You should read the Kite Runner! It's not too long and a pretty good books. It's a story about the friendship between two little boys who live in Afghanistan and come from different social backgrounds.

Yeah there is tragedy...it discusses something very sensitive and then also there is some historical events tied into the story that leads to more tragedies...it sounds depressing...because it is but it's still one of my favorite books
