PART 141
PART 141
Siya saw large waves approaching her. They were larger than the hull, coming over her head and fearfully grey in the night sky. Having suddenly opened her eyes in the darkness, everything appeared blurry.
‘Ram,” she called out, “Don’t go!!”
“No Siya, I need to save the deck’s maps!!!”
But before she could hear, a huge wave came crashing down on him, swiping him away into its unknown depths.
“RAAAAMM!” She yelled out, and not a moment later, felt fresh salt water run into her mouth as she heard the ship crack into two. And when she looked down from the splitting hull, she saw Trijana, her eyes calling her for help.
“I… I don’t…I dont want to die without…”
“SIYA!”
Siyas eyes flew open as a drop of sweat fell from her nose onto Rams Palm. Ram put an arm around her as Siya gulped and took in the surroundings.
“Its okay Siya, it was just a nightmare.. Calm down, I’m here. You’re okay.. we all are okay.”
After a moment or two of silence, Siya moved away as she wiped her face and managed a smile.
“I dreamt the ship was breaking apart and you..”
“Its okay Siya, you don’t need to go over it again,” Rams eyes carried plea and understanding for her. “You’re just tired from everything, the journey. It’ll take a few more days , thats it.”
She sighed. “I know Ram.. but In the dream I saw her. Trijana Ji… I just hope shell be okay there. “
Ram ran his hand over her back. “She decided to be there herself… she’ll be alright. Our prayers are with her.. She will be okay.”
/FLASHBACK/
(AT Vatika, Ram and the others approach the dense woods)
“I saw her here, I can swear on it,” Ram said astounded. Just a few moments ago, he had seen a woman finding her way through the thick bristles, and he assumed with confidence it was Trijana, which is why he had led the others here. But now, she was no where to be seen.
“I.. I dont know.. Ill be surprised to even find her well here…” Siya doubted looking around.
Just then, they all heard a sudden rustle of the leaves and turned their heads. And from the same direction, a sound of faint sobbing.
“Should we…” Urmila whispered to which they all slowly approached the sound. Despite having come out of war, they couldn’t help their protective instincts.
As they turned around, they were met with a frail woman sitting on her knees, wrinkled and dusty, tired eyes but solemn. And unmistakably the woman they were searching for.
“Trijana ji!”
SIya and Urmila lunged onto her hands and clasped them tightly as all three women shared light waves of both joy and hitting sorrow.
“Thank god, thank god we found you here..” Siya said.
“We thought you were..” Urmila couldnt finish her sentence.
Trijana wiped her years as she braved a smile.
“The day I was taken away, I was kept with a few others here, away from anyones sight, under this tree. For 4 days, I had nothing to eat. Then, I heard sounds of blaring gunshots and fires. Those who kept us tied ran themselves.. One poor man amongst them, cut all our ropes and asked us to flee, but when he was running away himself, someone from Raghvans army itself shot him, thinking him to be an enemy. I feared, if Id go out, I wouldn’t ever be Able to see you again… So I’ve been here since. Waiting for everything to be over. And it was only yesterday that I came to know, that the war was over. But honestly.. I dint feel like coming out anymore. I felt broken and tired, and I now want to spend my last days here itself. “
“But.. you must come with us!” Siya said. “Were going back home.. we will take you to your village, you can stay with your family..”
“I dont think Id have anyone left now. Im too tired to sail across, mentally and physically. It is best if you go and leave me here. Dont worry, Ill be my best here, for as long as I live. Not very long I hope.”
Their eyes brimmed for her, but they knew her resolve.
“But.. there Is no one here..” Urmila spoke softly.
She moved slowly back into the makeshift hut, forbidding anybody from coming closer.
“Your love and prayers are enough for me..” She had said, before they all came out after paying their respects to the grit of the woman.
/FLASHBACK ENDS/
“Siya?”
Siya moved out of her flashback as she looked at Ram again.
“I just hope, she has a peaceful life, whatever is ahead of her.”
“I do too,” Ram said as he made her fall back on the creaky mattress, covering her with a thin blanket.
“Im right here, Siya. Next to you. Everything will be fine..now go back to sleep.”
Siya nodded as she clasped into Rams chest tightly.
“Everything will be fine,” she whispered.
————————
“Everything will be fine,” Shruti whispered as the car etched into the doorway on Bharats house. It has been a long drive, and it was early dawn, slight chirpings were the only sound that could be heard. The cars roaring engine seemed to disturb the silence and it died only as the other cars came and stopped behind it.
“Bharat.. he won’t be angry right?” Maanvi asked worried, her heart forcing its way out of her chest.
Shrutis heart wrenched at the sight of her sister. She has always been the most headstrong, the most professional and charming amongst the 4 of them. But maybe tats what led her to wear the mask that was coming away now.. one had made her appear free from worries from everyone else. She too had a heart, and a very deep one at that. She loved fiercely, and she wouldn’t let anything touch that.
Shatrughan turned around and looked at Shruti, then at her.
“He won’t be, Di, I assure you. After seeing you, he won’t. He may never say it, but I know how much he loves you.”
Maanvi fluttered a nod, just as they saw the lights in his house being turned on.
“He’s awake,” Shatrughan said. “Lets get down.”
They got down slowly and stood.
“Who is it!” Bharat almost yelled from the inside. “Please, do not disturb at this hour. I can’t attend to you now. Come later.”
Maanvi breath etched in her throat. All of them remained quiet, waiting for him to come out.
“WHO is it, tell me please!” He asked again, but Shatrughan ordered everyone to be quiet. There were no windows to the front side, so the only way he could see who had come was to come out.
Finally, they heard the sound of the doors unlocking.
“Who is it I ask…” He came out angry with the flashlight in one hand and stopped when the light fell on her face.
He gulped when he took in a moment to absorb everything. It had been a near 9 months since he’d seen any of them, after he had sent a strict order to Shatrughan from them coming here. He knew it was a dangerous place, and didn’t want any trouble for them.
It wasn’t visible in the darkness, but only he could see with the light on her face, at how a single tear Rolled down her cheek and onto the ground. His clasp on the flashlight tightened as he found himself heaving for breath.
He pulled his eyes way with great force to look at Shtarughan and Shruti who looked back at him in a similar shock. His eyes were sunken, his hair was white in the edges. His beard, unkempt, and his unique golden brown curls came till his cheek, ruffled.
“Bhai,” Shatrughan said softly, taking a few steps ahead, “Its time to go home. Only 10 days are left now, and we all should be home before they come back, shouldn’t we?”
Bharat put the flashlight down as the sun slowly began to rise and he could see them much clearly. He saw the convoy of cars and realised they’d come prepared to take him.
“We will all be together, yes,” he said calmly,” But not there. I will not step in the Suryavanshi house until and unless Ram Bhaiyya comes here and takes me. Until I can ask for forgiveness from him.”
“You can ask for that forgiveness from him at home too right? Dont you think he’ll be happier to see you there?” Shatrughan pleaded.
“He may be, but for this once, I will think about myself. I will not move from here lest he comes here. And I know he will.”
“Be realistic Bhai!” Shatrughan came ahead. “ I doubt he even knows where you are, that you are away from us.”
It felt like a pang to his heart, but Bharat had lost emotional sense, logic for that matter. He wanted forgiveness first.
“He will, I trust him. You all can go back. I will come with him.” Saying so, he took a few steps back looking down.
Shatrughan and Shruti looked at Maanvi, who had been quietly watching him all the while. Only she could do something.
“Shatrughan,” she said firmly wiping the unnoticed tear, which made Bharat stop and look at her. She looked right back at him as she asked,
“You said you’ve brought all our things right? Enough to suffice for 10 days?”
Shatrughan and Shruti gleamed and nodded as Bharat looked on Shocked. He had suspected something, although. He knew his family wouldn’t leave him alone.. they were unlike him.
“Then.. if we may Bharat..” The name sounded new to her again, now that she said it in front of him, “Stay in your house for this while?”
Bharat was dumbstruck.
“There are a lot of dangers.. I would say..”
“May we?” She asked again, her voice trembling.
Bharat sighed. He knew, his mind may say no, but in his heart was the most deep, resounding Yes.
“Okay,” he said as he led them in.
Shruti smiled as she followed him quietly, with Maanvi behind her as Shatrughan arranged for the things to be brought in.
—————
“Bhai..” Shatrughan gleamed as he hugged Bharat inside the house. He looked around during the embrace as he saw the broken walls and dusted furniture. He had always been the one who’d ensure that the rest of them stayed comfortably whenever they’d go on trips, and loved to decorate his office and room, being the artist that he was. But now..
Bharat hugged him back and fought back a tear.
“Its okay.. Im sorry I made you wait back here.. because of me.”
Shatrughan broke away.
“When you live with family, no place seems small.”
Bharat managed a smile. How he’d experienced that himself, if only he could spill his heart out.
“Im happy to see you Bhaiyya,” Shruti said softly.
Bharat smiled a placed his hand over her head.
“You too dear,” he replied.
Shatrughan glanced at Shruti, and she blinked understanding what he meant.
“Which room did you say we should go in, bhai? Its been a long journey, I really need some rest.”
“Sure,” Bharat nodded and led them to their room.
“I hope it’ll be okay, theres a washroom there.. I dont use it regularly so.. “Bharat said to them in one of the two rooms In the house.
“Dont worry, it’ll be perfect for us,” Shatrughan said genuinely. “You go and take rest too.”
Bharat nodded as he came out.
“I hope they bond before Bhaiyyas back,” Shatrughan whispered as he turned.
He silently led Maanvi into his room, the one with the balcony, which had been his only recluse.
Both of them stared at the bed, which Bharat had forgotten, was a single bed, and there was no way the two of them could fit into.
He sighed.
“Im.. Im sorry. I can’t do anything right.. “ He said.
Maanvi stood next to him, close enough to feel his skin against her arm but not as close as she wanted herself to be.
“Please, dont do this to yourself. Theres no point in blaming yourself when you have no option. Let that room be to them.. Ill sleep on the couch here.”
“No,” he immediately said. “You won’t. I will. Its not even a proper couch.. you’ll be uncomfortable. “
“You too Bharat,” she said. “And you’re taller than me, you won’t fit. Ill sleep there, I won’t have a problem.”
She walked towards it, when she felt a tug at her hand. It was brief, he left it as fast as he held her hand, but it was long enough to awaken her heart from where it was.
“I have a lot of forgiveness pending from you too Maanvi, perhaps more than what I have from Bhaiyya.. so please, dont make me feel more guilty.”
He sighed as she took a pillow and sat on the couch at the foot of the bed.
He looked down.
“Ive made the bed. Take rest Maanvi, you have to wait it out here for 10 more days. If you need anything , let me know. Please, dont think about this. Take rest.”
Maanvi put her head down, taking in his scent left on the pillows as a tear ran down onto the whites. She turned away hiding her face.
“If only you knew, I was never angry on you at all.”
“If only you knew, how much I wanted to hold your arms,” Bharat regretted as he turned the other way too, and dreamt with eyes wide open.
