In my knowledge, it has worked once for my favourite show in this world i.e. Brooklyn 99. It was cancelled by Fox. But fans protested so much that it got picked up by another channel NBC is less than 12 hrs from cancellation. So it's not entirely impossible. But in B99's case, even many celebrities ( like Mark Hamill and Seth Rogen) were fans and they also joined the Twitter protest.

So I personally don't see this working out in this situation.
