The basic theme itself is about showing an ideal man and how he lived his life but I don't agree that there is no grey. Literally every character has made some choice that can be questioned. Ram agreeing to Sitajis agni pariksha on two occasion. Sending her to exile while she is pregnant on mere doubt casted by citizens put questions on his character. Similarly Kumbhakarna. Kaikei isn't evil, she was grey. Manthara was real evil.

Shri Ram was an ideal man only.So he chose his responsiblity as a king over his responsibility of a husband.In those times a kshatriya was supposed to fulfill his duities towards the throne and the kingdom primarily.

I think it was to show that an ideal man can end up taking a wrong decission while following his ideals and fulfilling his duties
