CHAPTER 36
ALL THE NAMES & PLACES ARE FICTITIOUS (if any resemblance to persons & places is purely coincidental). Any MEDICAL PROCEDURES, MEDICAL TERMS, RELIGIOUS TERMS, Punjabi terms, architectural terms, IT terms & programs, hospital/office hierachy, wedding rituals, etc. are from my imagination hence THEY ARE NOT TRUE.
ALL THE PHOTOGRAPHS DOWNLOADED DO NOT BELONG TO ME BUT BELONG TO THE ORIGINAL UPLOADER. I HAVE JUST USED THEM AS THEY GO WITH MY STORY!
Geet went towards the informal living room to take the emergency call. She put phone on her ear and said, “Good morning Ma’am! Sorry to keep you waiting!”
“Anjali, I apologise for calling you the day after your wedding but its an emergency.”
“Please don’t apologise Ma’am. Kindly tell me how can I help?”
“Anjali, I have a 7 month pregnant girl but while examining her, I found an abnormal growth in the cervix region?”
“Ma’am, what do the CA test shows?”
“POSITIVE.” Then both spoke in medical terms in detail about the patient’s health history.
“I’ll be there in 30-45minutes Ma’am. Please get the OT prepared we may need to do C-section depending on the level invasive growth.”
“Anjali but........”
“I’m coming Ma’am then we will discuss.” Geet disconnected the phone and turned to find Maan standing looking serious. “Geet you get ready and I’ll drive you to the hospital.”
“Acha hai ki aap hospital aa rahe hain. Main aapko bulane hi aanewali thee. Its going to be serious surgeries, I don’t know to what extent patient’s heart will be able to bear the stress. Also I don’t know if the patient will pull through!” (I’m glad that you are coming with me to the hospital. I was coming to call you. Its going to be serious surgeries, I don’t know to what extent patient’s heart will be able to bear the stress. Also I don’t know if the patient will pull through!)
“Fine. You get ready. I’ll tell Dadimaa.”
Ten minutes later, Geet came dressed as she use to before her wedding. Only difference was that now her parting had sindoor, forehead had bindi, neck had mangalsutra and a single red broad glass bangle (kara) in each hand. “Geet aapke “suhaag chinh” (marital symbols) kahaan......” (Geet, your marital symbols are......) Savitri Devi objected.
“Dadimaa, humne “suhaag chinh” arthaat sindoor, bindi, mangalsutra aur kaanch ke kare pehne hain. Iss se zyaada pehante to hummein hospital mein uttarna padhta. Yeh baaki zevar hain aap please inhei apne sangrakshan mein rakh lijiye.” (Dadimaa, I’m wearing all my marital symbols. I have vermilion (sindoor) in my parting, bindi on my forehead, mangalsutra in my neck and a single red broad glass bangle (kara) in my each hand. If I wear anything more, I will have to remove them before surgery. Here is the remaining jewellery, please keep them in your care.)
“Magar beta aap ‘nayi naveli dulhan’.........” (But my dear child you are a newly wedded bride, how...........)
“Nahi Maa, aap bhool rahi hain. Maan aur Geet sabse pehle doctors hain.” (No mother, you are forgetting that Maan and Geet are doctors first.) Ranjit said.
By now Maan had also come dressed in business casuals, “Chalo Geet der ho rahi hai.” (Come Geet lets leave. Its getting late.)
“Dadimaa aur Baba, hummein aashirwaad dijiye ki hum do jeevan bachaane mein safal hone.” (Dadimaa and Baba, please bless me that I’m successful in saving two lives today.) Geet said touching Savitri Devi and Ranjit’s feet. Then she went to puja ghar, covered her head, closed her eyes and folded her hands in front of the Almighty.
Maan and Geet reached Dhanvantri Hospital not bothered who saw them together as it was an emergency. Geet went immediately to labour room where Dr. Vijayalakshmi was examining pregnant women at different stages of labour.

Geet went along with Dr. Vijayalakshmi to AER and examined the patient’s area of cancerous growth. When both the Gynaecologists came out of the patients cubicle. “Ma’am my suspicions were right. Ma’am I suggest you do Mrs. Chawla’s C-section while I study her reports. Mrs. Chawla is underweight and highly malnourished. Hence, I don’t know to what extent patient’s heart will be able to bear the stress. Therefore, I suggest we keep Dr. Khurana on the standby as well. He is already studying case files in his cabin.”
Location: Gharonda (Mishra Residence)
“So, my babydoll what do you think?”

“Bhai, if Geet didi comes to know she will get very angry with Annie.”

“Don’t worry Sahil bhai is there to protect you.”
“What about Maan bhai? If he gets angry then.......”
“He is not so intelligent and is not as loyal as Geet thinks! Today I’ll prove it as well.” Sahil said under his breath. But then said aloud to Annie again, “Don’t worry Sahil bhai is there to protect you.”
What Sahil had not realised that each relationship has its boundaries. Whether its parents, siblings, friends and families no one can/should cross bounaries when dealing with their married child/ sibling/ friend’s spouse. Even in marriage which is one of the closest relationship, husband and wife cannot enter each other’s private space! If the members involved in these relationships don’t respect the boundaries, the relationship will collapse which is very difficult to mend.
Location: AER of Dhanvantri Hospital
Dr. Vijayalakshmi and Geet came to the AER where patient, Mrs. Tanya Chawla’s was present. Tanya was there with her husband looking scared and worried. On getting a nod, from Dr. Vijayalakshmi Geet started explaining, “Mrs. Chawla as you are underweight and extremely malnourished we will have to do your C-section and remove the baby as your body cannot carry your pregnancy full term. Therefore its best for your health as well as your baby’s health if we do C-section.”
Looking at Dr. Vijayalakshmi, Tanya said with tears, “Doctor, I’ll put on weight please don’t do a C-section.”
“I’m afraid Tanya, both you and Rahul were always so bothered about “your weight” and even wanted to look “size zero” when you were pregnant that you have ruined your health! The generation now-a-days has become so obsessed with looks, that they do all the newest diet fads and become anorexic ruining their health forever. But we cannot let an innocent child suffer for its immature and selfish parents!” An angry Dr. Vijayalakshmi said. Looking at the nurse standing next to her Dr. Vijayalakshmi ordered, “Summon a nurse from OT and prepare Mrs. Tanya Chawla for surgery.”
Meanwhile, Geet took Mr. Rahul Chawla outside from AER cubicle and asked him, “Mr. Chawla do you have any family member with you?”
“Yes my mother is here.”
“Please call her. I need to talk to both of you.” Rahul left to call his mother. Geet was looking at the files when Maan started walking towards her but before he could reach her Rahul came back with his mother. Looking at the middle aged woman it looked as if she is sensible especially when she asked, “Doctor, Tanya kaise hai?” (Doctor, how is Tanya?) Instead of “Baccha kaisa hai?” (How is the baby?)
“Auntiji, aapki bahu bilkul bhi theek nahi hai uski do surgeries honewali hai.” (Your daughter-in-law is not at all well. She needs two surgeries.)
“DO SURGERIES?” (Two surgeries?) Shocking senior Mrs. Chawla and Rahul.
“Haan. Mrs. Tanya Chawla ke “cervix mein cancer” hai.” (Yes. Mrs. Tanya Chawla has “cervical cancer”.)
“CANCER?” Mother and son gasped. Senior Mrs. Chawla started swaying with shock but Rahul supported her.
“Haan. Aur cancer ke liye hum operation tab tak nahi kar sakte jab tak foetus yaani baccha Maa ke garbh (womb) mein hai. Iss liye Mr. Chawla aap please yeh forms sign kijiye jiss se Vijayalakshmi Ma’am C-section shuru kar sakein. Aur uske baad hum koshish karenge ki zyaada se zyaada cancerous cells hatta sakein.” (Yes. We can’t operate her for cancer until the foetus or the baby is in her womb. Hence, Mr. Chawla kindly sign these forms required for surgery so Vijayalakshmi Ma’am can start the C-section. After that I’ll try and remove as many cancerous cells as possible.)
“Magar uska shareer do-do operation jhel nahi sakta.” (But her body cannot withstand two surgeries.) Senior Mrs. Chawla said practically
“Hum jaante hain magar humare paas koi aur chaara nahi hai.” (I know but we have no other alternative.) Seeing Maan near her she introduced, “Yeh hain Dr. Maan Singh Khurana, ek mashoor Cardiologist aur iss haspataal ke maalik. Aaj yeh bhi humare saath surgery mein honge.” (This is Dr. Maan Singh Khurana, a renowed Cardiologist who is also the owner of this hospital. He will be with us in surgery.)

“What will be the success rate of surgery?” Rahul asked.
“I’m sorry I can’t say right now, Mr. Chawla. I will only be sure once I go in.”
