook his head and said “Aap hi isse pakade Jodha Begum.” Jodha nods her head and said gives a small sound of pain. The baby stirs in her arms but doesn’t wake up. Jalal looks at Jodha and asks in an urgent voice, “Kya hua Jodha Begum?”. Jodha said “Lagta hai humare gardhan me moch aa gayi hai.” Jalal asked “Hum Moti ko bulate hai.” Jodha shook her head and said “Nahi, aap shehzadi ko pakad lijiye todhi der ke liye.Gardhan thik hi jayegi apne aap.” Jalal starts to protest, when Jodha immediately held out the baby to him. Jalal looks at the baby properly for the first time. And he found no fault in Jodha’s words. Her face structure matches his along with her nose. Yet, somewhere he could find similarities of Jodha in the curve of the mouth and in the way the face is scrunched in expression. The baby looks ready to open her mouth in a cry, when Jalal curved his arm around the baby, supporting the baby’s body by placing it on the whole of his arm and supporting her head with his other hand. Jalal slowly shooshes, patting the baby and the baby slowly calms down. Jodha said “Lagta hai, aapki hi beti banegi. Pitaah ki ladli.” Jalal looks at Jodha with an ectastic expression. Jodha smiles and Jalal asked “Aapki moch.”

Jodha said “Thik ho gaya.” Jalal said “Aap natak kar rahi thi na?”. Jodha shook her head clutching her neck and said “Nahi toh, hume sach me moch aa gayi thi.” But Jodha said this with a smile and Jalal shook his head in fond exasperation. Jodha then asked “Ab Rukaiyya Begum kaisi hai?”. Jalal’s mood immediately turned serious. He said“Hum unse milne nahi gaye. Hum yahaan par aa gaye.” Jodha said “Aap ko unke paas jana chahiye Shahenshah. Who abhi abhi ek daur se guzar chuki hai. Aapki Sahere ki zaroorat hogi unhe.” Jalal looks at her and said “Kal ke baare me pata hone ke bavjood aap yeh keh rahi hai Jodha Begum.” Jodha said “Jo bhi hua Shahenshah, abhi Rukaiyya Begum ek maa hai aur koi bhi maa apne bacche ko kabhi kosthi nahi hai. Hume pura yakeen hai jo hua, Rukaiyya Begum ne sagme me aake kahaan hoga. Aapko unse milna chahiye.” Jalal looks at Jodha saying nothing. On one side, he is awed by Jodha’s optimism which never faded yet on the other side he knew Rukaiyya. Rukaiyya was a person who never went back on her word on her impression of the person. If she likes the person, she will like the person, and if she hates, she will hate with a full heart. Yet, he could not find the heart to tell Jodha Begum this,because if Rukaiyya Begum accepts the child, then Jodha Begum will lose the child. And she is already attached to the child, standing beside him just to caress the child’s cheek or adjust the blanket around her when 9 months before,she wouldn’t have bothered even being in the same room as him. Yet, these nine months bought a lot of difference in their relationship. Where, there was ego,now there is respect.

For that respect, Jalal agrees to go and see Rukaiyya immediately after meeting Jodha. Stepping out of Jodha’s hojra, he sees Salima Begum and does adaab. Salima also gives him the adaab and said “Ab bacche ki tabiyat kaise hai Shahenshah?”. Jalal said “Jodha Begum unka khayal rakh rahi hai Salima Begum. Kya aap humare saath Rukaiyya Begum ke hojre tak tashrif kar sakti hai?”. Salima agrees. And they walk together. Salima said “Kya hua Shahenshah, aap bade khoye hua se lag rahe hai? Lagta hai koi gehri soch me hai aap?”. Jalal nods his head and said “Marium Makhani ne aapko bataya hoga ki kal raat ko kya hua?”. Salima nods her head. Jalal said “Aap jaanthi ki hum Doodh ke karz ko bohut maante hai or yeh humare rivaazo me sabse bada maana jaata. Lekin jo kal hua uske nateeje ke baare me hum soch rahe hai?”. Salima said “Hum samajhe nahi.” Jalal said “ Ek Hindu ne ek Musalman bacche ko apna doodh diya hai. Agar Rukaiyya zinda nahi hoti toh phir bhi uski maafi ki jaati hai lekin Rukaiyya zinda hai, aur dono Musalmaan aur Hindu, Doodh dene ka haq sirf ek Ammi ko hota hai. Marium Makhani ne bhale hi yeh faisle samajhdhari se liya hai, lekin iss faisle ka asar Rukaiyya aur Jodha dono par hoga. Agar kal maulvi ya Hindu pandit ne humare saamne aake yeh sawaal pucha ki humne kyu ek Begum ke zinda hote hua, dusre Begum ko doodh dene ka haq diya toh hum kya jawaab denge?”

Salima stays silent for sometime and said “Jo mai kehna wali hu, woh aap sunena pasand nahi karenge Shahenshah.” Jalal said “Aap humare saamne bekhauf hokar keh sakti hai hai Salima Begum. Kya humari soch galat hai?”. Salima shook her head in a negative and said “Nahi Shahenshah, aap ki soch galat nahi par woh soch nahi jo zaroorat hai”. Jalal asked “Hum samjhe nahi?”. Salima said “Aap ek Shahenshah ke tarah soch rahe hai. Aur aapko ek Shahenshah nahi, ek waalid hokar sochna hoga. Toh ek Abbu hokar sochiye, kya aap khush hai?”. Jalal said without hesitance “Ha, hum khush hai ki humari beti hui hai.”. Salima shrugs her shoulder and said “Toh phir koi maulvi ya pandit iss khushi ke saamne ka chahiye kyuki unhe aane ka haq nahi hai. Insaan aur khushiyo ke beech me aana koi bhi dusre insaan ka haq nahi hai chahe woh mazabhi ho ya rishtedaar. Aur jahaan Rukaiyya aur Jodha Begum ki baat hai, toh Jodha Begum Rahim ki choti Ammijaan ban chuki hai toh iss bacchi ka kyu nahi?”. Jalal smiles and nods his head. By then they reach Rukaiyya’s hojra and Jalal indicates Salima to go with him.

Reaching inside, both of them look shocked seeing Rukaiyya already dressed with elegance. Looking at Jalal,she smiles and said “Arre Jalal, aap yahaan? Aaj humari yaad kaisi aayi?”.Salima said “Mubarak ho Rukaiyya Begum, aapki beti ko saari khushiya mile aur Allah uski har murad ko puri kare.” The next words, shock Jalal and Salima. Rukaiyya said “Beti?Kaunsi Beti? Meri koi baccha nahi hai.”
