Chapter 18
Beginner Strings
Ms. Julie was the first to greet Piya on her first day, presenting her with a platter of freshly baked blueberry muffins. Piya gladly took one and bit into it, relishing the delicate flavors. A light breakfast like this was a good start to her morning.
âThese are really nice, Ms. Julie. Thank you.â
âItâs my pleasure, dear.â She noticed Abhay standing outside. âWould your friend like one as well?â
Piya followed her eyes and landed on Abhay as well, who was engaged in a phone call. She nodded and took one more, packing it away in her lunch bag.
âIâll give it to him later. He looks busy.â
She wasnât sure if he would eat it. Did he even like muffins? What did he like? She didnât even know what his favorite dishes were.
I really donât know much about him, do I? Even after all this time, he still doesnât tell me anything about himself. Yet he knows so much about me.
Mr. Dâ Souza arrived from his office at the next minute, taking a muffin for himself and thanking Ms. Julie with a smile. She smiled back and went back to her work. He turned to Piya.
âGood morning, Piya. Ready for your first day?â
âMore than ever,â she beamed.
âThatâs the spirit. Follow me.â
Piya was given an extensive tour of the school, as well as formal introductions with the faculty and staff. Mr. DâSouza conducted the tour with much pride and energy, looking much better from the last time she saw him. No loud sneezes or sniffles. She noticed that he liked to twirl his mustache a lot while talking.
âHereâs your classroom.â He pushed the door open to find the other two instructors already inside.
âThere you two are. I didnât see you in the faculty room.â He turned to Piya. âPiya, this is Divya, our beginner strings teacher.â
Divya was hunched over a small bookcase, one hand reaching down behind it and one foot hanging in the air. She looked up in surprise to the sudden noise and bumped her head against a mounted shelf on the wall. She was a little shorter and a little chubbier than Piya was.
âAnd this is Raunak. Like yourself, he is also a teaching assistant.â
The tall, curly-haired gentleman walked up to Piya, ignoring the plight of the clumsy colleague behind him. He smiled and held out his hand. Piya took it readily and shook.
âLooking forward to working with you, Piya.â
âSame here.â She looked over his shoulder to Divya. Her round glasses were just about to fall off, barely hanging onto either ear. She adjusted herself and pushed them back up with her finger, emerging with some papers that had fallen behind the bookcase. She pushed the bookcase back and dusted her palms.
âI am so sorry. This is so unprofessional of me.â She hurried over to Piya, clutching the mess of papers to her chest. âNice to meet you. I swear Iâm not always like this.â
âItâs okay. Are you alright?â
She nodded, slightly out of breath.
âTheyâll take care of you from here on out. But youâre always welcome to see to me if you need anything. My office is just down the hall.â
âThank you, sir.â
He nodded with confidence in Piyaâs ability and left the classroom. Divya took a sigh of relief and put her hands on Piyaâs shoulders.
âIâm so glad we have another set of hands. These class sizes just keep growing by the day.â
âHow many students usually come?â
âRecently weâve had groups of 10 to 15 students. But a lot of them donât stick around for all of the lessons. Depends on the day.â
âFirst day will always be at the highest count. Might as well be prepared.â
There was an hour to go before classes began for the day, leaving time for Piya to learn some of the ropes. Divya and Raunak took turns explaining the syllabus to Piya, what their teaching styles were, and what her expected duties were. While Divya did the main teaching, Piya and Raunak were to help with demonstrations and individual questions and troubles.
The beginner strings classes at the DâSouza School of Music were held every Saturday. A total of three sections, separated by age. One for 6-10 years olds, another for 11-15, and the last for 16-18. The adult classes had separate teachers.
Divya played the cello, and Raunak the violin. Divya used to be a member of the Symphony Orchestra of India for a few years, before she came back to Dehradun to teach. Raunak was in the final year of his undergraduate studies, at a different university. He was a part of his universityâs symphony orchestra, and worked here part-time. Both of them took lessons here when they first started out.
âI hear kids.â Raunak noted, leaning his ear towards the front door.
Piya stood up and peeked outside the small window affixed in the door, to see a few kids waiting patiently with their instruments and parents in tow. Divya peeked over her shoulder.
âArenât they just the cutest?â Divya gushed.
The group was let in a few minutes later. They stood clueless in terms of seating arrangements, which required the teachers to help sort out. It was a decently varied group, about 5 cellos, 6 violins, and 4 violas.
The parents helped situate their children and exited the room promptly after exchanging their goodbyes and greeting the teachers. There was one girl in particular who came hand in hand with Ms. Julie instead. She kept to herself as the other kids started talking and mingling with each other. Piya took notice.
She looks shy.
The class began by getting all the kids to settle down, starting with introductions of the instructors. They showed each of the three instruments and taught their names. This was followed by each child saying their own name, age, and what instrument they were learning. They started with the cellos in the back and went around the room, winding back to the front.
The last of the cellos either didnât have a clue as to what was going on, or wasnât paying attention, and subsequently yelled out his name followed by âbig violinâ. He was 8.
Divya sighed. Piya and Raunak were trying not to laugh.
âItâs called a cello, Vansh.â
âOops, cello. Got it.â
The girl who had come with Ms. Julie went at the very end, and said her name in a low whisper.
âHoratia.â
She definitely stood out to the other kids in weird way. Some of them wouldnât even interact with her. An invisible bubble surrounded her, creating a separation between her and the rest.
Piya felt bad and gave her a smile, which seemed to help lift her spirits. She wouldnât keep her eyes off Piya for the rest of the lesson.
The focus of todayâs lesson was just to get familiar with the instruments of their choosing; the different parts of the instrument and how to take care of it. The kids were well behaved, and looked excited to go home and practice what they had learned, once the lesson ended.
âSo how was it?â Divya asked, opening a bottle of water. The lid slipped from her fingers and fell to the floor. Her chair almost lurched over in an effort to reach the cap that was now under the seat, but she caught herself. They had an hour lunch break before the next groupâs class began. âYou fit into the role really well, I must say. Exceeded my expectations.â
âIt was really nice. The kids are very sweet.â
The experience made Piya happy, and distracted her from the other chaotic aspects of her life.
âThat they are.â She smiled. âWell, we have an hour for lunch. Letâs go eat.â
Piya nodded, feeling the onset of hunger herself, and stepped out with them. But she also wanted to check on Abhay first. She told him earlier he could leave and come back to get her later, and that she would be safe here, but she highly suspected he stayed behind. Like he had nowhere else to be.
âIâll be back. Iâll catch up with you both in a few minutes.â
They nodded and walked to the break room, Piya making hasty steps towards the front lobby. She peered out the window, brushing the lace drapes aside with the tips of her fingers.
She was correct. His car was still parked outside the building. He sat on the marble benches near the fountains, still on the phone. She was jealous of whoever he was speaking to; he never talked to her that much. Maybe it was office related.
So stubborn.
ââââââââââââââââââââââ
Horatia was having second thoughts about her decision to pick up music. There had to be another way to go about her plans. Her amount of interaction with anything in this realm remained close to nothing. Communicating with kids was the worst way she could possibly start off.
She couldnât help it. She might be hundreds of years old, but physically, she looked like a normal 10 year old.
These kids were loud and chatty, but because of that, they made friendships very easily. Horatia struggled to even open her mouth. She didnât understand how or where to begin. She sat in the corner of the violins section, hoping no one would notice her.
Everyone settled down as soon as the three teachers began to direct their attention. Piya was the first to notice Horatiaâs discomfort and smiled in her direction, as they introduced themselves to the class. It did make her feel a little better.
Youâre the reason Iâm here.
She kept her eyes locked on Piya, trying to make sense the pull she felt towards this city and this girl. That pull brought her here, to this class, amongst all these mortals.
Horatia knew this pull was meant to guide her, to make her a catalyst towards some future that involved Piya. A small role to play, but a role that set the stage for the events to come. Her powers would be needed eventually. She was sent here to fulfill that role.
I wish I knew exactly why.
ââââââââââââââââââââââ
âMs. Julie, can I ask you something?â
âOf course, dear. What is it?â
âThat girl in the morning class, Horatia, do you know her?â
Piya became increasingly perplexed about the girl for some reason. Perhaps it was out of sympathy. She thought she was related to Ms. Julie, though she lacked resemblance. She looked more like a foreigner.
âAh the quiet one. Sheâs from a nearby orphanage. One of the caretakers there saw her interest in music and enrolled her here on her wishes. They plan to just drop her off and have me take responsibility on school grounds.â
Piya found it strange that they wouldnât just come inside themselves.
âIs that so?â
Ms. Julie nodded. âI donât know much else about her though. She hasnât said much since she got here.â
She reached behind her counter and gave Piya a small pouch.
âWhatâs this?â
âA small gift from me. For a successful first day. Theyâre flower seeds. Iâm not sure if you like to garden but I have too many of these myself.â
âItâs never too late to start. Thank you.â
âOf course. Iâll see you next week.â
Piya waved to her on the way out to find Abhay standing next to his car. Either he really did stay put after she checked on him, or he was extremely punctual.
She put her investigator hat on.
âDid you stay here the entire time?â
âNo.â
Piyaâs eyes narrowed. Even his eyes couldnât absolve him of guilt.
Liar.
Abhay listened in on her mental accusation and tried to make himself look less obvious, holding open the passenger door. It wasnât convincing to her.
âYou know, I can always ask Ms. Julie if your car was here. Sheâll tell me the truth.â Piya put her foot back, sliding closer to the door, her fingers just barely grazing the handle.
âPiya, letâs go. Itâs getting late.â
âLate? Itâs only 3 pm.â
Abhay sighed. Piya knew she got him cornered. She gave him a smug smile and laughed at his expense. She walked over and sat in the car.
Once they were safely on the road, Piya offered him the muffin she packed away for him. He wrinkled his nose and flat out refused it.
âI donât like muffins.â
âAre you sure? Itâs very yummy.â She pushed it closer to his face. âMaybe itâll change your opinion?â
âI rather not.â
His stomach was guaranteed to not handle human food well. Getting past his tongue would be a feat in itself. It all tasted more bitter than the blackest coffee there ever was. Vile. Disgusting.
âSuit yourself. More for me then.â She placed it back in her lunch bag, watching the street lights fly by.
âHow did the class go?â
âIt was nice. Teaching has its own enjoyment. The kids were motivated too.â
âThatâs nice to hear.â
The topic of music reminded Abhay that he had her voice recorder in the glove compartment of his car, having put it there earlier this morning with the intention of returning it to itâs rightful owner.
He wanted to keep it. But it belonged to her.
The villa came into view sooner than he wouldâve liked. Piya stepped out of the car as soon as he turned off the engine.
âBye. Iâll see you Monday.â
She began to walk away. Her sudden speed forced him to react. He reached for the recorder and called her name. If he didnât return it now, he knew he never would.
âPiya...â
She stopped in her tracks, feeling tingles down her spine. She liked how her name sounded from his lips.
âYou...left this in the car a few days ago.â
Piya turned around and saw the recorder in his hand, his arm outstretched towards her. She could see his reluctance to part with it. She smiled and shook her head. She knew he wanted to keep it. It belonged to him anyways.
âItâs yours. A gift from me.â
The hue of his icy grey eyes became brighter, as if they were smiling on his behalf.
âAre you sure?â
She sighed and sat back inside the car, taking the recorder from his hand and shoving it into his shirt pocket, pressing her palm firmly over it.
âAbsolutely.â She lifted her finger. âIâll break it in front of you if you try returning it again.â
Abhay felt a surge of warmth travel through his body, the strongest where her hand lay. Her touch brought comfort. Their eyes met without intention, continuing their conversation without words. Her cheeks turned pink.
Did you like it?
It was perfect.

Chapter 19
Edelweiss
She travelled to a large hill at the dead of night, carrying a fistful of seeds in one hand, a small bottle of water in the other. Gusty winds weaved through the foliage, knocking leaves off their branches. Some tangled themselves into her hair.
This hill had a gradual incline to flat land at the top, barren and devoid of life, horribly contrasting with the beautiful, aged trees and shrubs around it. The soil quality wasnât the best for most things to grow into, but these seeds, they found it the most ideal.
It would be wrong to say that coming here alone wasnât foolish. But she didnât want to succumb to those fears. If she did, she would never be able to leave the villa ever again. The forest was her friend. How could she fear it? It protected her. Just like her guardian angel.
Her choice of footwear made the climb more difficult than it needed to be. They lacked proper grip. Small chunks of dirt and pebbles broke off the sides and rolled to the bottom, collapsing into crumbles. She gripped the trunks of trees to keep her balance, climbing to the near top with firm steps. She picked a flat enough spot, grinding her knees into the drab earth, and dropped a few seeds into small pockets she had created with her fingers. The sunlight was sure to shine the brightest here, just as intensely as the moonlight was right now. The entire sky was visible from here.
Perfect for stargazing, she thought.
The pouch that held the seeds came with a small card that listed the kind of flower and a small photo. She did her own research afterwards, finding this place perfect to start growing them.
Edelweiss. A flower that stood for courage and devotion. A flower that could thrive and bloom in even the most harshest of environments.
These seeds were from Ms. Julie. She, in turn, received them from her daughter, who lived in Switzerland, where these flowers were known to grow. Piya accepted them without second thought, wanting to add something of her own to this forest.
Who knows, maybe youâll like them too?
Her palms pulled in the soil over the seeds, to cover them. A few pats to flatten the land and it was ready to be watered. She dusted her soiled palms before tilting the now open bottle of water over the planted area. She made a mental note to buy a small watering can at some point.
âPerfect,â she whispered.
The wind picked up with twice the speed for a brief moment, startling her. Her hand immediately touched the back of her neck, a light shiver traveling down her spine. Shivers that reminded her of him. That feeling, that fleeting presence. She stood up and looked around, the cobalt eyes missing from the surroundings.
Yet she felt like he was there. Watching over her.
Just like Abhay.
Abhay kept his distance. He didnât want her to see him in this form again. Each time she did, it became harder and harder to leave. Just a few minutes ago, he was in his room with a book in hand, but his senses informed him of her presence nearby. Out of worry, he went to check on her. He held his palms out on either side and created thick shadows to surround the area, hiding the two of them from any lurkers.
You know this isnât safe, Piya.
He wanted to scold her for being out in the forest this late. Why didnât she understand that this place was dangerous? She would gain nothing out of being here. Abhay lamented her foolishness in the matter and kept a sizable distance between them, hiding behind a tree. He finally took note of her actions. She was planting something.
She pushed a stick into the ground, where the seeds were, as a marker. She then dusted off her knees, carefully walking down to the bottom of the hill, and turning back the way she came.
Abhay remained at a distance, walking back with her to ensure her safe passage home. Even with the added darkness he created, she glowed as bright as the moon. It looked and felt real, the soft whitish-yellow light that emanated from her. It was something only he could see, something only he could feel. Its energy called out to him.
His pace doubled. That craving, the yearning for the light she carried, he wanted to understand it. It couldnât be his imagination.
The darkness wanted the firefly to stay. In the pitch black that surrounded them, she was all he could see. All he could ever want.
Once again, they reached the area just behind her villa, where they saw each other for the first time. Piya stopped walking.
I know youâre here.
Abhay stopped, her thoughts sounding like she had spoken them. She turned around, looking back at the forest behind her, and walked in his immediate direction.
Her intuition led her to him like a compass. And just like the other times they met, all she could see of his features were his eyes. Her fingers locked themselves around his wrist, before he got a chance to run away.
He felt very much real. Not a figment of her imagination, nor a sign of insanity.
Piya.....
Something new was felt between the two tonight, a sensation that words couldnât do justice to. His body emanated a glow of its own, of a darker purple shade. It met with hers in an overpowering synergy, entwining with each other like leaves on a vine.
Their souls finally met for the first time, the recognition instantaneous. They fell prisoner to the whims of these spirits, forgetting the affairs of the world around them and just focusing on each other. Abhay remembered Siddharthâs words.
â....she could be your soulmate...â
His fingers found themselves entangled in her hair, combing out the leaves that made their home there. She shivered as his fingers gently brushed against her nape. They felt oddly warm this time.
âWonât you say anything? You talk to me in my dreams, then why not in real life?â
She remembered the last dream, the kiss, and how he vanished when she took Abhayâs name. It was time to see his reaction in reality.
âAbhay.....â
She felt the slightest twitch in his wrist, breaking free from her prison. He vanished into the night once again, leaving Piya with a conviction that he was someone she knew.
She wouldnât know how to feel if she was wrong.
âââââââââââââââââââââââ
Final preparations for Doon Universityâs annual charity fair had officially gone underway. With classes cancelled for the day, students were free to use their time on campus to ready their booths and offerings for the event.
Piya, Kabir, and several other music students gathered around in the concert hall, working out a schedule of performances. The university orchestra had their own performance planned an hour after all the solos and duets, to give ample to time to setup stage and warmup. Misha and Ruhi were helping with the setup of the arts exhibition in the largest studio on campus. T was just busy touching up her makeup in the main quad, taking selfies of herself in front of some rose bushes. Although she was studying film, she had little knowledge of cinematography and her directing skills were shoddy at best. Yet she demanded the directorâs position and lead role in the play that the film and theatre students were producing, a rendition of Shakespeareâs Romeo and Juliet.
All they lacked was a Romeo. Thatâs the lie the others told her. In reality, everyone involved in the production ran their auditions and rehearsals without her, and played around on her whims when she actually was there. She wanted all the credit without putting in the effort.
Abhay had the misfortune of becoming her idea of a perfect Romeo. He was on campus as a trustee, to oversee the final preparations, and to keep an eye on Piya.
Losing control came to him as a temptress, begging him to give into the desire just this once. He wanted make T feel all the hatred and disgust he had towards her. The manifestation would be ghastly, but he was curious to know what exactly it would turn into. He held himself back after much thinking.
âPlease, Abhay? For me?â
âI believe I told your single braincell, no.â
âBut Abhay.....â She enunciated his name in a irritating drawl, cozying up to him. âJust think about it. Itâll be so romantic.â
He chuckled, shoving his hands in his pockets. âI believe you mean tragic. Which, in my mind, describes you perfectly.â
âExcuse me?!â
His sharp glare caused her to flinch. His patience was wearing thin.
âYou are excused.â He waved his hand behind him. âKindly do me a favor and disappear for me.â
Persistent was Tâs middle name. He continued walking, but she kept following him.
Piya was out in the hallways, on her way back to the concert hall after making copies of some papers. She saw Abhay walking side by side with T, the former being pestered relentlessly by the latter, and decided to save his poor life for once. If he could protect her, she could protect him too. A bold statement for such a small problem, but anyone could use protection from T. Her personality was rather nasty. Piya changed her path to intentionally run into them, acting as if she were looking for him.
âAbhay, there you are. Siddharth was looking for you.â
Siddharth? He left already......
Siddharth was certainly with him earlier, but had to leave for the office soon after. They came in separate cars anticipating this.
Piyaâs less than friendly expression towards T became more evident to him.
âWhat are you thinking? Letâs go.â She urged.
Abhay nodded, having realized her motives. T shrunk back on her own and glared back at her, but Piya didnât care. She didnât like it when she touched Abhay.
They reached the other side of campus, before saying another word. Piya was especially flustered. She felt strange while standing next to him. Blood rushed to her head, coloring her whole face red. Her heart took off like a galloping horse and her lips were trembling. Something definitely changed between the last time she saw him and now.
She distracted herself by starting a conversation, suppressing a stammer. âSheâs really annoying, isnât she? What was she talking to you about?â
âNothing. She wants me to participate in her play.â
âOh, I heard about that. Romeo and Juliet right?â
He nodded.
âI thought they already had the full cast. And the fair is tomorrow. Did she really expect you to learn everything by then?â
âThat would require using something called intelligence, something she doesnât have.â
Piya buried a laugh with her palm. Even his insults were well-articulated.
âWell my job here is done. Try not to run into her again.â
âIâll try not to.â Abhay chuckled, flustering Piya even more with its sound, and watched her rush by until she disappeared from view.
âââââââââââââââââââââââ
Kabir busied himself to penning a very important letter, away from Piyaâs eyes. She left the building momentarily, giving him the perfect opportunity to finish it. A small confession letter. He was too shy to confess up front, and Piya was so busy these days that he couldnât talk to her about personal matters. He wanted everything about this confession to be subtle. He wasnât the type to confess his feelings out in the open, and he felt like Piya wasnât like that either.
Piya, I know we havenât known each other for long, but in this short span of time, in the moments Iâve spent with you, Iâve grown to like you more than just a friend.
I know this may be sudden, but I want to know if you feel the same way. If not, thatâs okay too. I donât want to lose our friendship over this.
If you accept, wear something yellow the day after the fair. I think it suits you.
- Kabir
He pressed the pen down after signing his name, rereading it over and over again until the awkwardness had settled.
âBoo.â
He jumped and dropped both his pen and the book he was using to write the letter on. Misha burst into laughter, gripping her best friendâs shoulders from laughing too hard.
âWhat the hell, Mish-â
âOh come on, Kabir. Youâre no fun.â Kabir shook his head and picked up the scattered items. Misha caught a glimpse of the letter, winking noticeably at Kabir. She pried the letter from his fingers and read it to herself.
âAlready writing love letters, huh?â She elbowed him in the arm. Kabir blushed and scratched his head. âThis letter is so sugary that it could give me diabetes.â
âMisha, please.....â
âOkay fine. But I will say, you and Piya would look nice as a couple. Two lovey dovey musicians.â
âReally?â He laughed. âI hope youâre right.â
âHope? I am right. Misha Dobriyal is always right. Youâll see, Iâm sure sheâll accept.â
Kabir wanted to have the same confidence as Misha, but he had his doubts. Abhay was becoming his latent competition. He noticed she was growing friendlier towards him, something not that many folks at this university did. Were they friends now? At this point, probably.
I thought she disliked him, he thought. What happened in the past few weeks?
He cleared his mind and carefully folded up the letter, eying Piyaâs bag. She left it on one of the seats in the front row.
âWhat are you waiting for? Go put it in before she comes back.â Misha nudged him forward.
âIâm going, Iâm going....â He carefully snuck past some of their classmates and slid the note into one of her folders. No one saw a thing. He walked back to Misha, who sat back waiting to high five him.
âââââââââââââââââââââââ
âDoon University Annual Charity Fair. Open to all patrons.â
Jeh stood near the gates of the university, his head tilted to the side, forming a deplorable smirk with his lips. âYouâll be here, wonât you Piya...?â Her name rolled off his tongue like butter. âI know you will....â
He pulled a photo out of his back pocket and caressed his with his fingers.
Once I find you, Iâll take you away from all this. Then youâll be mine. Forever and ever.
âââââââââââââââââââââââ
Abhay took up the task of taking Piya home, much to Kabirâs dismay. Piya could see see the disappointment on his face, but it only elicited her confusion. Abhay was her neighbor. It would make sense to go with him if he was with her already.
âIâll see you tomorrow.â She smiled and walked off, Abhay watching the two from afar. He didnât look too happy either. The two locked eyes in an attempt to burn the
other to ashes with the fire of jealousy. Piya rolled her eyes.
Men are so confusing.
Abhay let himself slip. A familiar migraine attacked Kabir with a vengeance, forcing him to take a seat in his car and rest his head on the steering wheel. He felt like his head was going to explode. It didnât dissipate until Piya changed Abhayâs focus back to her.
Kabir strongly opposed the idea of Abhay being with her this much. His attitude and isolative nature only seemed to incite trouble. He stared at Abhayâs car, hoping Piya would read his letter to her soon. At least his head stopped hurting.
Do I need a doctor? Whatâs with these random headaches?
Piya couldnât sit still for a variety of reasons and turned to Abhay as soon as the car started moving. âAre you doing anything special tonight?â
Abhay glanced at her and shook his head. Piya grinned ear to ear. âGreat. I need you for something.â
She ran inside as soon after he parked next to the villa, coming out with her violin. He thought she was going to invite him inside, but she turned him around and dragged him into the forest with her.
âWhere are we going?â
âI didnât have anything in terms of gardening supplies, so I planted some Edelweiss flowers on the large hill in between our houses. Let me show you.â
He already knew where it was, but still agreed to go with her regardless. Some things were just becoming harder to deny. Like how her company made his day just a bit better. But he was still confused as to how he was needed.
The forest welcomed them with a comforting silence. A colorful sunset draped over the horizon, painting the sky with blends of pinks and oranges.
âYou seem awfully excited about these flowers.â He remarked, with disinterest. Piya frowned, stopping in a small pile of leaves. They lightly crunched under her feet.
You really know how to kill enthusiasm.
âWhat happened?â
âNothing.â She continued onward, leading him to the hillside. âUp there.â She pointed up and took firm steps up the slope. Abhay was close behind, making sure she didnât fall. âRight here.â
She gestured towards the marker she left behind the night before, the lone stick standing upright in the soil.
âMandu has extra gardening supplies if you need them. Why not plant them at your home?â
âI know she does. But moving potted plants between houses gets messy real fast. Iâm not going to stay there forever, you know?â
He forgot the villa wasnât actually her home. Eventually she would leave. She was only here for her studies. It was a realization he couldâve gone without.
âThatâs why I planted them here.â
She leaned her back against a tree, examining his expression. If he expressed any emotion at all, most of it could be seen in his eyes. Those eyes looked upset.
âWhat do you need me for?â
âI need you to be my audience. I always get nervous the day before my performances, but if I play for someone outside of rehearsing, it calms me down.â
No wonder she was fidgeting so much. She looked down at the soil. âI also heard playing music for plants helps them grow stronger. So I plan to play here sometimes, and youâre always welcome to listen.â
Abhay read the hope in her expression. If this made her happy, surely it wouldnât hurt to stay. His heart was begging him to. But his mind was still hesitant. Is this what nature actually wanted?
âWill you listen? For my sake?â
He nodded anyways, bringing Piyaâs smile back to her lips.
She sat down a little distance away from the planted area and gestured Abhay to sit down next to her. He chose a place a little farther off, leaning against a tree.
From the three pieces, she played Loveâs Sorrow, knowing that if there was any piece that would make her nervous on stage, it was this one. It held memories of her mother, after all. And they werenât happy ones.
She turned to Abhay after stopping, seeing his eyes closed and the faintest smile on his lips. It was a subtle expression of approval.
âThanks, Abhay.â She whispered.
âNo need to thank me. Your talent speaks for itself.â
He took her hand, helping her down to flatter ground. The glow of their souls resurfaced between them, only visible to Abhay. Startled by the spark that her touch created, he abruptly let go.
Piya recognized the spark too, taking his hand to feel it again. She clasped his hand between hers, feeling warmth from them for the first time. It was the same warmth she felt the night prior.
Iâll make sure I find out the connection between you two.
âI have one more thing I want to ask of you.â
âWhat is it?â
It was something she had been meaning to ask for a while now. She wanted to give this relationship a name.
âYour friendship.â
Friend. A title he gave to very few, and never to a human. Today, a human was asking a vampire to be her friend. A human who he began to hold dear. He felt ready to open up just a little. For her sake.
âIâm not too great at this whole friendship thing. You might regret asking.â
âIâm confident I wonât.â She giggled, knowing it was probably new to him. She led the way back to the villa, her new friend following just behind.
