PART 142

8 Days Later

The shores roared as if in a welcoming tune, glistening golden at this time of the year with no turbulences whatsoever . But what glistened brighter than the golden yellow specks of dust off the water were the eyes of the ones seeing their home, their motherland, their life ahead, after what seemed like an eternity.

“Its so sunny today,” Siya said as she came to stand next to Ram on the deck. Land was approximately 2 hours away, and all of them came to stand ahead to catch a glimpse of the shores of Kanyakumari, the same place where Pawan had landed to make his endeavour of saving Lakshman’s life possible. But for the others, the green and golden dunes smelt and felt like home.

“Guess Ill need some getting used to this sunlight..” Siya giggled off but Ram comprehended the deeper meaning of what she had spoken. It would take some time, getting used to being Siya Seerdhwaj and Ram Suryavanshi again. He silently slid his hand next to Siyas free hand, the other one of which sheltered her eyes in an attempt to get a look at the lands clearly.

“Bhaiyya,” Lakshman spoke as he came near him Urmila, his hand entwined with hers.

Ram looked at him as the two brothers shared a silent nod.

They’d made it. Through thick and thin. Through everything. Despite everything that had happened, Ram had kept his promise to his parents. He looked around, noting how everyone stared at the expanse of the land with the same yearning in their minds. Some had left behind parents, children, partners… some had no one left for them but had made lifelong friends. It would be something they’d done not for themselves, but for their whole nation. For the betterment of the whole world.

They’d have to face repercussions, yes, but that meant nothing in front of their joy and pride.

Siya looked down at the radar and smiled.

“Ram,” she called out.

Ram looked at her as she pointed to the yellow dot flickering, counting in reverse as the kilometres lessened.

“One hour, friends!” Ram called out looking at everyone cheering and hastening up.

Urmila placed her hand on her heart and looked at Siya, just like how she would as a child, losing her speech in excitement and only speaking through her eyes.

“We’re here,” Siya mouthed.

Pawan walked slowly upto Ram as both of them turned to look at Pawan.

“Sir, Maam, I had something to say to you and Lakshman Sir and Urmila Maam as well.”

Ram was about to speak, when Siya spoke in,

“Di, Pawan. Maam makes me sound like I am no one special to you. Ive already told you thrice,” she smiled.

Pawan smiled back.

“Sure… I mean it will get some time to be used to but.. I will.. Di.”

“There you go,” she replied.

Rams heart filled with happiness seeing them like this. He could see his family in him, and Pawan was now no less.

“By the way Pawan, you were telling us something?”

“Yes, sir.”

Ram called Lakshman and Urmila as they stood in a circle.

“So… I think Ive said this before too… but the time was such… I think I didn’t say it all.”

“Wh..what do you mean Pawan?” Lakshman asked.

He took a pause as he began.

“Well, I told you that, when Id come here, I met Bharat Sir, right?”

“WHAT?!” Everyone except Ram exclaimed. Siya and Urmila were of course unaware, and Lakshman given the state he was in, must have forgotten. And somehow, they never brought up the topic amongst themselves in these few days. Not that they didnt have greater fearful thoughts to tend to.

“I .. I remember,” Ram said,”And I deliberately didnt tell anyone of you. You might have felt worried.. about what he’d be doing without Maanvi and the others here for a few days but I know him, he must have told them before coming…”

“Actually…” Pawan cut off apologetically. “Here is where.. the problem lies. Theres something, I didnt tell you Sir.”

————————

/FLASHBACK TO THE DAY THE FAMILY ARRIVED AT BHARATS RESIDENCE

“OH MY GOD,” Shatrughan exclaimed as he sat up In his bed in their room, midday, owing to their late travel and arrival.

“What happened?” Shruti asked sitting up slowly.

“Shruti… as far as I remember seeing his room… it’s not a double bed. “

“What do you…. OH!” Shruti shook her head as she understood.

Shatrughan looked at her helplessly.

“I had one job, literally. I was just so tired I didnt even bother to… damn it.”

“And I didnt even check the room properly, “ she sulked. “One of them is either sleeping on the sofa outside or on the floor…. I didnt even check if Bhaiyya had a couch in that room..”

Both of them shot up after a moment and raced to the living room, only to find no one there.

“You wanted something?”

Both of them turned around to be met by Bharat coming out of the kitchen, oil stains on his apron.

“Bhai,” Shatrughan walked up. “You didnt even Bother to tell us didnt you?”

“W..what?” He asked, perfectly understanding what he meant.

Shatrughan kept quiet for a few moments waiting for him to atleast act like he understood, but spoke for himself.

“Please shift to that room. Shruti and I wont have any problem. The two of you need your space.”

Bharat smiled looking away.

“We have our space, lots of it.” The hint of sad sarcastic dejection was evident in him.

“Please Bhaiyya” Shruti spoke. “This is not a time for the two of you to keep moving away from each other. Ive seen it in her eyes, how much she loves you.”

It was just then that all of them turned around to the sound of the door to Bharats room creaking open, Maanvi looking at them with bloodshot eyes.

It was evident neither of them had had any sleep.

“No need Shruti, Im comfortable here.”

“Me too,” Bharat added.

Shatrughan eyed the two of them staring intently at each other. For heavens sake, he thought, they NEEDED to talk. Talk their hearts out.

“No, the two of you will shift to that room. Shruti and I won’t have any problem. We’ve talked over this.”

“Im Okay here,” Maanvi spoke.

“Im okay, too.” Bharat replied without breaking his gaze for a second. Either felt the other was unwilling to close the gap, when truly, the only thing that stood between themselves was, their aching hearts itself.

Shatrughan shook his head pushing back his tears of anger and desperation.

“Whatever you wish.” He said as she stormed back off into his room, Shruti following him dejectedly behind, leaving Maanvi and Bharat standing to themselves.

“You..you didnt sleep?” She asked taking a few steps ahead.

“Did.. you?” Bharat asked coming ahead, a fraction.

“Its too uncomfortable for you like that..” She added.

Another step.

“No, I often sleep there. Im sorry for the dirty room, I know you’re not used to this..”

Another fraction.

“There are a lot of things I wasn’t used to. I am now, I guess.”

“Same here, willingly or unwillingly.” He gulped as he now stood right in front of her, his slow breath fanning her neck as she looked up slowly.

So close, yet so far. Bharat slowly raised his hand to her arms, her eyes darting around his face when..

“BEEEEEPPPP!”

Bharat tore away as she blinked and cleared his throat.

“The smoke alarm… I probably short circuited the induction again… I…”

Maanvi nodded hurriedly catching her breath.

“Ill get it sorted,” he said. “Don’t come in the kitchen.”

“But..”

“No. It’s not safe. Just get me the pliers from the drawer in my room.”

Maanvi moved away back into the room and through her blurry eyes fumbled for the pliers. She took a deep breath as she ran the events over her mind again. She was so close to him yet…

She got him the pliers only to see Bharat having fixed the loose switch himself and checking the metre box.

“Its okay, I already did it.”

“Oh, okay.” She said walking back, As Bharat clenched his other hand in pain From a shock.

“I shouldn’t tell her.. She’d be more troubled,” he whispered, moving around to find an ointment for himself, all as Maanvi watched silently.

/FLASHBACK ENDS

———

AT the Deck

“I..I didn’t tell you all this because it would have only made you distraught. I understood you needed some time to yourselves first and thats why.. Please don’t be angry with me. I didnt mean to hurt you. It was best that I said it now.”

All of them looked at each other, as Lakshman shook his head in anger and cluched the deck railings tightly. His Bharat Bhaiyya, the one who had been the most sensitive, the most kind hearted, how could he desert all of them like that?! And Maanvi.. what would she have felt like?

“I can’t believe, Bharat Bhaiyya.. “

Urmila gulped. She knew how Maanvi was. No, it definitely wasn’t easy for her, or wasn’t going to be either.

“Where is he now?” Ram asked.

“He didnt tell me the exact place, but he said its where your first house was..”

“Our first house is in Ayodhya itself…” Lakshman stopped as he seemed to remember something and looked at Ram who already knew.

He sighed as he held Pawans shoulders.

“Its okay Pawan, Im sure we can make things alright. I know where he is. Once we reach land, we’ll go to him first.”

Please, let us reach faster, Siya prayed.

————————

Shruti helped Bharat clear away the dishes post their minimal lunch as Maanvi put the leftovers into the fridge.

“Two days, can you believe it, 2 more DAYS ONLY!” Shruti chirped lightening everyones mood around, except a solemn Bharat.

“Bhai, “ Shatrughan said to Bharat,” I still think we should be back home before he comes here, if he does know the address somehow.”

Bharat smiled.

“Ive told you Shatrughan, I can’t go back without him. Its only a matter of 2 more days right, I will wait it out here. “

“Very well then,” he said.”We’re here anyway. Ill catch up in the evening, Ive a little work to finish. You guys too should take some rest.”

Shruti and Shatrughan left to their room as Maanvi asked one of their men to do finish off whatever work was left in the kitchen. Bharat didnt stop her unlike how he would have, he was too tired himself.

“Bharat,” she spoke as she sat on one end of the bed, and Bharat on the couch looking at her back and half bright face.

His name sounded so beautiful when it came from her.

“Yes?”

“Can I ask you something?”

“Sure,” he shuddered at her hesitation.

“Wh..What will you do if Ram Bhaiyya doesn’t come here? Or.. if he’s a little late in arriving? I pray with all my heart that that doesn’t happen but..”

“Then you will go back Maanvi,”he spoke.

She turned to face him.

“You will still not…”

“I won’t be able to give you all of myself until I forgive myself, you know that, you know me well Maanvi.”

She sighed.

“I guess.. I will wait, then.”

“I hope I wont have to keep you waiting for long,” he said as he got up and into the washroom, letting the water run fast.

“I hope so too.”

PART 143 A

Dedicated to my dearest Sumi for her Birthday!

The feeling of sand on a ship, when its hits the calm coast, after a long voyage, is a feeling one cannot describe in mere words. It is the feeling of a weary joy, and a tearful new beginning. Its is not followed by yells and screams, but absolute silence on behalf of those aboard it. They try to soak in all they can take in the moment, and for a handful of young few who hadn’t seen land for the last prime 5 years of their lives, it was more than just the completion of a journey. It was the end to their woes, worries and fears. And now, all they wanted to do was to touch land. With all its cracks and crevices and trees and shrubs.. they wanted it all again.

“I.. I think we should dock there,” Ram said pointing to An empty dock area at the offshore area of the long stretch of beach at Kanyakumari, his voice emotional from the excitement.

Sujit and Pawan assembled some men to check the area around while Ram and Lakshman took to the wheel. It was a close opening, and took not much effort.

“50 feet!” Pawan yelled counting down the docking distance although he knew it was visible on the deck meter. He simply couldn’t contain himself anymore.

“40,” said Sujit.

“30,20,10…3,2,1!”

The sound of the steel hull crashing against some hard rocks on the beach surface was the most satisfying thing they had heard in a while. Finally, they were at the land that was calling them; home.

Siya sighed as she looked back at the vast expanse of blue that they had covered and become so used to seeing. A silent thank you was all she could let out, for it having been their only source of touch with what they had left behind.

“AND WE ARE HERE!” Lakshman yelled, to which the entire crew broke their excited silence and rejoiced. All of them hugged each other, a few shedding long awaited tears.

“Lets get the things unloaded before someone from the checkpoint comes here,” Ram said, his heart beating fast, “I don’t want to break the anonymity we’ve maintained till now.”

Pawan nodded as he let down the ladder to the beach and began the unloading.

“Please,” he said to Ram and the others, “you all get down first. I’ll get everything done here, you go and feel the land again.”

Ram didn’t object as he, Lakshman, Siya and Urmila began to descend onto the soft coasts.

As the foot of Rams tattered shoe touched the warm sand, Ram felt a gush of blood run through him. He sighed, looked around as he fought back the tears threatening to spill from his eyes. He stopped for a second before placing his other foot down, and began walking on the sand.

He sat down on his knees on the sand as he let a few drops fall onto the ground.

“We made it, Dad,” he whispered.

He felt a firm hand on his shoulder, as he looked up to see Siya, her warm face hiding the sharpness of the sun and gazing down at him with love and admiration.

“Thank you Siya, we made it,” he said getting up and taking her hands in his.

“I know, I can’t wait to see everyone. We’ve done good for the whole country, lets see if all our efforts have been worthwhile or not,” she smiled, although knowing of the fact that their efforts would be not merely appreciated, but lauded. As deserved.

Lakshman came down with Urmila’s hand in his as she faced the biggest grin she had ever seen on his face. The same twinkle in his eye, that she had so missed and wanted to see in his eyes, was back again and it was as if, slowly, they were finding two two lost children they wanted to be again.

“Urmila,” he whispered, “Were home! I.. I feel like I can run from here to Delhi now! I just can’t..”

Suddenly he stopped, as if to remember a not so solemn fact. The truth of Bharats being. As he turned to see Pawan and the others unloading the goods, some kissing the ground while others rushed to work to go home as soon as possible, he walked up to Ram.

“Bhaiyya,” he said, as Ram turned to hug him, as did Siya with Urmila. Such strong were the bonds amongst themselves that they didn’t allow even a dent to hamper the relation they had kept so cherished since birth.

They broke the hug as Ram paused and looked at Lakshman.

“I know what you are thinking Laksh,” he said as he looked at the work being nearly complete and Pawan talking to one of the dock officials.

“The first thing we do after lunch here,” Ram said,” is to catch a train to Nandi Gram.”

“But Bhaiyya, I thought over it, shouldnt we go home and then go there with everyone? It’ll be happier for Bharat bhaiyya also,” Lakshman added, taking Bharats name in the softest way possible.

“Well, as far as I think, everyone already is there.”

All of them gazed at him with glowing eyes, their hearts beating even faster at the possibility of seeing everyone together, somewhere none of them were supposed to be, unfortunately.

————

“Pawan, I hope the dock official didnt object to us keeping the ship here for the next weeks?”

“No Sir, in fact I didnt even tell him who you were, yet he told me that since we had completed such a long journey, we could keep the ship here for a month and pay the rent later. He had heard Vatika’s name and he said he has helped the few who have managed to escape from there.”

“It feels good to be back in the land where being a good human is the only trait you need to be loved by everyone,” Siya added. “I hope we as a country never ruin this quality of ours.”

“We won’t Bhabi,” Lakshman added excitedly, “I will ensure that myself for the rest of my life..but before that I need to ensure something else..”

“What?” She asked.

“I NEED TO ENSURE THAT I HAVE GOOD FOOD ON MY PLATE! God, I am starving for some tasty food!”

All of them laughed, somehow pushing away the taste of all the menial things they’d eaten to keep themselves all this while.

“True,” Ram added still laughing, “Pawan, you were saying there’s a good place here where we could have lunch? I mean, we don’t have much cash so..”

Pawan smiled.

“Its absolutely okay Sir, I know a place where they wont even bother with the same if you go there. And they will give you the tastiest food you’d have ever eaten.”

“Do you know the owner personally?” Lakshman asked.

Pawan looked down.

“Uh.. well, kind of yes.” His Sir had forbid from revealing his identity in front Ram, if they ever came there or met him otherwise.

“Well then, we should talk to him and request him to take a fee,” Ram said.

“No..No Sir.. I mean..” Pawan was at a loss of words. “I mean, please just come with me, Ill have everything sorted out.”

Ram didnt object, thinking he’d talk to the owner later himself and proceeded. He had complete trust on Pawan, perhaps more than that on himself.

————

“THIS IS THE BEST CURRY IVE EVER HAD,” exclaimed Lakshman as he licked his fingers again and again. All of the others turned to look at him smiling.

“One more Dosa please,” Naishal asked the waiter of the warm, resort like ambienced restaurant.

“For gods sake, you’ve already had 11,” Nilesh joked.

“Its okay,” Siya said,” everyone can have what they want to fill themselves. We’ll take care of it, dont worry and dont hesitate.”

“Okay then, 2 more!” Everyone laughed at Nileshs antics.

“So Pawan, “ Ram asked eating his food, “You were saying there is a train here which stops at Nandi Gram not the way to Delhi?”

“Yes Sir,” he replied. “It leaves at 4.45 pm ship from the station here, so we need to go there immediately once we finish eating. “

Ram nodded. He noticed Pawan silently nodding at some of the waiters and managers, as if he knew them personally.

“Pawan, have you ever stayed here before?”

Pawan smiled.

“Yes sir, actually Ive spent a few years in a hostel here. I think from, 4th to 10th. So I know this place well.”

“Oh, so where did you study?”

Pawan coughed a little. He was bound by word to not reveal his Sirs name, for a reason unknown to him. But he didnt want to lie either, especially when it came to matters of his tutelage under him.

“A professor here, my fathers friend. He is a very nice man.”

“Sure,” Ram replied, understanding that maybe he wasn’t comfortable revealing his teachers name.

“So, is everyone done?”

All of them at the table nodded letting out satisfied sighs and occasional burps.

Ram giggled as Siya and he walked towards the managers counter followed by Pawan.

The manager looked up at them and then at Ram who stood behind them. Pawan signalled to the young man silently and he understood.

So this is the Ram Suryavanshi Sir keeps talking about, he thought.

“Sir.. Your meal is on us today. Please, you needn’t pay,” he said.

Ram was taken aback.

“But..why would you? I mean, I can pay, its okay. And if I have some balance left, Ill surely have the money sent to you..”

“No no sir, its not that. We..” He looked hesitantly at Pawan, “Its just that our owner everyday excuses one meal to be free. He believes it is a part of his duty as a citizen of the country. So he decided that your meal should be free. Please sir, its a part of his daily routine so please don’t be worried.”

“Oh .. I understand,” Siya said, “And we won’t stop him then, but at least let us meet him once then. Let us thank him.”

The manager fell quiet. He didn’t know what to say now.

“Uh Di,” Pawan said, “Actually he is not here. I asked a few people here, they said he’s on tour.”

“So..” Ram sighed. “In that case, do you have a donation box?”

The manager was dumbfounded for a moment after which he brought a small transparent box on which was written “Bhanu Seva Gram Charity” .

Ram smiled as he poured the bill amount into the donation box.

‘Ive heard the name of this Charity somewhere,’ Siya thought to herself.

“See, we are not paying the bill. We are donating this money for the good cause your owner is trying to achieve. Im sure he’s a very good man.”

“Tha..Thank you Sir,” the manager said.

As they turned away, Pawan nodded towards the manager, just when the manager slid him a note on a tissue quietly.

Hiding away, he opened the note.

‘Before leaving, meet Sir. He is in the back garden.’

————

“Pawan, which train was it you we’re talking about?”

“Sir, the Dhanushkodi Express,” he said looking at his watch, “It leaves in an hour and a half.”

“OK then, lets proceed till there, we’ll have to walk. I hope the station not far.”

“No Sir, just a 10 minute walk from here.”

As Ram nodded and turned to move, Pawan stopped for a moment.

“Sir, just give me 2 minutes, I think I left something behind. “

He ran inside, leaving others in a questioned waiting.

“Ill ask Pawan about it when we reach,” Ram thought playfully.

———

“Sir.”

The older man turned his gaze from the flowers he was watering to Pawan.

“You seem to grow taller every time I see you, child.” He laughed as Pawan took his blessings.

Post a moment of silence, Surya asked,

“Have they all eaten well? And I hope they didnt pay?”

“No Sir.. the manager told them about how you excuse one meal for the day usually. Today you excused theirs.”

“That is true, I do excuse a meal. But for them, it’s different. Ram…he’s like my son. You can never take money from your son, can you?”

Pawan nodded.

“I think you have to take your leave now.”

“ I will sir, but please tell me, how do you know him?”

Surya smiled as he patted him on the back.

“I will tell you when the time comes. Now go, Bharat must be waiting for you all.”

Pawan sighed as he touched his feet again and left. He would know, soon.

——-

“Settle yourselves in the bunks carefully, the trains empty but still be careful. Its a matter of 20 hours, so make yourselves comfortable.”

As the train started, Ram and the others in the coupe found themselves looking out of the window the whole while almost, living in the beauty of what they had missed.

“A lot has..changed.” Siya said. “For the better, surely.”

“True di,” Urmila spoke, “I just hope everything at home is the same.”

“Shruti,” Shatrughan said smiling at her. “You’ll know when they come, there’s no need to look out of the window. We still have one day, you know.”

Shruti turned back to look at him cutely as he dusted off some dirt from the table. Maanvi straightened the curtains of the living room and Bharat got some food ready.

“Now come and help me with the mini garden outside the front door,” Shatrughan said as Shruti followed him.

All of them were doing the best they could do to make the house presentable for them. They didn’t want Ram to see how Bharat had really been living, as well as give them a warm vibe to their welcome.

Bharat came outside, his forehead sweating as he saw Maanvi struggling with a curtain in one corner of their room. It was at Bharats height, who stood a few inches taller than even the tallest one of the Seerdhwajs, Maanvi. He walked upto her and without calling her out, merely stretched his hand over hers and pulled the curtain to one side.

“T..Thanks,” she whispered still enlaced in his presence around her.

“Sure,” he replied and turned to leave, just when Maanvi spoke.

“Why do you have those pills kept in your drawer Bharat?”

So she had seen those pills. He’d never taken any of them of course, despite his doctor recommending a small dose for his sleep.

“For my sleep Maanvi, Dr. Gupta had recommended them.”

She turned.

“Please Bharat, do whatever you want to, but don’t lie to me about them. And dont ever think of anything else…”

“Maanvi I…”

“No, just, no.”

She walked off to the other side of the room, fearing what Bharat could have ever done having gone out of control without anyone around. Bharat walked back into the kitchen slowly.

‘Ive hurt you too, too much.’

——

It was the next day, the last day they have to wait, and all of them had finished their lunch. They cleared up everything and waited eagerly for the family theyd not seen for so long. 5 long years.

How’d they look? Would they be the same, or would they have grown thinner or fatter? Most important, would they love them the same way they did before? Everyone pondered silently but no-one dared to speak out loud.

Bharat looked at the clock again and again. He grew increasingly anxious by the minute but didnt open his mouth for a second. All of them looked at him and could sense him all too well.

“Bhai, calm down,” Shatrughan said,”They’ll be here soon.”

“I won’t .. if they dont come I wont…” he whispered under his breath.

Shatrughan got up and sat next to him.

“Bhai, what are you murmuring? Please, calm down.. We all are here, they’ll be here soon.”

“Calm down?! How can I calm down Shatrughan ?!”

Everyone was taken aback to see that side of Bharat, that had come out only on the day his whole life had changed in front of eyes.

“You know what it feels to be worthless Shatrughan? I do. You know how it feels to abandon the people you love the most and live alone?! You know how it feels to not be able to look anyone in the eye while talking because you feel you have no worth?! I do. And I’ve felt like this ever since I was a child, and what happened after that was just the fuel it needed to burn me down.

I can’t calm down my brother, until and unless I see myself of worth again. Until I am forgiven, and if they dont come today.. I will… I Will put and End to this once and for all.”

As Bharat walked towards his room, Maanvi sensed what he was trying to do as she asked Shatrughan to stop him.

Shatrughan walked up in front of him and held him by the shoulders.

“Stop it Bhai! Come back to your senses!! What you’re doing is what a coward does, running away. Face it Bhai, just a little while more. Just a little.”

Bharat stopped as he broke down in Shatrguhans arms.

“I..I can’t…I…”

Shruti clasped Maanvi from her shoulders as Maanvi mere looked down and calmed her beating heart. She was angry, but above all, she was worried. All of them had had enough..

Just then, all of them fell quiet and heard the sound of rustling the leaves outside, accompanied by the sound of quiet hushing.

All of them rushed outside and stood at the main gate. The few guards they had brought with them positioned themselves into defence should it be an infiltrator. The bright setting shone, but all of managed to look beyond the wheat plants in the hope of seeing the few their eyes wanted to.

A while passed, but the sounds seemed to drown.

“I dont think, it was them.” Shatrughan said. “Maybe we were so exited, we misheard something. “

“True,” Maanvi said. “They near, I can feel it. But I suggest we go back again.”

Just as they turned, they heard the sound again.

They stopped and turned as they saw figures emerge out of the greens.

Clad in a heavy beard, a man with long hair and the other bearded with ruffled browns. And following them, two thin but graceful strong women.

They’d almost have to be mistaken, if it hadn’t been for their eyes. Their innocent, teary, tired yet happy eyes.

As everyone came stand in front of Bharat and the others, the eyes gave it all away.

“It seems like we had lost our way,” Ram said in a broken voice. “But we have found it now.”
