Interestingly, when you pass through the Chinese countryside in a bullet train, once you cross the city you find similar situation of ramshackle huts as in Indian countryside (that is, in the early 2000's) and the 2nd-3rd tier towns were similar to Indian 2nd-3rd tier towns. There was a distinctive difference between the main cities and the interiors of China. I have not been to interiors recently so I don't know if things have improved in the interiors.
