Movies in which all the songs are good?

In the last decade, I have seldom come across movies in which all the songs or at least 80% of the songs are good. Those which come to mind are Dil Chahta hain, Mission Kashmir, Bunty aur Babli (Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy seem to be the common factor). Most of the time, there will be just one or two good songs in a movie (if at all). Movies like OSO, Saavariya etc come in this category for me.
There was a time (what we call the Golden Era) when each movie had so many good or EXCELLENT songs that it was a real exercise to choose one favourite song. Take these examples: Guide, Kala Bazaar, Tere Ghar Ke Saamne, Jewel Thief, Amar Prem, Ghar, Aandhi, Kati Patang, Yaadon ki Baraat and so on.
The number of songs in a movie has not gone down over the years. But the number of good songs in a movie has certainly gone down. If a music director manages to make one good song for a movie, he promptly makes two-three versions of the same song in order to fill a CD.
Ironically, this dearth of good songs is happening at a time when the industry is exploding with good singers coming in from scores of talent shows. Today, a music director couldn't have it better. He doesn't have to wait for one Lata or one Rafi - he can get 100s of Sonu Nigams, Sunidhi Chauhans and Alka Yagniks. But where is the music?

As far as good music is concerned (as per sahanas post) its one that has a capability to carry itself for next ten yrs.....lets take the list provided above... do u feel all the songs hv that capacity? (Plz dnt take me wrong...they r not bad and few r my hot favs too) Now take the music of Bombay..we still remember it with nostalgia. What sahana asked i would say, true this is something we used to see regularly in the golden era songs. SDBurman, salilda, RDBurman, and many others, they all gave few albums where each and every song was hit then and are still recalled with nostalgia and love. this is something that is missing from present day albums. ARR has few such album among the contemporary MD's.but reast U will hv few tracks that would fall under such catagory....not all.

Sahana,
I am also a big fan of the golden era but let me play devil's advocate here and see if I can list some movies from the last decade or slightly over which would fit the category.

Saathiya
Bombay
Roja
Rangeela
Dil Se
Takshak
Maachis
Satya
Parineeta
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam
Fanaa
Yuva
Rang de basanti
Main Hoon Na
Kabhi Alvida na Kehna
Kal ho na ho
Jeans
Tehzeeb
Aa ja nachle
Agni Varsha
Khamoshi

Not all of the above had great songs but they would fall into the very good or good category, at least.

Very good list Ashish... 👏

Let me add few more:

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Dil toh pagal hain (Here I would say all songs were different and really good ones according to me)
Raaz (The new one... This is one of my fav album..)
Qayamat se Qayamat tak
Jo jeeta wahi sikander
and the one which all forgot - Dilwaale dulhaniya le jaayenge...
Veer Zaara (Though the songs were composed by Madan Mohan, it was still refined by his son.. )
Khoya Khoya Chand (Though all songs were a copy of old songs, the music is pleasing)

****Editing More****

Devdas
Taal
Guru
The first movie of Vishal Shekhar - Jhankaar Beats which has melodious numbers...

I agree with you... We cannot categorize any form of art as good or bad... "Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder"..

If one does not like Himesh, then that does not mean "Himesh is a bad composer or singer"... He is liked by millions of people and has his own fan base who like his composition... Haan woh mere ko bhi pasand nahin hain, yeh alag baat hain par woh jo bhi ho, hit hain 😉

We may say these songs may not be remembered after 10 years, but one never knows... People may like to listen to them even after 50 odd yrs because for them it maybe a good song...

Good ones ashish & Anu...but i think again we r coming down to personal choices. 😆

Ok let me take one..the album Thakshak. Can we remember all the songs? No we dnt though we all know it had really good scores. But now think about abhiman or say aradhna.

Does it comes down to personal choice....it is always possible that fans of Himesh may remember his songs long even after 10 yrs. but will the mass do so?? But when it comes to songs like Abhimaan majority remembers them. There actually lies the diff.

One more interesting point here....go thru the list posted and u all would find max r by ARR. Whats wrong with other MD's.

Hi Ashish, good list but again for me, there are just one or two songs in some of the albums and nil in most.

In Dil Se it is "Chaiyya Chhaiyya" and "Ai ajnabi tu bhi kabhi". Can't bear "jiya jale" because of Lata's past-her-prime voice. In Maachis it is "Chhapa chappa charkha chale" and "Chod aaye hum". In Yuva it is just "Kabhi neem neem". In Rang de Basanti, it is just the title song. In Hum dil de chuke sanam, it is just "Dholi taro" and "Tadap tadap"

OK I will give in for KANK and KHNH, so looks like Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy are the only ones who work for me with more than 2 likeable songs per movie.

Still, there are not enough songs in one movie for me to buy the whole CD. On the other hand, when I look at the CDs that fill my rack, they are of movies like Madhumati, Naya Daur and others I listed before where I feel like listening to each song endlessly - they literally feed my soul.

Good topic!

Very true, There are hardly any movies with several hit/good songs. Even if there are, it may not be to your liking. Perhaps that is the reason companies came up with cd's with collection of hit songs from different films. Now they have come up with 4/6 films in one cd.I generally find these kind of cd's more enjoyable because you have at least 5-7 good songs to your liking in one cd and also save the hassle to keep on changing cd every 5 min.
