Part 29

Neil was in his room. Doctor was checking him. Mini was pacing her and there waiting for doctor to come out. She was afraid whether Neil’s mom and Naeem bi was right all along and her decision of telling the truth to Neil was wrong. Everything was going fine and Neil was also listening to it patiently but then what happened to him suddenly. Doctor was there for more than half an hour now. Naeem bi looked at Mini, “Don’t worry, everything will be alright.” She assured Mini. “If anything happened to him I wont be able to forgive myself ever.” Replied Mini.

Doctor came out of the room. Mini rushed towards him, “How is he? Is he conscious now?” asked Mini impatiently. “Mrs. Oberoi, he is ok now. He has gained consciousness. I checked him. He is fine. No memory loss, no other implications of any kind.” Replied doctor. “But doctor then why he fainted suddenly?” asked Neil’s mom. “What you told me about his case history and what I could gathered by taking to him I think he regained some of his lost memory while talking to you it must be shock to his system to going through again from the emotional trauma that’s why he fainted. No need to worry about anything he is fine though still in a state of shock.” Explained doctor. “Can I meet him?” asked Neil’s mom. “I advised you to not go in front of him for sometime as the incident which shook him to the core was related to you. He is fine but still fragile on the emotional front. So its better to avoid any kind of mental pressure.” Doctor advised. Naeem bi escorted doctor to the door and took all the notes of medicines he had prescribed. Mrs.Shah decided to follow doctor’s advise and took Mini’s leave. Mini went inside the room to see Neil.

Neil was sitting on the bed. He looked all lost. Mini could understand his situation. The truth he believed all his life turned out to be the biggest lie of his life. Mini came and sit on the bed near him. “Neil, I am sorry you had to go through the hell while remembering that incident but there was no other way….” Mini tried to explain but Neil didn’t let her complete. “I don’t want to hear anything.” Neil said nonchalantly. Mini looked at him listening to his robotic kind of emotionless voice. She felt that he is not showing it but all this has affected him very much. “Neil, talk to me. I know you have many things to say. Don’t hold it.” Mini tried to persuade him to react. “I don’t have anything to say. You and mom told me the truth and I heard it. That’s it. Its over now. I don’t want to discuss it ever.” Neil replied in same disinterested voice. Mini was shocked what happened to Neil. After listening to her mom’s story he is not even showing any emotion. No anger, no remorse, no sadness nothing. He didn’t even ask about his mom. Mini had thought that he would come out of his shell after knowing the truth but seems like he shut down himself more. “He will go mad this way.” Thought Mini.

She moved closer to him and hugged him. “Everything will be fine Neil. I am with you.” Mini said as she rubbed his back consoling him. But she didn’t get any response and he didn’t even hug her back. Mini pulled herself and cupped his face, “Don’t think too much Neil. Give me all your worries.” Mini said and kissed his forehead and eyes and then placed a chaste kiss on his lips. She panicked when again she didn’t get any response. Neil didn’t reciprocate physical gesture from her, it has happened for the first time. “What has happened to you? Talk to me please.” Mini pleaded. “Your parents have asked you to go with them for few days. I think you should fulfill their wish.” Neil indirectly asked Mini to go away from here. Mini gasped and stood up in shock. “I thought what I am doing is for your betterment. You will come out of your past after knowing the truth. I didn’t know it will affect you in this way. I am sorry…because of me you are in pain…I am really sorry but don’t ask me to leave you.” Mini cried. “I understand its not your fault. But I want to be alone for sometime.” Neil said again without even looking at her. “Whatever it is you can share it with me….you promised me you will never push me away from you…then why are you doing this?” Mini implored. “Because I am not me anymore….I need time and space to figure out what all happened. Please leave me alone.” Neil said stressing the last line. Mini couldn’t take it anymore and she went out of the room crying. She decided if he wanted to be alone right now if this will help him then she will leave him alone. She packed her bags and told everything to Naeem bi. “Take care of him.” Mini asked Naeem bi and left for Saroj mami’s house.

Mini left for Patiala with her parents. Her parents asked her about the sudden change of decision she didn’t tell anything in Saroj mami’s house but on their way to Patiala she told everything to her parents. They were also shocked to listen to the whole incident. “Mini, what have you done? Neil ko uski maa se milane ke chakkar mein tune apni aur Neil ki married life daav par laga di.” Babita scolded her. “What are you saying? Our daughter did everything with good intentions she didn’t know that all this will affect Neil in this way. But I am sure everything will be fine soon.” Hanuman Singh assured Mini and wiped her tears. “Don’t know dad when he will call me back or he will even want to live with me again….I messed up everything. His mom and Naeem bi were right. Somethings are better left undiscovered…I should not have tried to uncover the truth…It has hurt him so bad that he don’t want to talk to anyone…even me…He himself asked me to go away…it had never happened previously….I think he hates me now…dad…I cant live without him…I want him back.” Mini wailed leaving the pretense of strong woman. “Have some patience my child. Give him some time to recover. Have faith in your marriage. I am sure everything will be fine soon.”Hanuman Singh hugged Mini and consoled her.

Neil on the other hand spent all his time either in bar or locked in his room. He was drunk when he was going back to his room. He saw that corner where all his awards were kept along with the photographs. He went near it and saw his dad and mom smiling at him. He felt anger rising inside him looking at their faces. He first threw away his whiskey glass and then one by one broke all the photo frames. Naeem bi came running hearing the sound, “What are you doing Neil? Stop it.” said Naeem bi as she tried to stop him. “All lies….I have been surrounded with lies all my life…mom dad…look at them how happy they seem together….only if I knew the truth….they kept me in dark always….they are liars.” Neil vent out his frustration. “They did it for you my child. For your happiness.” Naeem bi tried to explain. “NO, they did it to maintain their image in society…to create a myth of happy family when they hated each and every second with each other.” Neil shouted. “No Neil its not true…I agree that they were not best husband and wife but both of them loved you so much that they were ready to bear each other’s hatred for your sake.” Naeem bi tried her best to make him understand.

Neil looked at the decorative mirror piece on the wall and saw his reflection then he saw his dad’s photo. He felt disgusted with him, “Look, Naeem bi….I look like dad a lot….I look like that abusive, debaucher man…his blood run in my veins….I have temper issues….I am dominant and intimidating….I have ego….all qualities like him….one day I know I will turn out to be like him…its good…its good that I sent Mini away from me.” Neil repeated hysterically and threw another photo frame to break the mirror. “Neil, please don’t compare yourself with him. You love Mini…I know…you wont ever hurt her.” Naeem bi consoled him. Neil broke down crying. He sat on the floor and wailed, “I worshiped that man all my life. He was my hero…how could he do this to mom. He made her life hell and also made me hate her…..she endured his torture and then she endure my apathy…all because of this man…I hate him…I will destroy everything related to him.” Neil said and stood up with determination. He went outside the house into the parking. He uncovered his dad’s old car and went into the garage and brought some oil. He splashed the oil on it and light up the lighter and threw it on the car. Naeem looked at it horrified as Neil burned down the car. He kept standing there looking at the burning car with tear filled eyes and finally collapsed on the floor. Naeem bi asked the servants to extinguish the fire and took Neil back to his room with their help.

Two days passed but Neil didn’t come out of his room. He was not agitated anymore after he burned the car. His emotional outburst kind of helped him in venting out his bottled up emotions but he was still sad. Naeem bi brought his food in his room. “I am thinking I should go and meet mom.” Said Neil. “Its good decision. You should go to her. She has not seen you from that day. She calls me everyday to ask about you.” Informed Naeem bi. “I don’t have courage…kadam uthte hain phir ruk jate hain….kaise face karu unhe…kya muh leke jaun….itne saal unse bina matlab nafrat karte aaya hoon ab himmat nahi hoti unke paas jane ki.” Neil expressed his feelings. “She is your mother. Maa ka dil bahut bada hota hai…tu bas chala ja unke paas…dekhna wo khud hi tujhe apne gale laga lengi tujhe kuch nahi karna padega.” Naeem bi encouraged him.

Neil entered Mrs. Shah’s house. Servant asked him to wait in the living hall. He sat down on the sofa. He looked at the picture of his mom with her second husband Subodh Shah which was placed on the table. He noticed his mom looked happy. Her smile was reaching her eyes unlike her photos with his dad in which she used to wear fake smile for his sake. He was engrossed in his thoughts when Mrs. Shah came there. He looked at her and just like Naeem bi said he didn’t have to do anything she came running to him and embraced him in her arms. She started crying and Neil also couldn’t stop his tears. Both mother and soon stood their hugging each other crying together.

On the other hand Naeem bi called Mini and told her everything what Neil did in these few days. Mini was worried after listening that he burned the car and broke the photo frames but when Naeem bi told her that his emotional outburst helped him in a way and he started opening up and even wanted to communicate with his mother Mini sighed in relief. She wanted to come running back to him but then she decided that when everything is becoming normal again then she should not hurry for anything and give him some more time. Let him spend sometime with his mom alone. When he feels ok he will call her on his own.

Few more days passed. Neil was now regularly visiting his mom and spent his most of the time with her. He was lying on sofa and his head was on her lap. “Mom, how could you believe in love after what happened in your life? I mean first your family forced you to get married then dada dadi hide truth about dad’s nature from you then dad treated you so badly….all of them lied to you, betrayed you…how could you keep your faith in love alive?” asked Neil as this question was bugging him now since few days. “What all happened with me was my fate. Love was not responsible for it. Love was always there in my life in the form of Subodh. First I didn’t have the courage to follow it and then I tried to search love in wrong people. But then it came back in my life. I consider myself as lucky in this matter. Logo ki life nikal jati hai sachhe pyar ki talash mein lekin unhe nahi milta aur meri life mein pyar bar bar aaya….main hi thukrati rahi use but wo phir laut kar aata raha….aur aakhir maine use apna hi liya…bahut badi keemat chukani padi lekin…main kaise khud ko us se durr rakh sakti thi...wo bhi aise insaan se jisne puri zindagi mera intezaar kiya…use koi fark nahi pada ki meri shadi ho gayi hai mera ek bachha hai…usne bas dekha ki main dukhi hoon aur aaj bhi use chahti hoon…sachha pyar aisa hi hota hai…agar aisa koi life mein mile toh use khud se durr nahi jane dena chahiye.” Mrs. Shah explained stressing the last part.

“I know Neil, you love Mini…bas confess nahi kar pa rahe the…you were afraid of your own feelings…afraid that she would hurt you like your mom, right? But you are now free from whatever fears you had related to your past. Now don’t wait anymore. That girl Mini, she loves you with all her heart. I could see it in her eyes when we used to meet. Inspite of all your flaws and baggage she has accepted you whole heartedly. Don’t test her too much. She is waiting for you. Love is waiting for you. Stop running now. Embrace the love.” Mrs. Shah put her hand lovingly on Neil’s head as she gave him the wise advice. “I will mom…I will…I have hurt her a lot….Now I will make everything right. Tomorrow first thing in the morning I am going to get her back.” Said Neil. “Why wait till tomorrow? Why not now?” asked Mrs. Shah. “Because I have to select a gift for her. I will make the moment memorable for her…all hearts and flowers….just the way she likes it and it will take time so tomorrow.” Replied Neil as he smiled for the first time in all these days. Mrs. Shah wished him all the best and he took her leave to make arrangements for tomorrow.

Mini was sitting with her mom and Preet in Patiala. She was helping her mom in household chores. Babita was doing preparations for making mango pickle. “So how is Neil now?” asked Preet. “I talked to Naeem bi yesterday. She said he is fine now. He even met his mom and everything is fine between them.” Replied Mini as she inhaled the sour aroma of raw mango. It felt soothing to her nerves. She couldn’t stop herself and picked up two three pieces to eat. “When everything is fine now then you should go back to Delhi.” Preet advised. “I don’t know Preet, he is ok but Naeem bi said that she could still see that sadness in his eyes and besides he didn’t call me or even messaged me once means he still don’t want to talk to me.” Replied Mini as she again grabbed two slices of raw mango. “But till when you will wait for his call?” asked Preet. Mini just shrugged in reply and again her hand went towards the plate but this time Babita hit her hand, “Minni ki bachhi…abhi sab kha jayegi toh achaar ke liye kya bachega?” Babita chided her. “What? Now I cant even have few slices? It feels so…so satisfying” said Mini innocently. “You never liked raw mangoes why are you suddenly eating lots of it? If I didn’t know you better I would have thought that you are going to give us good news.” Said Babita and became busy in her work. But Mini was silent for sometime as she remembered her visit to gynaec. She had told her to come back for pregnancy test next week but Mini had forgotten it because of all the mess after the party.

“You could be right this time.” replied Mini as she looked at Babita. “Really?” Babita asked getting excited. “Not confirmed, still has to check it with doctor.” Said Mini. “Then what are we waiting for lets go.” Replied Babita and she took Mini with her to get her checked. Doctor tested her and asked them to collect the test reports after few hours. Mini along with Babita and Preet went to collect the reports. Babita’s happiness knew no bounds when the report turned out to be positive. She hugged Mini in excitement. They came back home and Babita got busy in making something sweet to celebrate. Mini was silent all this while. Preet understood her dilemma. She shook her and asked her, “You have to decide Mini. Do you want this child?” asked Preet as she knew her friend was confused about it.

Mini closed her eyes trying to find out what her heart wants and all she could remember was her conversation with Neil. “What would you have felt if I have got pregnant?” she had asked “Then I would have been the happiest man on earth.” Neil had replied.” Mini remembered Neil’s state when she left Delhi. She remembered Naeem bi telling her that he is still sad. She opened her eyes as she got her answer. “I want this baby. I want this baby for Neil. He will be very happy. This baby will bring him out of his sadness.” Replied Mini as she smiled amidst her tears. “But Mini what about your career?” asked Preet as she knew about Mini’s dream. “It can wait. Nothing is as important as Neil to me. Everything else can wait. But I want Neil’s happiness. I love him and I am willing to sacrifice everything for him. I just want to see him smiling….I miss him terribly. I want to go back to him. Don’t know when he will call me back to Delhi on his own but when he will come to know about this baby he will definitely wont let me go away from him again.” Replied Mini as she finally let her guard down and showed her vulnerability in front of Preet.

Mini tried to convince Babita and Hanuman to let her go back to Delhi today itself.They were not agreeing for it as it was evening already and she will reach Delhi only at night but Mini was adamant for it but then somehow they managed to persuade her saying that she can go early morning. Mini couldn’t sleep at night and got ready quickly in the morning. She called for a cab and took her parents leave. Around afternoon Babita was surprised to see Neil in haveli. “Neil, what are you doing here?” asked Babita. “I am here to take back Mini. Where is she? I thought of giving a surprise to her that’s why didn’t inform her.” said Neil as he kept looking here and there to find her. “Neil, she left early morning for Delhi” Babita informed her. “What?” Neil asked shocked. He called Naeem bi to find out if Mini reached there but Naeem bi said no. They thought to wait for some more time. Mini’s phone was also switched off. Around evening also when Mini didn’t reach Delhi Neil started to panic.

“Where is she? Why she didn’t reach till now?” he asked. Just then he got a call from an unknown number. He took it immediately thinking Mini must be calling him from some other phone, “Hello, Mini is that you? where are you?” he asked on phone. “Your wife Mini is kidnapped. She is with us. If you want see her alive then keep 50 crores ready. We will call again.” The call was cut before Neil could ask anything and then he received a video message immediately he opened it and saw Mini was tied on a chair and her mouth was also tied with a cloth. Some man who’s hand was only visible, opened her mouth and asked her to call her husband for help. Mini looked angrily at him and shook her head vigorously in no. That man slapped her and blood started oozing out from the corner of her lips. Neil’s blood boiled looking that scene. But his heart broke when the very next second Mini cried for help, “Neil, take me away from here. I want to come home. Help me.” Neil sat down in shock as the video ended.
