for me its opposite I haven't seen anyone without mangalsutra.. of course it matters I haven't traveled to North India for over 2 yrs & haven't lived in North for say around 10 yrs.. Some wear simple chain but with mangalsutra over here.. may not be gold too.. may be covering or some stupid thing. I'm not a girl & not much into fashion either.. so can't answer more precisely 😛

Sindoor is quite rare to find over here in South.. they only put tika on head tht's it.. even if they apply sindoor.. it goes away when they keep combing their hair or when they wash their face.
