Sex without consent is rape: 'Marzi' actor Rajeev Khandelwal

At the moment, Bollywood actor Rajeev Khandelwal is seen in drama thriller web series 'Marzi'.

MUMBAI: Actor Rajeev Khandelwal feels its important to understand the value of consent in a relationship, saying one "cant have sex with somebody without that persons consent, it is as good as rape".

"Consent very simply means that you have the permission of the other person to go ahead. Most of the time, we are confused between having a right over somebody just because somebody else suggests that you hold a certain position and we take it as a right over the other person and confuse that with consent," Rajeev said while explaining what consent means to him.

"Understand, that even in the most important cases, we have to sign consent forms, be it at the hospital. Be it other places where it is very critical, where the issue is very critical, we have to sign consent forms. They can't take us for granted," he added.

According to the actor, the same applies to any relationship.

He said: "Similarly, in a relationship between a man and a woman, it is a question of somebody's life, you can't have sex with somebody without that person's consent, it is as good as rape. Especially in a relationship between a man and a woman when they are dating, when they are seeing each other, a lot of times the person or their partner take it for granted that since we are seeing each other I have the right over each other which I guess is wrong."

"Till a certain point where it doesn't harm the other one, harm the sensibility of the other person, it's fine. But the moment you cross the line which can affect somebody's life, you have to have the consent before you take that step," Rajeev added.

At the moment, Rajeev is seen in drama thriller web series "Marzi". It is about a series of casual activities between the two protagonists of the show, who subsequently falls into a major mishap, exposing the fading line between power, deception, and trust.

Set in Shimla, the show, which streams on Voot Select, questions the loyalty of a situation while constantly asking the question - 'who's side are you on?'. It also stars Aahana Kumra.

Talking about being part of "Marzi", Rajeev said: "As far as working for Voot Select is concerned, I think we all have really enjoyed and what I am enjoying more is the type of content that the platform is showcasing. It's so refreshing and different from a lot of other Indian platforms. I am very proud of 'Marzi' and wait for Season 2. That's all I can say."

Smooth Operator who cleverly adheres to the eleventh commandment - thou shalt not get caughtEmoji

He is goodlooking, has a way with words and women fall for his charm. Sweet talker.

Haughty and arrogant doctor as well and could have easily carried on forcing himself on women but for his fetish to hold onto the spoils of his conquests. His trophies, his downfall.

He always wears a mask. How difficult it must be. How much effort. Real criminal mind.

As the manipulative cool customer he is at his evil best. Liked the way he did the scene with Nitin, the one where he tells him of his secret meetings, eevviilll and in ever other scene.

The way he manipulates his son, more evil.

Marzi did not sustain the suspense about the liar and that was disappointing. Knew for sure he was the liar when he asks the lady police officer if she was married at the end of the third episode.

Till then wanted/hoped it was Sameera's fault or both of theirs.

Wanted to believe him. Wanted it to be partially her fault. Sending wrong signals to a man. Going out for dinner and then inviting him home for drinks.

Actually doubted him too when he turns on his charm (very easily) and gets her to accept his invitation and says 'only dinner'.

A psychiatrist can analyse and attribute reasons for his perversion.

Maybe he has performance anxieties and he spills before he enters or as soon as he enters and maybe someone had laughed and teased him about his quickies.

There is season 2 and it must be out in the English original.

But speculating even it is way off mark is always niceEmoji.

After the third episode or so, there was more of Sameera and other characters. Once again almost lost in a crowd of women.

He spoiled us with Aamir, since then expect him to be if not in all but in almost all the scenes. This is satisfying though. Very greedy Emoji

Happy he is not doing Haqse season 2.

- His marzi, he gets what he wants.

- selfish sameera's marzi, gives a damn about others feelings, about anurag's son or the doctors reputation when she writes about him,

- the son's marzi, has sex with a minor, my feelings, i want sex, not worried about the consequences.

- his girl friend's marzi, doesnt care about her parents or anything else,

- sameera's sister's marzi, doesn't care about her husband, child and sister

- nitin's marzi, cheater.

Selfish people who cheat and get cheated.

His got his way 17 times. An intelligent focused disciplined 😃maniac.

All the cheats, betrayers, psychos come together. Unfortunate.... the way her sister's story ended. Its the kids who suffer and the kid might grow upto be a mentally affected person, like anurag's son. All carrying baggage from childhood. Loss of innocence.

Marzi first impression: An engaging thriller owned by Rajeev ...

Anurag needed a psychiatric patient, a woman getting out of depression to go after him. Pursue him and nail him. Very persistent.

A good battle/duel of wits.

Telling her where he keeps the key, and not adding the party drug in the last woman's drink.

Anurag Saraswat is conniving, scheming, pure black.

And an open mouthed passionate and erotic kiss with some tongue dueling probably. (wonder how the post corona world will be, maybe at least for a few weeks/months there might be no kissing, hehehe and pigs will fly😃)

Looked good with the towel wrapped around his waist. And with the turtle neck sweaters. And in all other scenes as well.

Subodh sir and Rashmi ji were good. A good bondEmoji. All acted well.

Well made Season 1. It was more about she convincing her folks/police, finding leads and confronting and finishing him off.

Soo...how many mins of him in season 2...

Marzi Review: This is an engaging series with great performance by ...

His walk with his bag in the hospital the day after sameera had made her Fb post brought to mind the aamir scene when he walks with the red suitcase through those mutton stalls. All eyes on him.

When i became his fan it was about his movies, its release dates, and then checking the newspaper and online sites to see in which theater it would release, the timings, etc. Now though it is all about downloading apps and subscribing for it. Life throws surprises. This is surely one.

Marzi actor Rajeev Khandelwal: Have never been captive to an image

Rajeev Khandelwal and Aahana Kumra starrer Marzi released a few weeks ago on Voot Select. The series kicks off with a dinner date between a surgeon (Khandelwal), and a school teacher (Kumra) which turns ugly when the former is accused of rape the next morning. Marzi has been receiving appreciation for its sensitivity in handling the subject and performance by the lead actors.

Rajeev Khandelwal, who is presently in his Goa home, exclusively spoke to indianexpress.com about his latest project, challenges of essaying a rape-accused man, and how he chooses his projects.

Sharing what made him pick Marzi, the actor said, “It was very different, nicely written and handled. The subject was also very exciting. It’s topical and very relatable. When I heard the script, I really wanted to do it. Also, every character is well written and is somewhere interconnected. Marzi is not a routine show with a hero and heroine, and you would have to watch it to know more. It was quite a challenging character for me, since I haven’t attempted anything like this before. And now that I look back, I am happy that I took the call, and could include the project in my resume.”

Ask him what kind of challenges he faced while playing the role, and pat came the reply, “Trust me, it wasn’t easy. My director really helped me out. I was adamant about how my character would react in certain situations. But Anil (the director) made me understand his perspective. He gave a brilliant suggestion that we should shoot both the perspective – his and mine and finalise things on the edit table. However, before the release, he did tell me that he didn’t retain even one of my ideas (laughs). He really pitched in and helped me separate Rajeev from the character. Even Aahana and the other actors helped me out. So it was kind of a combined effort.”

Khandelwal, who has a huge fan following among women, further shared that he is not scared to pick up negative roles to maintain an image. “As an actor, for me it’s not about left, right or centre. It’s about getting an opportunity to widen my bandwidth as a performer. Honestly, I have never been captive to an image. I understand I have a lover-boy image, and girls like that. I love the adulation but my efforts have never been to cling on to that. For me, once a side is done, I make an effort to do something very different from the last one. And thankfully, this practice has worked, as people love me as a personality, a package, not just for a character.”

Most actors talk about being in a dark space after playing complicated characters. When we quizzed Rajeev Khandelwal whether he too takes his character back home, he said, “May be for a few days, but it doesn’t reflect in my day-to-day attitude. I honestly miss all my characters, and keep wondering what else I could have done. I have always stepped away when my character is on peak. Though I do wish I could have played Rajveer (Left Right Left), Sujal (Kahiin Toh Hoga), Vivaan Agasthi (Table No 21) or Aamir a little more. It’s an interesting space but it’s not like I come back home and scream at my wife. We actors are a little moody and sometimes in our own world, so our fights are based on that, not because of me being in my character’s head.”

On a concluding note, the 44-year-old explained why he takes up so few projects, “I have always said that work is not my life. The other part is also important, and I don’t know how to prove this to anyone. The five-six months of holiday, or my time in my Goa home is very important for me. So whenever I am doing a project, I pre-book my flight tickets as per the schedule. And then, even if a project comes by, I refuse it. This is how I have handled my career and somewhere I realised, it works for me. And after all these years, if people tell me they want to see more of me, it means they are not bored of me. And what I am doing is somehow the right approach.”
