Chapter 16
"What did you mean?"
Geet looked at Maan, he'd returned and sat on the edge of the bed cradling his head lost in deep thoughts. She wiped her face on the towel tossing it on the sofa and walked past him trying to ignore him.
"What do you mean, Geet?" he stood straight and backed her towards the wall caging her in between his arms.
"What do you think I meant?" she retorted narrowing her eyes.
"Do you really want a divorce?" he asked her directly.
"I don’t WANT it, I need it for the sake of my sanity in living with you" she yelled. "All any girl ever wants when she gets married is to be loved, I thought we were getting somewhere… you gave me hope then snatched it away" she continued screaming.
Maan looked hurt, but he quickly masked his expression and stepped back. He wanted to say something, but it was as if something had stopped him.
"Okay, if that’s what you want" he swallowed the lump that formed in his throat.
A flash of pain crossed her face, but she quickly hid her emotions, she wasn’t going to give him the benefit of seeing her hurting like this.
"If you want a divorce, then that’s what I'll give you" he stated.
"Maan" a gasp escaped, the echo bouncing around the wall.
Both turned their heads to see dadima stood near the open door.
"Dadima" he bellowed hurrying to her side seeing her knees buckle and almost collapse, he grabbed her around the waist and scooped her into his arms. "Dadima… dadima" he called seeing her faint.
Geet rushed over overcoming her initial shock and patted her cheeks, "dadima…"
"Geet, move" Maan panicked and rushed out of the room, Geet followed behind. Dev and Naintara hurried over seeing Maan cradling dadima in his arms.
"Dev, get the car out!" he called out and both brothers hurried with their wives following behind them.
Maan paced the hallway in tension, Geet and Naintara sat on the chairs in the waiting room whilst Dev leaned against the wall waiting for some news.
"How did she suddenly just collapse?" Dev inquired biting his lip worryingly.
Maan stopped, he glanced over at Geet as she did the same as well. They both looked away feeling the guilt clawing at their insides as they were the reason for her condition.
Before Dev could repeat his question, the doctor walked out to speak to them.
"How is she?" Maan approached him eagerly. He needed her to be okay. She had to be.
"Ms Devi is stable now, hypotension caused her to feel dizzy and lose consciousness. You need to make sure she isn't stressing, she needs to exercise regularly, have lots of water. I'm also going to prescribe fludrocortisone, so please make sure she's taking this" he handed them a printed prescription. "You can collect this at the pharmacy downstairs" he added.
"Can we see her?" Maan inquired.
"Of course, we're going to discharge her. Please complete the paperwork".
"Bro, you see to dadima. I'll get the paperwork sorted" Dev told him and looked at Naintara who'd joined his side and they followed the doctor towards his office.
Maan glanced over his shoulder at Geet, she looked in just as much pain as he. "Come, Geet" he told her and together they walked towards the room where dadima was.
Maan winced seeing the electrodes attached to her chest and arms monitoring her.
Dadima's eyes fluttered open slowly as if sensing someone was present in the room, she felt her heart ache seeing Maan and Geet near the edge of her bed.
"Dadima" he took her hand into his squeezing gently, he bowed his head feeling ashamed and pressed a kiss to her wrinkled hands. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry".
"Maan…" she whispered hoarsely and brought her other hand cupping his cheek and making her look at him. She shook her head and looked over at Geet then stretched out her hand for her. Geet walked forward however with a heavy heart, she was still feeling guilt eating away at her insides.
She was the cause of this.
"I'm sorry, Geet" dadima apologised. "I… I ruined your life" she whispered.
"Nahi, dadima" Geet shook her head, a tear rolled down her cheek.
Dadima looked between them, "I ruined both of your lives" she sighed sadly. "I was selfish and didn’t realise that you weren't even compatible with each other".
"Dadima, please stop…." Maan shook his head squeezing her hand again. "You didn’t do anything, Geet and I have talked. We're going to work on our marriage" he stated.
Geet nodded though she knew he was lying but lying right now was better for dadima's safety. They didn’t want her to be stressed and falling even more ill.
"I… I don’t want you to compromise for me, I just… I thought you'd be happy and…" she choked on a small sob. "I'm sorry…" she apologised again.
"Please, dadima" Maan pleaded. "Don’t. We're not compromising, we're going to work on this, I promise" he promised.
Geet ignored the feeling of her stomach sinking with his false promises, she blinked and leaned forward pressing a kiss to dadima's cheek. "He's right" she whispered, another tear rolling down her cheek, this time not for dadima but for the fact that she was trapped. With him. In this marriage.
Dadima slowly nodded smiling in some time, that relieved Maan. He bowed his head pressing his forehead to her hands and squeezing her hand once again gently.
After dadima was discharged, they'd left and returned to the Khurana mansion. Maan scooped dadima in his arms once again carrying her to the bedroom.
The others dispersed bidding goodnight to her, Maan stayed a while besides her watching over. Once satisfied she was sleeping peacefully did he stand and head towards his room.
He entered and found Geet curled on their bed, in the middle the line of cushions returned as well.
He sighed heavily, he quickly changed in the washroom and joined her on his side leaving the cushions between them.
Tomorrow he thought as he drifted off to sleep.
