PART 142
8 Days Later
The shores roared as if in a welcoming tune, glistening golden at this time of the year with no turbulences whatsoever . But what glistened brighter than the golden yellow specks of dust off the water were the eyes of the ones seeing their home, their motherland, their life ahead, after what seemed like an eternity.
“Its so sunny today,” Siya said as she came to stand next to Ram on the deck. Land was approximately 2 hours away, and all of them came to stand ahead to catch a glimpse of the shores of Kanyakumari, the same place where Pawan had landed to make his endeavour of saving Lakshman’s life possible. But for the others, the green and golden dunes smelt and felt like home.
“Guess Ill need some getting used to this sunlight..” Siya giggled off but Ram comprehended the deeper meaning of what she had spoken. It would take some time, getting used to being Siya Seerdhwaj and Ram Suryavanshi again. He silently slid his hand next to Siyas free hand, the other one of which sheltered her eyes in an attempt to get a look at the lands clearly.
“Bhaiyya,” Lakshman spoke as he came near him Urmila, his hand entwined with hers.
Ram looked at him as the two brothers shared a silent nod.
They’d made it. Through thick and thin. Through everything. Despite everything that had happened, Ram had kept his promise to his parents. He looked around, noting how everyone stared at the expanse of the land with the same yearning in their minds. Some had left behind parents, children, partners… some had no one left for them but had made lifelong friends. It would be something they’d done not for themselves, but for their whole nation. For the betterment of the whole world.
They’d have to face repercussions, yes, but that meant nothing in front of their joy and pride.
Siya looked down at the radar and smiled.
“Ram,” she called out.
Ram looked at her as she pointed to the yellow dot flickering, counting in reverse as the kilometres lessened.
“One hour, friends!” Ram called out looking at everyone cheering and hastening up.
Urmila placed her hand on her heart and looked at Siya, just like how she would as a child, losing her speech in excitement and only speaking through her eyes.
“We’re here,” Siya mouthed.
Pawan walked slowly upto Ram as both of them turned to look at Pawan.
“Sir, Maam, I had something to say to you and Lakshman Sir and Urmila Maam as well.”
Ram was about to speak, when Siya spoke in,
“Di, Pawan. Maam makes me sound like I am no one special to you. Ive already told you thrice,” she smiled.
Pawan smiled back.
“Sure… I mean it will get some time to be used to but.. I will.. Di.”
“There you go,” she replied.
Rams heart filled with happiness seeing them like this. He could see his family in him, and Pawan was now no less.
“By the way Pawan, you were telling us something?”
“Yes, sir.”
Ram called Lakshman and Urmila as they stood in a circle.
“So… I think Ive said this before too… but the time was such… I think I didn’t say it all.”
“Wh..what do you mean Pawan?” Lakshman asked.
He took a pause as he began.
“Well, I told you that, when Id come here, I met Bharat Sir, right?”
“WHAT?!” Everyone except Ram exclaimed. Siya and Urmila were of course unaware, and Lakshman given the state he was in, must have forgotten. And somehow, they never brought up the topic amongst themselves in these few days. Not that they didnt have greater fearful thoughts to tend to.
“I .. I remember,” Ram said,”And I deliberately didnt tell anyone of you. You might have felt worried.. about what he’d be doing without Maanvi and the others here for a few days but I know him, he must have told them before coming…”
“Actually…” Pawan cut off apologetically. “Here is where.. the problem lies. Theres something, I didnt tell you Sir.”

/FLASHBACK TO THE DAY THE FAMILY ARRIVED AT BHARATS RESIDENCE
“OH MY GOD,” Shatrughan exclaimed as he sat up In his bed in their room, midday, owing to their late travel and arrival.
“What happened?” Shruti asked sitting up slowly.
“Shruti… as far as I remember seeing his room… it’s not a double bed. “
“What do you…. OH!” Shruti shook her head as she understood.
Shatrughan looked at her helplessly.
“I had one job, literally. I was just so tired I didnt even bother to… damn it.”
“And I didnt even check the room properly, “ she sulked. “One of them is either sleeping on the sofa outside or on the floor…. I didnt even check if Bhaiyya had a couch in that room..”
Both of them shot up after a moment and raced to the living room, only to find no one there.
“You wanted something?”
Both of them turned around to be met by Bharat coming out of the kitchen, oil stains on his apron.
“Bhai,” Shatrughan walked up. “You didnt even Bother to tell us didnt you?”
“W..what?” He asked, perfectly understanding what he meant.
Shatrughan kept quiet for a few moments waiting for him to atleast act like he understood, but spoke for himself.
“Please shift to that room. Shruti and I wont have any problem. The two of you need your space.”
Bharat smiled looking away.
“We have our space, lots of it.” The hint of sad sarcastic dejection was evident in him.
“Please Bhaiyya” Shruti spoke. “This is not a time for the two of you to keep moving away from each other. Ive seen it in her eyes, how much she loves you.”
It was just then that all of them turned around to the sound of the door to Bharats room creaking open, Maanvi looking at them with bloodshot eyes.
It was evident neither of them had had any sleep.
“No need Shruti, Im comfortable here.”
“Me too,” Bharat added.
Shatrughan eyed the two of them staring intently at each other. For heavens sake, he thought, they NEEDED to talk. Talk their hearts out.
“No, the two of you will shift to that room. Shruti and I won’t have any problem. We’ve talked over this.”
“Im Okay here,” Maanvi spoke.
“Im okay, too.” Bharat replied without breaking his gaze for a second. Either felt the other was unwilling to close the gap, when truly, the only thing that stood between themselves was, their aching hearts itself.
Shatrughan shook his head pushing back his tears of anger and desperation.
“Whatever you wish.” He said as she stormed back off into his room, Shruti following him dejectedly behind, leaving Maanvi and Bharat standing to themselves.
“You..you didnt sleep?” She asked taking a few steps ahead.
“Did.. you?” Bharat asked coming ahead, a fraction.
“Its too uncomfortable for you like that..” She added.
Another step.
“No, I often sleep there. Im sorry for the dirty room, I know you’re not used to this..”
Another fraction.
“There are a lot of things I wasn’t used to. I am now, I guess.”
“Same here, willingly or unwillingly.” He gulped as he now stood right in front of her, his slow breath fanning her neck as she looked up slowly.
So close, yet so far. Bharat slowly raised his hand to her arms, her eyes darting around his face when..
“BEEEEEPPPP!”
Bharat tore away as she blinked and cleared his throat.
“The smoke alarm… I probably short circuited the induction again… I…”
Maanvi nodded hurriedly catching her breath.
“Ill get it sorted,” he said. “Don’t come in the kitchen.”
“But..”
“No. It’s not safe. Just get me the pliers from the drawer in my room.”
Maanvi moved away back into the room and through her blurry eyes fumbled for the pliers. She took a deep breath as she ran the events over her mind again. She was so close to him yet…
She got him the pliers only to see Bharat having fixed the loose switch himself and checking the metre box.
“Its okay, I already did it.”
“Oh, okay.” She said walking back, As Bharat clenched his other hand in pain From a shock.
“I shouldn’t tell her.. She’d be more troubled,” he whispered, moving around to find an ointment for himself, all as Maanvi watched silently.
/FLASHBACK ENDS

AT the Deck
“I..I didn’t tell you all this because it would have only made you distraught. I understood you needed some time to yourselves first and thats why.. Please don’t be angry with me. I didnt mean to hurt you. It was best that I said it now.”
All of them looked at each other, as Lakshman shook his head in anger and cluched the deck railings tightly. His Bharat Bhaiyya, the one who had been the most sensitive, the most kind hearted, how could he desert all of them like that?! And Maanvi.. what would she have felt like?
“I can’t believe, Bharat Bhaiyya.. “
Urmila gulped. She knew how Maanvi was. No, it definitely wasn’t easy for her, or wasn’t going to be either.
“Where is he now?” Ram asked.
“He didnt tell me the exact place, but he said its where your first house was..”
“Our first house is in Ayodhya itself…” Lakshman stopped as he seemed to remember something and looked at Ram who already knew.
He sighed as he held Pawans shoulders.
“Its okay Pawan, Im sure we can make things alright. I know where he is. Once we reach land, we’ll go to him first.”
Please, let us reach faster, Siya prayed.
————————
Shruti helped Bharat clear away the dishes post their minimal lunch as Maanvi put the leftovers into the fridge.
“Two days, can you believe it, 2 more DAYS ONLY!” Shruti chirped lightening everyones mood around, except a solemn Bharat.
“Bhai, “ Shatrughan said to Bharat,” I still think we should be back home before he comes here, if he does know the address somehow.”
Bharat smiled.
“Ive told you Shatrughan, I can’t go back without him. Its only a matter of 2 more days right, I will wait it out here. “
“Very well then,” he said.”We’re here anyway. Ill catch up in the evening, Ive a little work to finish. You guys too should take some rest.”
Shruti and Shatrughan left to their room as Maanvi asked one of their men to do finish off whatever work was left in the kitchen. Bharat didnt stop her unlike how he would have, he was too tired himself.
“Bharat,” she spoke as she sat on one end of the bed, and Bharat on the couch looking at her back and half bright face.
His name sounded so beautiful when it came from her.
“Yes?”
“Can I ask you something?”
“Sure,” he shuddered at her hesitation.
“Wh..What will you do if Ram Bhaiyya doesn’t come here? Or.. if he’s a little late in arriving? I pray with all my heart that that doesn’t happen but..”
“Then you will go back Maanvi,”he spoke.
She turned to face him.
“You will still not…”
“I won’t be able to give you all of myself until I forgive myself, you know that, you know me well Maanvi.”
She sighed.
“I guess.. I will wait, then.”
“I hope I wont have to keep you waiting for long,” he said as he got up and into the washroom, letting the water run fast.
“I hope so too.”
