If you have been watching the daily Health Ministry briefings on the Covid19 , this guy Lav Agarwal stands out with his calm and balanced handling of the briefings and the subsequent question-answer session.

Interesting facts about this bureaucrat who are among the new breed of progressive bureaucrats :

MX player has come with a new web series..Ek Thi Beghum. Starring Anuja Sathe, Chinmay Mandlekar, Abhijeet chavan, Santosh Juvekar and others.

Here is the plot:

It may be too early to say but IMHO India has handled the situation much better than many other countries in spite of it's poor health infrastructure. If you track the number of cases and the deaths, it has not exploded as in the west (even as testing has been quickly ramped up). Barring a few statements trying to score political points, the states and centre have coordinated well so far. Keeping fingers crossed that the containment procedure being adopted in hot pockets will yield results and stop the spreading of cases like wildfire.

no of cases has no meaning because there is not much of mass level testing here. According to the medical experts in India and developed countries.

If there were a large number of cases which have not been reported due to low level of testing, then there would have been a much larger number of deaths due to covid19. Deaths due to Covid19 cannot be hidden as these days most deaths which have respiratory background are analysed for covid19. If you look logically, the % mortality rate is more or less similar to many other countries.

We have reported around 6000 cases and mortality is around 180 which works out to 3% which is observed at most places (though overall average in some countries has been even 6%) . If our actual cases were 50000 (ten times more) then our deaths would have been close to 1500 (close to 3000 if we were to consider 6% mortality rate) which is not the case as yet.

This is my view (though I am not a health expert).

My personal view on insufficient covid19 tests being conducted in India:

Many experts and WHO keep talking about Test, Test Test. Whereas ICMR keeps telling Isolate, Isolate, Isolate for the Indian situation. I believe in the ICMR logic.

The ICMR logic is simple... if someone gets infected, then his viral load may be insufficient to give a positive test result sometimes as much as 5 -6 days after infection. During mass random testing if that person gets tested on say day 3 and the result is negative he will have a false sense of security that he is disease free and may merrily go around infecting his family and close contacts till he starts feeling sick (or if he is asymptomatic, he will never know how many more he will infect). Not only that, the test conducted on him will be wasted and RT-PCR test kits are a scarce resource.

Some are hoping this Rapid Testing will do the trick. but experts have warned that rapid tests can give false negatives so they will continue to be quarantined and even a positive in rapid test has to be confirmed by the standard lengthy RT-PCR test. So in effect, Rapid Tests will be only a screening test and the RT-PCR test will continue to be the confirming test.

The safest and best way for Indians is to isolate.

everyone is not severely infected. Some patients get cured in 4-5 days but they can pass on the infection to others. Such cases may not be even reported.
