PART 140 :)

Dawn came about early, as if itself not wanting to delay the send off into the calm waters of the Indian Ocean.

Malini, Veer and Ketaki came at the shores, of whom both except Ketaki carried signs of sorrow yet an excitement for their new journey.

“Lakshman, have you checked the roster for the all the items on board?”

“Pawan, just go to Sujit once and ask him if he’s checked the base of the deck once again… even a small creak is unwanted..”

“Sushen ji, are there any more supplies required? If anything else if left please let Me know now…”

“Ram! My child..” Sushen laughing held him by the shoulders and patted him. “Calm down my son.. I know you are eager to head back home, and trust me we all are.. but we musn’t rush… in this way we’ll have greater chances of leaving things behind.. calm down.. Everyone is working hands on since last night.. We are sure to have a healthy voyage.. you go and talk to Veer and the others.. We will call you when everything is ready.”

Ram sighed as he laughed and ran his fingers through his hair.

“I know Sushen ji.. Im sorry.. Its just that, I can’t hold myself back any longer.. Ill go to them, please let me know if you need anything.”

Sushen nodded as he set off and Lakshman came jogging up to him.

“Bhaiyya, I checked the roster and Ive handed it to Naishal for a final confirmation.. he’s going through it again in case I missed something..”

“You won’t miss anything, I know,” Ram said acknowledging him. “Please just get your Bhabi and Urmi and ask them to come to meet Malini ji and the others.. we will set off now .”

Lakshman gleamed as he sprinted across the golden sands to the women, as Ram came to where the three stood.

He folded his hands in front of Ketaki and looked down.

“Ma’am, I hope you may remain with well being here. And if at any time you wish to come home, please do send a message through Veer.. I Will Make All the arrangements required.”

Ketaki looked away and gulped.

“I will try my best to be ‘well’ here, with the memories that I have. And as for me going back.. I will never. My ashes will go into these waters with my sons. But I wish you a good journey, for now and ahead…” Her voice trailed off as she walked back to the mansion, the others in silence.

Ram turned to look at Malini, who returned a small smile and looked at Lakshman and the others who had come to stand next to Ram.

“Stay well,” Siya and Urmila said to Malini as Siya embraced her with all honesty.

“You too, my dear..” Malini replied. “You too, Urmila. Never leave each others sides.”

The four of them looked at each other in a quick glance and nodded.

Never again. They had vowed to all that was sacred.

Ram walked to Veer and shook his hand.

“As I had said Veer, if at any time, any help is needed, please do not hesitate. “

“I will not, I assure you,” Veer replied. “And you too Sir, we are always are your service.”

Ram nodded.

“And Veer, do give life another chance, if possible. Who knows, what it has in store for you.”

The others unaware talked of the voyage ahead, while Veer and Ram silently kept a secret of the past deep In their hearts, waiting to see what a game fate would play.

——

“All aboard?!” Pawan yelled from the top deck of the ship.

“Aye! Lakshman Sir, Ram Sir, all are aboard!” Sujit added.

All of them turned to look at the ship, lovingly named Pushpak by Pawan as an ode to Lord Rama eons ago returning to Ayodha in Treta, stood gracefully over the still blue waters, waiting to lunge back to the land they called home.

“I guess it’s time,” Ram said.

“Their couldnt have been a better one…” Siya added as the four of them walked towards the ship with quickened pace.

Siya stepped in first, followed by Ram. Urmila placed her foot on the steppe, waiting to be aided by Lakshman to be pushed up the high deck, when she found him quickly stuffing something into his pocket and coming towards her.

He didn’t speak as her supported Urmila up and placed himself comfortably on the deck as well, releasing the anchor from the sand below as the official mark for the ship to be released.

“What were you doing Laksh?” Urmila asked quietly as the engines of Pushpak began to roar.

Lakshman smiled after a moment as she slowly pulled out a few grains of yellow and shell rich sand from his pocket. Shells were especially hard to find on the beach, yet he handed one to Urmila and clasped her hand tightly.

“Im taking back a few pieces of this with me. I will make an hourglass out of this sand. It’ll remind me for the rest of my life, how every moment of it is precious, and how I will spend every moment of what I have left with you all.”

Urmila looked at the shell and gulped. She was about to express herself when the sounds of the hull came roaring and she heard Ram yell,

“Depart! India, here we come!!”

She turned to look back the Malini and Veer who waved back, and then at Lakshman, who was already looking deep into her eyes, as if having found answers to all the questions he could have ever asked.

She held onto his hand tighter as she realised, what she wanted to say had already been spoken of.

—————-

4 days later

“So, how much time more do you think we will need Bhaiyya?”

Lakshman asked as he handed him a fresh coconut to drink from. Ram struck it open and took a sip as the four of them relaxed on the main deck, surrounded by nothing but a gigantic mass of sea and twinkling stars, which seemed scarily abundant in this expanse.

“Well, the gods of weather seem to be in our favour. I had planned 18 to days initially, but I guess we can make it to Kanyakumari in 15 days if we can navigate correctly using the route we came and if the winds work with us.”

Lakshman nodded. They turned to look at Siya, who kept the fruit away and ran her hand over Urmilas back.

“Urmi, are you feeling okay? Are you feeling sea sick or..”

“ No di, nothing like that..” She said. “Its just that.. Those flashes came to me for a while..that day in Manali, the same and of ship they brought us in..”

“Hey..” Siya broke in softly. “Its okay, forget about it. I understand its very difficult for either of us to forget what happened but, you can’t take these memories back with you to begin a new life Urmi. A new beginning requires a new approach. And you’d tell me, your favourite book is The Alchemist, right?”

Urmila nodded slowly.

“Then you remember what it had to say right? It said that ‘the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself, what is meant to happen will, and lead you to your treasure.’ What has happened in some way, has brought us closer. You and me, you and Laksh, and the rest of us waiting back home. Don’t let anything loosen that, okay?”

Urmila tightly clasped Siya as she smiled.

“I love you Di, for being you.”

As she broke apart, Siya noticed Ram looking at her with eyes of admiration . Really, he was grateful for what she was, and to have her that way.

“Okay then, I think we should go to bed now. Estimated sunrise at 4.15 tomorrow, so we have to wake up early,“ Lakshman spoke. “And from what I understand, our little wimpy kid needs to have a night of good rest.”

“Hey! Im not a wimpy kid! I told you to stop calling me that!” Urmila chimed in.

“But I didnt even say it was you, you assumed..” Lakshman giggled as he stood up, wishing them a good night and retiring to his and Urmila’s cabin, with Urmila threatening him with the most sweetest of consequences if he repeated those names again.

Ram inched closer to Siya, in an attempt to keep the act hidden, but she noticed him even before anyone else could and bit her lip to her smile.

Ram noticed the same as she chuckled and threw his hand around her shoulder, allowing her to rest her head on his arm.

“Sometimes Laksh is this little kid, and sometimes he grows into this mature man that I can’t even recognise. He’s learnt to control his anger though, thanks to Urmila.”

“True,” Siya added. “We’ve all changed each other in so many ways. I never knew I was so .. strong. I know it sounds like a self praise, but I don’t think I could have made it this far without any of you. And I hope its for the better for all of us. “

Ram placed a light kiss on her forehead as she looked up at him.

“You’re the best thing that has happened to me,” he said softly.

Siya smiled as she yawned Into his chest.

“The others have slept, I think we should go too,” Ram spoke helping Siya up as the two walked to their cabin.

“I dont know what Ill do when I see them, Ram. My Maanvi, Shruti, Bharat, Shatrughan.. they’re pieces of my soul. How much they’d have grown up, and changed.”

“Like you said Siya, all that happens, happens for the best. Dont worry, we’ll meet them soon.”

————

“Yeh sab pack kardijiye car mein Ramu bhaiyya, saheb aate hi hum ravana ho jayenge..”

Shruti eyed the bags once again, packed with essentials they’d need for the next 10 days to live in the so called wilderness. How had Bharat bhaiyya managed to live there, she continued to think.

“Ji Madam,” he responded efficiently. “Aap sab jab ayenge, ghar bhara lagega, pehle jaisa..”

Shruti smiled and nodded. ‘Pehle jaysa.’ How shed craved for the day to come, only she knew.

As Ramu descended the stairs, she packed her diary and wallet in her hand bag as she turned swiftly again to be met by a panting Shatrughan at the door.

Like his routine, he smiled at Shruti as he ran to the calendar striking the day off, and after a moments pause, the next 10days in advance. He threw the marker away as he stood smiling at her.

“The next time we’ll be back, if I’m not wrong, in the next 10 days and 11 nights, we won’t need this anymore.”

Shruti nodded giving him a glass of water which he gulped quickly.

“Hey, slow down.. They’ve packed everything.. Maanvi Dis stuff too.. only she doesn’t know yet..”

Shatrughan held her by the shoulders and looked into her eyes, with a joy Shruti had seen after a long time.

“And dont tell her either.. as soon as she comes, she’ll go with us.”

“I hope Bharat bhaiyya doesn’t mind…”

“He won’t, I know” Shatrughan said, “In fact, he’ll be the one most eager. Now go down, I’ll change and come. “

Shruti nodded as she stepped down quickly. Just as she sat in, she noticed Maanvis car rolling in and her stepping out quietly, her coat wound around her body, less from the cold and more from the bubble shed kept herself in.

She opened the door and called out.

“Hey! Di! Come here!!!”

Maanvi looked up surprised and before she could ask anything was made to sit inside the car.

“Wh..what are you doing? What is going on?!”

She noticed Shatrughan running ahead and quickly he came and placed himself In the front passenger seat, signalling the driver to speed off.

“Guys?! What is going on? Where are we going? All my stuff is in my room..”

“Ive packed everything..” Shruti pointed to the convoy of cars behind.

“Shatrughan,” Shruti asked, “You told Badi Ma and Choti ma right?”

He nodded. “I did. I asked them to come too, but they said theyd rather stay back and make arrangements.”

It was then that Maanvi began to make sense of everything. She knew deep in her heart, an end to 5 years was only 10 days away.

“Are we going to…” Her words trailed off, her heart pained everytime she took his name.

“Yes, Di. To Bharat Bhaiyya s place. We will together from there with him. Im sorry I didnt tell you earlier.. I thought..”

“Well.. Im glad in a way you didnt. Or else..”

My heart wouldn’t have made up the courage, she said to herself.

“He’ll be glad to see you,” Shatrughan added.

Maanvi smiled.

‘I know, but I will be happier,’ she whispered.

PART 141

PART 141

Siya saw large waves approaching her. They were larger than the hull, coming over her head and fearfully grey in the night sky. Having suddenly opened her eyes in the darkness, everything appeared blurry.

‘Ram,” she called out, “Don’t go!!”

“No Siya, I need to save the deck’s maps!!!”

But before she could hear, a huge wave came crashing down on him, swiping him away into its unknown depths.

“RAAAAMM!” She yelled out, and not a moment later, felt fresh salt water run into her mouth as she heard the ship crack into two. And when she looked down from the splitting hull, she saw Trijana, her eyes calling her for help.

“I… I don’t…I dont want to die without…”

“SIYA!”

Siyas eyes flew open as a drop of sweat fell from her nose onto Rams Palm. Ram put an arm around her as Siya gulped and took in the surroundings.

“Its okay Siya, it was just a nightmare.. Calm down, I’m here. You’re okay.. we all are okay.”

After a moment or two of silence, Siya moved away as she wiped her face and managed a smile.

“I dreamt the ship was breaking apart and you..”

“Its okay Siya, you don’t need to go over it again,” Rams eyes carried plea and understanding for her. “You’re just tired from everything, the journey. It’ll take a few more days , thats it.”

She sighed. “I know Ram.. but In the dream I saw her. Trijana Ji… I just hope shell be okay there. “

Ram ran his hand over her back. “She decided to be there herself… she’ll be alright. Our prayers are with her.. She will be okay.”

/FLASHBACK/

(AT Vatika, Ram and the others approach the dense woods)

“I saw her here, I can swear on it,” Ram said astounded. Just a few moments ago, he had seen a woman finding her way through the thick bristles, and he assumed with confidence it was Trijana, which is why he had led the others here. But now, she was no where to be seen.

“I.. I dont know.. Ill be surprised to even find her well here…” Siya doubted looking around.

Just then, they all heard a sudden rustle of the leaves and turned their heads. And from the same direction, a sound of faint sobbing.

“Should we…” Urmila whispered to which they all slowly approached the sound. Despite having come out of war, they couldn’t help their protective instincts.

As they turned around, they were met with a frail woman sitting on her knees, wrinkled and dusty, tired eyes but solemn. And unmistakably the woman they were searching for.

“Trijana ji!”

SIya and Urmila lunged onto her hands and clasped them tightly as all three women shared light waves of both joy and hitting sorrow.

“Thank god, thank god we found you here..” Siya said.

“We thought you were..” Urmila couldnt finish her sentence.

Trijana wiped her years as she braved a smile.

“The day I was taken away, I was kept with a few others here, away from anyones sight, under this tree. For 4 days, I had nothing to eat. Then, I heard sounds of blaring gunshots and fires. Those who kept us tied ran themselves.. One poor man amongst them, cut all our ropes and asked us to flee, but when he was running away himself, someone from Raghvans army itself shot him, thinking him to be an enemy. I feared, if Id go out, I wouldn’t ever be Able to see you again… So I’ve been here since. Waiting for everything to be over. And it was only yesterday that I came to know, that the war was over. But honestly.. I dint feel like coming out anymore. I felt broken and tired, and I now want to spend my last days here itself. “

“But.. you must come with us!” Siya said. “Were going back home.. we will take you to your village, you can stay with your family..”

“I dont think Id have anyone left now. Im too tired to sail across, mentally and physically. It is best if you go and leave me here. Dont worry, Ill be my best here, for as long as I live. Not very long I hope.”

Their eyes brimmed for her, but they knew her resolve.

“But.. there Is no one here..” Urmila spoke softly.

She moved slowly back into the makeshift hut, forbidding anybody from coming closer.

“Your love and prayers are enough for me..” She had said, before they all came out after paying their respects to the grit of the woman.

/FLASHBACK ENDS/

“Siya?”

Siya moved out of her flashback as she looked at Ram again.

“I just hope, she has a peaceful life, whatever is ahead of her.”

“I do too,” Ram said as he made her fall back on the creaky mattress, covering her with a thin blanket.

“Im right here, Siya. Next to you. Everything will be fine..now go back to sleep.”

Siya nodded as she clasped into Rams chest tightly.

“Everything will be fine,” she whispered.

————————

“Everything will be fine,” Shruti whispered as the car etched into the doorway on Bharats house. It has been a long drive, and it was early dawn, slight chirpings were the only sound that could be heard. The cars roaring engine seemed to disturb the silence and it died only as the other cars came and stopped behind it.

“Bharat.. he won’t be angry right?” Maanvi asked worried, her heart forcing its way out of her chest.

Shrutis heart wrenched at the sight of her sister. She has always been the most headstrong, the most professional and charming amongst the 4 of them. But maybe tats what led her to wear the mask that was coming away now.. one had made her appear free from worries from everyone else. She too had a heart, and a very deep one at that. She loved fiercely, and she wouldn’t let anything touch that.

Shatrughan turned around and looked at Shruti, then at her.

“He won’t be, Di, I assure you. After seeing you, he won’t. He may never say it, but I know how much he loves you.”

Maanvi fluttered a nod, just as they saw the lights in his house being turned on.

“He’s awake,” Shatrughan said. “Lets get down.”

They got down slowly and stood.

“Who is it!” Bharat almost yelled from the inside. “Please, do not disturb at this hour. I can’t attend to you now. Come later.”

Maanvi breath etched in her throat. All of them remained quiet, waiting for him to come out.

“WHO is it, tell me please!” He asked again, but Shatrughan ordered everyone to be quiet. There were no windows to the front side, so the only way he could see who had come was to come out.

Finally, they heard the sound of the doors unlocking.

“Who is it I ask…” He came out angry with the flashlight in one hand and stopped when the light fell on her face.

He gulped when he took in a moment to absorb everything. It had been a near 9 months since he’d seen any of them, after he had sent a strict order to Shatrughan from them coming here. He knew it was a dangerous place, and didn’t want any trouble for them.

It wasn’t visible in the darkness, but only he could see with the light on her face, at how a single tear Rolled down her cheek and onto the ground. His clasp on the flashlight tightened as he found himself heaving for breath.

He pulled his eyes way with great force to look at Shtarughan and Shruti who looked back at him in a similar shock. His eyes were sunken, his hair was white in the edges. His beard, unkempt, and his unique golden brown curls came till his cheek, ruffled.

“Bhai,” Shatrughan said softly, taking a few steps ahead, “Its time to go home. Only 10 days are left now, and we all should be home before they come back, shouldn’t we?”

Bharat put the flashlight down as the sun slowly began to rise and he could see them much clearly. He saw the convoy of cars and realised they’d come prepared to take him.

“We will all be together, yes,” he said calmly,” But not there. I will not step in the Suryavanshi house until and unless Ram Bhaiyya comes here and takes me. Until I can ask for forgiveness from him.”

“You can ask for that forgiveness from him at home too right? Dont you think he’ll be happier to see you there?” Shatrughan pleaded.

“He may be, but for this once, I will think about myself. I will not move from here lest he comes here. And I know he will.”

“Be realistic Bhai!” Shatrughan came ahead. “ I doubt he even knows where you are, that you are away from us.”

It felt like a pang to his heart, but Bharat had lost emotional sense, logic for that matter. He wanted forgiveness first.

“He will, I trust him. You all can go back. I will come with him.” Saying so, he took a few steps back looking down.

Shatrughan and Shruti looked at Maanvi, who had been quietly watching him all the while. Only she could do something.

“Shatrughan,” she said firmly wiping the unnoticed tear, which made Bharat stop and look at her. She looked right back at him as she asked,

“You said you’ve brought all our things right? Enough to suffice for 10 days?”

Shatrughan and Shruti gleamed and nodded as Bharat looked on Shocked. He had suspected something, although. He knew his family wouldn’t leave him alone.. they were unlike him.

“Then.. if we may Bharat..” The name sounded new to her again, now that she said it in front of him, “Stay in your house for this while?”

Bharat was dumbstruck.

“There are a lot of dangers.. I would say..”

“May we?” She asked again, her voice trembling.

Bharat sighed. He knew, his mind may say no, but in his heart was the most deep, resounding Yes.

“Okay,” he said as he led them in.

Shruti smiled as she followed him quietly, with Maanvi behind her as Shatrughan arranged for the things to be brought in.

—————

“Bhai..” Shatrughan gleamed as he hugged Bharat inside the house. He looked around during the embrace as he saw the broken walls and dusted furniture. He had always been the one who’d ensure that the rest of them stayed comfortably whenever they’d go on trips, and loved to decorate his office and room, being the artist that he was. But now..

Bharat hugged him back and fought back a tear.

“Its okay.. Im sorry I made you wait back here.. because of me.”

Shatrughan broke away.

“When you live with family, no place seems small.”

Bharat managed a smile. How he’d experienced that himself, if only he could spill his heart out.

“Im happy to see you Bhaiyya,” Shruti said softly.

Bharat smiled a placed his hand over her head.

“You too dear,” he replied.

Shatrughan glanced at Shruti, and she blinked understanding what he meant.

“Which room did you say we should go in, bhai? Its been a long journey, I really need some rest.”

“Sure,” Bharat nodded and led them to their room.

“I hope it’ll be okay, theres a washroom there.. I dont use it regularly so.. “Bharat said to them in one of the two rooms In the house.

“Dont worry, it’ll be perfect for us,” Shatrughan said genuinely. “You go and take rest too.”

Bharat nodded as he came out.

“I hope they bond before Bhaiyyas back,” Shatrughan whispered as he turned.

He silently led Maanvi into his room, the one with the balcony, which had been his only recluse.

Both of them stared at the bed, which Bharat had forgotten, was a single bed, and there was no way the two of them could fit into.

He sighed.

“Im.. Im sorry. I can’t do anything right.. “ He said.

Maanvi stood next to him, close enough to feel his skin against her arm but not as close as she wanted herself to be.

“Please, dont do this to yourself. Theres no point in blaming yourself when you have no option. Let that room be to them.. Ill sleep on the couch here.”

“No,” he immediately said. “You won’t. I will. Its not even a proper couch.. you’ll be uncomfortable. “

“You too Bharat,” she said. “And you’re taller than me, you won’t fit. Ill sleep there, I won’t have a problem.”

She walked towards it, when she felt a tug at her hand. It was brief, he left it as fast as he held her hand, but it was long enough to awaken her heart from where it was.

“I have a lot of forgiveness pending from you too Maanvi, perhaps more than what I have from Bhaiyya.. so please, dont make me feel more guilty.”

He sighed as she took a pillow and sat on the couch at the foot of the bed.

He looked down.

“Ive made the bed. Take rest Maanvi, you have to wait it out here for 10 more days. If you need anything , let me know. Please, dont think about this. Take rest.”
Maanvi put her head down, taking in his scent left on the pillows as a tear ran down onto the whites. She turned away hiding her face.

“If only you knew, I was never angry on you at all.”

“If only you knew, how much I wanted to hold your arms,” Bharat regretted as he turned the other way too, and dreamt with eyes wide open.

It was smart of them to bring 10 days of provisions with them. Bharat needs them around, no matter what he says. How will Trijana survive by herself? Wish she would have left with the others.
